On 1 February 1956 I attended the funeral of the late JOSEPH MONO at the Dutch Reformed Church in the township of Munsieville. I arrived at the funeral at the church at approximately 12h45 and was present inside the church until approximately 14h30 when we all left the church to go to the cemetery for the " ' B u r l c T r T h e burial ceremony was due to have taken place at 14h00 but as there was a celav in the proceedings, we only went later. There was a shortage of transport to go to the graveyard and many young people were left behind in the churchyard. We were instructed to form two lines so that we might go directly to the house of the deceased for the traditional handwashing ceremony. I noted that SISTER BERNARD stood on the - - i K steos of the church ana accressed tne crowa IV

I noticed that two groups of people had left the churchyard and before I left the churchyard the police who had been present in the area opposite the churchyard fired teargas cannisters into the crowd. The moment the teargas was fired, I jumped over the fence and I ran to one of the houses nearbv so that I micht escape f r cm the oclice. As the gate of the house was locked I could not get in and as I ran back in the direction of the church I felt a teargas cannister hit me on the right hand side of my lower rib-cage. This was extremely painful and I fell to my knees and only quite a while later managed to stagger to another house, where the occupants gave me some milk for the effects of the teargas. I was later helped into a taxi which brought me home. The bruise from the teargas cannister was very hot and uncomfortable a n q ^ I O'-

While at the church, I saw SISTER CHRISTENS talking to policemen in a van near the church and I later saw her being put into the police van, whereupon the van left the area. :e? o n s n t HEREBY CERTIFY THAT THE DEPONENT HAS ACKNOWLEDGED HAT SHE KNOWS AND UNDERSTANDS THE CONTENTS Or THIS FFIDAVIT WHICH WAS SIGNED AND SWORN TO BEFORE ME AT ON THIS DAY OF FEBRUARY 153c THE SGULATIONS CONTAINED IN GOVERNMENT NOTICE NO. On the 1st February 1986 I attended the funeral of the late JOSEPH MONO at the Dutch Reformed Church in Munsieville. After the ceremony in the church & large crcup of people moved to the cemetery for the burial. I was travelling on the b ack of a large coal truck with many other people. At a pproximately 2.20 p.m. when the truck was approaching the cemetery two white policemen who were on foot approached the truck on either side of the cab and ordered the driver to stop. One of the policemen pointed at me and said to me "kom j y hier". I asked the policeman G j, r.cu ccns vr one As I was smoking a cigarette at the time and also wearing a bricht creen a n d vellow T-shirt I thouoht one or the cz'r.ez of these things may have

Once I stepped onto the ground the same policeman grabbed me by my shirt front and took me to an armoured vehicle and told me to lie face down on the floor of the vehicle. The same policeman then proceeded to walk over my back while I was lying face down. I was also hit on the beck cf the head with a n anc while he w was a "comrade". A large number cf sellers then joined in the assault on me and they were hitting me at r a n d o m and also walked ever my back while I was still on the fleer of the vehicle. I think there may have been five or six soldiers involved in this assault on me. Later a boy of between 17 and IS y e a r s of age was also placed in the vehicle and also assaulted by the policemen and the soldiers. I saw that he was hit with aoun and also a A kierie. He was also punched repeatedly in the f a c e.

On the 1st February 1S36 at approximately 2-15 pm. I was travelling in a taxi in Munsieville. When we reached the entrance of Munsieville two white policemen and two black o c 1 icemen stepped the taxi and told me to get out. The driver of the taxi/ whose name I co n o t know,.was not instructed to get out. Once I was outside the taxi I was told to get into a yellow Nissan police van by a white policeman speaking Afrikaans. I thereupon asked why I had to get into the van and instead of replying the same white ooliceman merely punched me in the face towards my left eye. I was then pushed into the van. I was alone in the back of the police van ^for s : ~ e time until a boy aged 17 or 18 years was later placed in the back with me.

