Zion, GA Encouraging Community Involvement POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS Shop With a Cop 2018 SHOP WITH a COP 2018 We know of a few kids who had some of their wishes come true this Christmas. On December 3, the Mt. Zion Shop With a Cop took place at Walmart in Bremen, GA. This year s shopping trip was sponsored solely by Michael Hurston on behalf of Hurston Welding and Fabrication. It appears a good time was had by all. Pictured left are Chief Brian Sims (far right) and Deputy Chief Rick Wheeler (far left) with the kids and their parents before leaving for the trip. The City of Mt. Zion extends their deepest appreciation to Michael Hurston for making this day possible. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED ITEMS AND HELPED WITH PACKING AND MAILING FOR OUR CHARITY THIS YEAR FROM CITY HALL. THE SOLDIERS SHOEBOX WAS OUR CHARITY FOR THANKS TO ALL OF YOU, WE HAD SEVERAL LARGE BOXES OF ITEMS TO SEND TO OUR MILITARY PERSON- NEL. THE MOUNT ZION COMMUNITY IS SO GENEROUS AND THAT S ONE OF THE REA- SONS IT IS SUCH A FANTASTIC PLACE TO LIVE AND RAISE YOUR FAMILY! CITY PROPERTY TAXES City taxes are due January 15, If you have an escrow account, please do not send payment; let the mortgage company pay the tax bill. Do send your mortgage company the bill. Please do not round up your tax payment; this leaves a small credit that we have to carry over to the next year. Please pay by the due date to avoid interest and penalties being added to your total. Thank you. RECREATION DEPARTMENT NEWS I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and is looking forward to the New Year. There is not a lot going on in the Recreation Department in December. The basketball teams have been practicing hard on the court preparing for the upcoming season beginning January 4 th. If your child would like to play baseball or softball this spring you can go ahead and register at City Hall Monday thru Friday from 8:00-4:30, or at any home basketball game at the concession stand in the gym. Cost is $40 for ages Please don t wait until the last minute to register. The sooner everyone signs up the quicker we can start. 2 Page 2 Mount Zion Bulletin January 2019 GREETINGS FROM CITY HALL I hope everyone had a great Christmas holds the promise of being a very busy and productive year for our city. I am looking forward to the New Year with all its challenges and hard work. The City has completed its codification of all our city ordinances and is ready for your review and use. To pull it up on your computer, simply type in GA Municode. This will bring up all the cities in Georgia that have their ordinances on line; scroll down to Mount Zion and you are there. Having spent the past year working with the Florida company that assisted us with the codification, it became apparent that there are several areas where the City does not have the protection it needs from some of our ordinances. One of these areas was in subdivision development. Our current ordinances that govern a developer would place the taxpayers of the city in the positlon of having to pick up some of the cost of this construction, along with shoddy workmanship and future maintenance cost. Granted, this is not a problem today, but it will be in the near future. I will present to the January meeting of the City Council, a resolution for the City to deny any future request for subdivision permits until a new ordinance has been adopted. I have recommended to the Council that we take the current subdivision ordinance of Carroll County and modify it to become the Mount Zion ordinance. A draft of the county ordinances with all the necessary changes is being reviewed by our City Attorney for his recommendations prior to City Council consideration. Our water project could not be going any better. The contractor has reached the intersection of Bowdon Junction Rd and Georgia 16. January will see them laying pipe east on Georgia 16 towards Carrollton. I sincerely want to thank everyone for their support and patience with this huge city undertaking will not only see the completion of phase 1; but the granting of state funds to begin phase 2 this year. Hopefully 2019 will see funding acquired by the City to begin development of our store at the intersection of Georgia 16 and Burwell Mt. Zion Rd. A concept design has been completed by our architect and will be evaluated by the Development Authority. All my efforts now are directed towards finding "money". Hopefully the County will release some SPLOST funds designated for economic development. Probably not, but keep your fingers crossed. There are also several programs available on the state level that we could possibly qualify for. I could fill the entire paper with comments concerning the brick walls that we have encountered to date with our funding inquiries. Mayor Randy Sims Sara Dorsey has a worn out dishwasher! By: Jack Dorsey My wife, Sara, has a dishwasher that she purchased brand new in December of The dishwasher could do anything back then, wash any dish, pot, pan, glass, cup, silverware, etc. In the last few years she has had to put it in the shop several times for some minor and major repairs. Several years ago the dishwasher was in the repair shop in Bremen and has also been in the repair shop in Carrollton all for minor repairs. About 10 years ago the main pump had to have an additional timer to make it work properly and again had to go to the repair shop for even more repairs. It is my hope that her dishwasher lasts as long as my wife needs it. The only machine other than her dishwasher that she has purchased was in 1962, an Amana Freezer, that is also still operating after 56 years.
