1 Peterson tapped to fill Board term The Board of Education chose Vicki Peterson for anor two-year term on board following review of four applicants that applied for open seat. At last month s Board meeting, member Steve Mosel announced his resignation from Board of Education, vacating a term with twoyears left. The Board outlined a procedure for selecting a new member, similar to what was done in 2008 when Dan Stelling moved out of District. Additionally similar was choice of candidate Vicki Peterson was also chosen during 2008 selection process. The Board accepted applications until Monday, Jan. 23, and received four such notifications from registered voters inside school district Bob Lingenfelter, Paula Hoffman, Gary Shada and Vicki Peterson. Following less than 15 minutes of review, Board n ranked candidates using a 1-to-4 numbering system with most preference of candidate tallying lowest possible score. There was no discussion about any candidate, except a small announcement about who Gary Shada was a Pierce teacher who had recently moved into district. No or discussion was offered by Board members, and after tallies were taken, Mike Sauser and Jason Ashburn added scores declaring Peterson chosen candidate with seven points. The or candidate totals were 13, 13 and 15. Tallies were not disclosed for individual candidates, Superintendent Dr. Darron Arlt collected tally sheets, applications and results and y were not made available for review. Arlt said he believed applications were addressed to Board and refore not public record, and tally sheets though such results were disclosed, by board member, in 2008 were not given out for or candidates. The vote was unanimous to install Peterson to her third term of service partial term for Dan Stelling, her full four-years from 2012 election, and now for anor two years. 2 2 Babbling Brook Off Season For those of us in small communities, re is no such thing as an off season. My wife and I have been discussing past few months need for our children to be as involved as we are. Should y be so busy? Growing up in same community, we certainly had some different experiences while aging in and area. I was involved in everything I could be, mainly because I got bored a lot, but also because I really enjoyed doing all things I could. There were a few non-mainstream things though, that I participated in, and at times, those things were even more fun than regular activities. Boy Scouts was a great time, with not nearly as much pressure as a sports practice or an academic contest. Well, let s not kid ourselves, only academic contest I was in was typing test - and even n I disqualified myself, (though I was words per minute faster than next closest person), because I didn t like rules organizers had come up with. I always thought Quiz Bowl competitions were just incredible feats of strength. I wasn t ever chosen for those, I presume mainly because of my inability to play by rules set up by ors. Much along same lines, I distinctly remember a few differences of opinion I had along way. When in elementary school, I distinctly remember going to Physical Education class in weight room one day. Boys were separated to go practice wrestling, and girls were asked to do tumbling on or end of room. I recall questioning instructor (name withheld to protect ir identity) if I could participate in tumbling. I wasn t denied access, it wasn t that bad, but prodding of my classmates did cast my inclination back toward wrestling practice instead. There were times, many years later, that I asked actual purpose of having to do such things as geometry, algebra and any variation of trigonometry. I wasn t ever too impressed with eir. One might think, in today s post-modern society that a decision like that meant I was drawn back to writing or something - and that wasn t always case. I equally didn t appreciate journaling at time, but I see it s value now, just as much as I see value in mamatics I was exposed to. Today s world is much more to my liking at times, mainly for complete and total submersion and exposure to nearly all types of education you d like to see through internet. It was around when I was a kid, but when I first started surfing re were literally enough websites that could be listed on one piece of paper. I forsee a time in very near future where people will even need time to take some off season from not only ir typical run of mill jobtype things, but because of way we consume everything else, from pro football to world series poker - speed at which we can decide to forgo everything else and focus solely on ourselves and our own entertainment is really scary. Why aren t people coming to weekend events? Netflix binging. Why aren t people coming to local games? Youtube. Missing people at things you like to go to? Satellite television. These are all, of course, gross exaggerations of my own whims and thoughts, but I can t be alone, can I? I would much rar sit in my warm home in safety of my own livingroom, without getting dressed or showering or really boring what anyone else thinks of me, than visit someone to play cards, talk or even leave my phone behind. I m a really selfish person when it comes right down to it, but I do have my limits. I believe re s a single, solitary truth out re - by its own definition, and that it s important to seek that truth - endowed upon us by our Creator. There aren t multiple truths. One cannot be a President and not a President at same time. One cannot have visited moon and not have visited moon at same time. The power of instantaneous, consumable information is