11 Page 3 When the door of the van was opened I saw that the boy was standing outside with a black policeman. The boy was wearing a lumber jacket and the black policeman proceeded to undo the front of the jacket to expose a T-shirt with the slogan "Release Kandela". He cot into the van and the two white policemen who were present started punching us all over our bodies while we were still in the back of the van. We were instructed to lie face down in the van and net to.look outside. After some considerable period we were transferred to an open pick up truck and taken to the Krugersdorp police station. At the police station I saw SISTER CHRISTINE ana BERNARD who were also in custody. SISTER BERNARD asked me whether I had been assaulted and I confirmed that I had been punched by the p o l i c e m e n. I was in a group of 26 people whom the fpo- lice locked in a room and at approximately

On the 10th and 11th February 1986 I checked with the police at F.andfontein and Krugersdorp on the reason why the people, whose names are listed below, are being held in custody by the police. The reason why I did the above checking, was that they hac all been arrested quite seme time ago and were, according to information I had qathered, still being so detained. As will be seen from their affidavits, annexed hereto, the numbers of which annexures are listed below, the above persons have deposed to affidavits setting out the circumstances of their arrest. I run a fruit, vegetable and food store on the corner of Dalinvebo and Pilane Streets, Munsieville and I am normally present at the store. Since the consumer boycott of the white owned businesses in Krugersdorp started on the 8th December 1935 members of both the SADF and SAP have drive past my store and for nc apparent reason fired teargas cannisters into my" s' to'rel There appears to be no particular system as to the firing of the tearcas cannisters except that they are more often fired over weekends or whenever there is crowding around my store. This would often be the case after there had been a funeral in the township. The usual procedure for the firing of the cannisters seems to be that the vehicles would move slowly past my store and without stopping cannisters would be fired into my A store.

22 Page 3 The a b o v e m e n t i o n e d acts have happened so often during the past two months that I cannot recall the exact number. The most recent occasion was on the 1st February 1966 and I attribute this to the fact that there was a funeral held on tho l cay* I do not understand why the Defence Force and the police find it necessary to behave in this fashion as I believe this is a very peaceful township. I am employed by my mother, MRS ROSINA MOLEFE as a truck driver for the purposes of selling coal to the public. As we were busy working in this fashion, four armoured vehicles occupied by members of the Defence Force arrived and stopped close by. 10 Two members of the Defence Force alighted from the one vehicle and asked me as to where I had obtained the petrol. I replied that, as they could see, I was refilling my truck with the oetrol. 11 :ne meantime two oj four vehicles had departed anc seen thereafter returnee again. 12 The same soldier who had spoken to me earlier pointed a rifle at me and told me to remove the hose frcm the tank of the truck anc to drink the cetrol left in the 25 litre can. 13 Since I was afraid that I would be injured I had not chc ice out to start sipping the petrol. I know of no apparent reason why I should have been treated in this fashion. In particular I can state that I did not intend to use the petrol for any subversive purpose. I am not sure what the exact time was when I heard a knock at the front door of my house. I enquired as to who was there, and heard a reply by someone saying that it was THEBE. Since I know a person by the name of THEBE rather well, I did not hesitate to get out of bed and open the cocr. As I opened the door, I saw that the person whose voice I had heard, was in fact THEBE, but that he was accompanied by a number of soldiers. It was not clear to me at the time what the purpose of their visit was. A number of these soldiers came into the house, some entering a lodger's room to the right hand side of the passage, whereas others remained inside the passage. As I went back into the bedroom where I had been

30 Page 3 sleeping, I saw that I was followed by one of the soldiers. While I stood close to the door which was slightly ajar at this stage, the soldier who had entered the room came up to me and proceeded to feel various parts of my body. It was not at all clear to me why he did this to me. At the time I was dressed in a long nightdress only. The soldier also fonaled my b r e a s t s,_without saying anything. I was shocked by his behaviour and I all I could think of saying to him was whether he could net see that I was an old lady, whereupon he turned around and saw my granddaughter, MANDY MHLANGA, at the time sleeping in the other bed in the same room. He then left me, approached my granddaughter and started to feel her body in a manner similar to the way he had felt mine. &

31 Page 4 My granddaughter soon woke up surprised, jumped out of bed and crawled underneath the table in the centre of the room to my bed on the other side of the room. At this stage I was still standing close to the door. As my granddaughter crawled towards the bed she was most upset, screamed and voiced her shock at the behaviour of the soldier. Apparently as the result of my granddaughter's screams, left. the soldier turned about and At the time of my deposing to this affidavit, my granddaughter is not living with me in the house anymore. She is in Kagiso, but due to the urgency of the matter I might not be able to locate her in time in order to obtain an affidavit from her.