that it is instant and consumable - two things our human minds are not prepared for, and will likely never reconcile. The best part about not truth is how quickly truth is exposed. Seven bills introduced to session from local District By: Tom Briese State Senator, District 41 The first 10 days of legislative session is only time when new bills can be introduced in Nebraska Legislature. During this time, I introduced seven bills, but two of m will probably be of greatest interest to people of 41st District, and will probably create most controversy, as well. They are LB 312 and LB 313. These two bills toger work to provide real property tax relief to hard-working Nebraskans, in conjunction with proposals by or senators this year. I want people of 41st district to understand that LB 313 and LB 312 represent months of hard work by many people to ensure that property taxpayers all over Nebraska on our farms, in our cities, and in our rural communities receive property tax relief y deserve. Both bills will create a new fund for property tax relief which will distribute property tax credit refunds back on a dollar-for-dollar basis to all property taxpayers. LB 312 does this by removing decades worth of exemptions carved into Nebraska sales taxes by special interests, and LB 313 does this by moving sales tax rate up by one percent. Both bills n direct all new additional money raised from sales taxes first to raise state earned income tax credit, reby paying back least fortunate among us who spend greatest proportion of ir money on purchased items, and n directing entire remainder of money to property tax credits. In addition to those two bills, I have introduced a bill to ensure that parents with disabilities are not discriminated against in custody and adoption decisions; a bill to allow our local communities to enact vacant property registration ordinances; a bill to keep Nebraska s roads in compliance with federal highway regulations; and a bill to help protect physical security and cyber security for our energy infrastructure. If you d like to find out more about se or any bills, simply go to and click on search bills. As always, you can reach my office at (402) I look forward to hearing from you! Opinion Making Headway for By: Michael Holton City Administrator There are many times that I know that when I write a column that it may strike a nerve and people can get upset. I have even had city council ask why I would write articles to provoke people or to challenge certain groups. My answer back is why write an article if I don t stir up people to react or to act on what is best for? If all article is supposed to do is become a yes person to what is daily routine for, nothing will ever get better for many who want more from ir community. We all have a vision of what we want for community and sometimes y don t always align mselves as neatly as many of us believe y should. If you have children in school, re is a tendency to believe that community should rally around school-centered activities or things that matter to m. There is nothing wrong with that notion No matter time of day or night, no matter wear, and no matter family time that gets interrupted, fire and EMS departments respond to you. They risk ir safety and health to help those in need around ir community without even batting an eye. Now, is your chance to help us. The Fire and Rescue Department needs your help! It is sad to say, but our number of volunteers is dwindling. The volunteers that we do have are amazing, but also aging. The physical demands of what we do, is something that not many can say y understand or have felt. With less people, and an aging demographic of those that do help, we are looking for a better way to serve our beloved community. That is where you come in. We are asking each and every one of you to help! Fire and Rescue is looking to purchase an automatic load ambulance stretcher. This might not sound like anything special to you, but to all of us that do lifting, loading and unloading it just might get us more excited than Christmas morning. These stretchers are able to do lifting that is required to load and unload patients, saving us and our health in process. These stretchers are able to evenly, and smoothly lift patient and move m forward automatically without lifting power many of us have endured over years. Rocky terrain, uneven slopes, even snow are no match for se stretchers, as once we push stretcher in place, rest, so to say, is history. don t always appeal to many people. Nobody likes to look at infrastructure and pay for it. It is necessary but not always most glamorous. The bottom line for city is that we need clean air, clean water, adequate sewer disposal, trash disposal, electric transmission, construction waste sites, economic development, libraries, parks and recreation, culture, commerce, child and elder care, protection and emergency services. If it doesn t fall into one of those categories, it doesn t necessarily get prioritized. What we need to do as a community at large is to integrate goals of all of organizations in community and symbiotically align m toger to make a better. That is why I write articles in manner that I do so that people understand delicate balance that must occur on a daily basis. Unfortunately, lifeblood of city does not always match importance that someone may make based upon ir affinity to what y love. All citizens in deserve a voice and I do not bow down to hierarchy that some people think of mselves within community. Everyone gets a fair chance until y do something to lose it. To simply say that someone in community gets more of a voice because who y are is unhealthy and it is also not fair to town as a whole. In terms of democracy, local government is best representation of principles which guide it. People do have a voice and it does matter. That is why I write articles that I do so that many opinions can be heard and not just those who bark loudest Computer Diagnostics Car and Truck Repair Tune-Ups Oil Changes Brakes Custom Exhaust Alignments Tire Balancing Tire Rotation Front End Alignment Overhauls Air Conditioning Snapper Lawnboy/Toro Jonsered Chain Saws Echo Trimmers (Dealer) Repair Shop We make and sharpen chains. Fire and Rescue has always felt love and support of our amazing community without negativity that so many or communities have dealt with. And for this, we are truly thankful to you all. This being said, we are asking for your help with making our dream of an automatic loading stretcher for our community a reality. We are asking for donations to Fire and Rescue towards this stretcher. You might think that we hold different fundraisers throughout year for this sort of equipment. Yes and No. Our or fundraisers, like our annual soup feed, Fireman s Dance, and our pancake feed are used to purchase or supplies and equipment that we use and need. We are able to update fire and EMS supplies, along with smaller equipment purchases from se donations too, and we could not say thank you enough. We know that times are tough, but we also want to make sure that we are best prepared to take care of each of you in your time of need. Donations can be mailed to Fire and Rescue station, or dropped off to any Fire or EMS member of department. Words cannot express our gratitude and love toward you, and we hope that, with your help, we can all pitch in and purchase something that will truly benefit every patient in ir time of need. Business leaders often only see a capitalistic and material view of community development as it matters to ir bottom-line. I can also see reasoning in this strategy. If business people cannot meet bottom line y won t be in business very long. Ors see a strong push to preserve church community and that will save town. There is some logic in this statement and churches have always been civic minded and understanding. There are several cultural aspects that make up what community development is all about and we haven t even scratched surface to many of m. There are health community advocates, elder care advocates, gender role advocates, etc. This is also why we have a women s club, book clubs, community clubs, arts groups, age-oriented clubs, cultural clubs or organizations in. They all fill a niche to someone and importance that it has for m. The city, as a municipal organization, is much like that. Through voluntary CRP Grasslands program, grasslands threatened by development or conversion to row crops are maintained as livestock grazing areas, while providing important conservation benefits. Approximately 200,000 of accepted acres were offered by small-scale livestock operations. Producers of all sizes are interested in USDA s Conservation Reserve Program, said Dolcini. This latest round of CRP Grasslands enrollment, where much of acreage comes from small-scale livestock operations, shows that our nation s family farmers and ranchers can have a big impact on environmental conservation. 9 Classifieds 9 Stemless Daisy Q: I have inherited a sugar shaker that has been identified as a piece of Stemless Daisy. What can you tell me about it? Betty, Portsmouth, Virginia A: Stemless Daisy sometimes known as Cosmos pottery is pattern glass that was produced from roughly 1895 until 1915 by Consolidated Lamp and Glass Company. Almost all of pieces I have seen are made of milk glass, but re are exceptions. The relief-molded flowers are generally on a finely crosscut background and painted in soft colors, including blue, pink and yellow. Your sugar shaker is considered rare, and depending on its condition could be worth as much as $650. *** Q: In 1937, I received a composition and stuffed cloth doll of Mickey Mouse. It is marked knickerbocker and is about 12 tall and in excellent condition. A neighbor has offered me $250 for it, but I wanted to check with you first. Arthur, Austin, TX A: I found your doll referenced in Official Hake s Price Guide to Character Toys by Ted Hake and published by House of Collectibles. According to Hake, if your doll is truly in excellent condition it could be worth as much as $1,200. *** Q: I have seven Daguerreotype pictures. They are in fairly good condition, but no cases. What would be average price if I want to sell m? Mildred, Laurel, Indiana A: It really depends on images. Most of Daguerreotypes I have seen in antique shops have been priced in $30 to $50 range. If any of your pictures show children with toys, men in Civil War-era uniforms, or or than studio poses, y could be worth much more. *** Q: I have a set of Heston National Finals Rodeo belt buckles issued in 1975 and The buckles are mint and have never been worn. How much are y worth? Wade, Orton, Minnesota A: I contacted a rodeo memorabilia collector who thought your buckles would be valued in $15 to $25 range. This was confirmed when I checked ebay and found dozens of Heston rodeo buckles, mostly offered for $15 and $20 each. 10 10 The Back Page Bowlers heat up lanes Logan Campbell and Klay Cash (left and second from left) at Conference tournament. Submitted Article On Saturday, January 14th, D&K Lanes hosted six teams in conference action getting ready for districts and state. On boy s side Humphrey St. Francis/Humphrey dominated conference winning for third year in a row. The top four individual bowlers were selected for all-conference honors and Klay Cash and Lane Campbell finished as all-conference bowlers for boys, third and fourth respectively. In girls action, bowlers dominated from start and won convincingly over Newman Grove, Humphrey and ClarksonLeigh. Brittani Pospisil and Devan Solomon led way in all-conference honors finishing first and third, respectively. On Saturday, January 21st, bowlers traveled to York on Sunset Lanes to take on bowlers from sourn conference in a double header. The first opponent for bowlers was Ravenna. In boys action, Ravenna beat boys lost Ravenna got off to a fast start but did manage to win baker s games in team action rolling a 193 and 171. I thought boys rolled well but y just have not been able to pick up timely spares when needed most, said Coach Michael Holton. Kenny Hart bowled in good form rolling a 159 and a 165 and clearly looks like he is starting to peak. On girls side of things, wasted little time with Ravenna and easily controlled entire match winning 18 to 1. The girls are start- ing to come toger and peak at right time to get ready for state, said Holton. Brittani Posipisil rolled a 235 and Jadin Doerr followed up with a 159 to start girls off. In second game, Pospisil rolled a 195 to finish off her two game series with a 430. Kailee Rafert rolled a 149 to help in second game. Holton added, These girls are bowling at such a high level right now that I just want m to find ir potential at state and keep it up. I had to sit Devan Solomon as she had been suffering with flu but as a team, y just pick up where y need to help each or. Taelyr Beery also bowled with girls rolling a 139 in second game to help with win. In second match against McCool Junction, came to bowl and took victories from both teams. McCool Junction is only about eight miles from York so this was team s home lanes. In girls action, wasted little time to take down McCool Junction 18.5 to.5. Our girls took control in every individual game and baker s games as well, said Holton. Brittani Pospisil led way rolling a 183 and a 204. Holton added, I let Devan Solomon bowl in second match as she had been cleared by doctors but I did not want to wear her out. She bowled a 191 and a 159 to help team and it was good to have her back in lineup. The boys match with McCool Junction became one for record books as both teams bowled on an extremely high level. In first game if individual scores, McCool Junction handed a whipping as y took early lead, 6-1. The only point was scored by Lane Campbell with a 159 to McCool bowler s 130. Klay Cash rolled a solid 181 just get beat by his opponent with a 182. In second game, won 6-1 to tie score at 7-7. Leading way for Pirates were Kenny Hart with 231 and Logan Campbell with a 190. Something finally clicked for boys in second game and y came to bowl. Kenny s 231 was well earned and no one deserves it more than he, said Holton. I have been waiting all season for boys to get confidence in mselves to seal wins and y were able to go into baker s games with that confidence. In baker s action, McCool won first game and won second game to go into final game tied. McCool Junction started off red hot as y rolled four strikes in a row to take an early commanding lead. fought back and rolled three strikes in a row in 5th, 6th and 7th frames to bring Pirates closer. After nine frames, led by four pins. McCool Junction stepped up in 10th frame to roll a strike to set tone and appeared to have control. Anchor Lane Campbell calmly stepped up in 10th frame to roll a strike and a spare to seal win for boys in an epic game I will remember that game for a long time as boys showed that y would not quit, said Holton. Ors bowling for boys were Jaden Wingert & Zack Sims. Districts for bowlers will be held in Columbus at Westbrook Lanes on Saturday, January 28th starting at 10 a.m. Those participating in 9-10 tournament on Jan. 14 and winning first-place honors included, front row (l to r): Coach Tom Sauser, Jacob Hoffmann, John Schlote, AdeDamola Akinningbagbe and Matt Hoffmann; and second row: Colton Beed, Jacob Lingenfelter, Tibor Terifaj, Brendan Rasmsussen and Austin Choat. Pirates take tournament championship The Pirate freshman/sophomore boys basketball team took championship honors at annual 9-10 tournament on Saturday, Jan. 14 in. The Pirates defeated West Holt s Huskies and Pierce s Blue Jays to take first-place finish in a tournament that Coach Tom Sauser said has not won since In team s first game against West Holt, Pirates outscored Huskies in first quarter, 10-4, and continued lead into halftime, 159. The Huskies responded in third quarter, outscoring Pirates by one, but still trailing The fourth quarter had both teams scoring in double digits, but Pirates were able to maintain ir lead by seven, winning game John Schlote put 13 points on scoreboard for Pirates to lead offense. Jacob Lingenfelter had 10 points; Matt Hoffmann, Austin Choat and Brendan Rasmussen each had four points and AdeDamola Akinningbagbe, Tibor Terifaj and Jacob Hoffmann each had two points. The team s second game was also a win, this time over Pierce Blue Jays. The Pirates outscored ir rivals 21-8 in first half, and kept lead, in second half to take win by 17 at over Blue Jays. John Schlote and Austin Choat both had 10 points to lead team s scoring. Matt Hoffmann had seven points, Jacob Lingenfelter had five points, Brendan Rasmussen had three and Tibor Terifaj had two points. Family Game Night at Library...
