The band played together from 1948 to 1977! They did weddings, receptions, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. He fondly remembers it as the Halupki Circuit. The Royal Bells also made an appearance in association with the Ted Mack Show in Did you know, Jerry Smith played the saxophone for the Rhythm Katz? The band played together for 35 years! They provided music for receptions, proms, anniversaries, and birthdays! Did you know, Gary Van Driesen s granddaughter, Alexis Patterson, is participating in the Miss Teen NY pageant? Alexis is a junior at Union Endicott School. She is a community activist and Honor Student. There was a wonderful article written about Alexis in the Press and Sun Bulletin. You can access it at pressconnects.com. This article touched Senator Libous so much he contacted Alexis and stated he would sponsor her for the Miss Teen NY pageant. The pageant requires a community service component. Alexis has also been helping us at Friday night dinners. We wish her success in her endeavors. Did you know, Carin Palmer s son and Rich Palmer s nephew, Bryon is being recognized for his exceptional football skills? Carin states Bryon and his Johnson City High School team have been very blessed this year! They are undefeated! Bryon has been featured several times in the Press and Sun Bulletin. He has been interviewed on TV. It is evident the Johnson City football team plays team ball. They are very supportive of each other. Carin says they are all great kids. Rich also informed me football isn t Bryon s only accomplishment! Apparently, he is also an exceptional Lacrosse player. Carin and Rich your lodge family will be rooting for Bryon and the JC Wildcats as they continue their championship season! Did you know, Holly and Bob s son Michael plays golf for ESF? Michael was an exceptional high school golfer and is now enjoying playing for his new school. He often plays with the Syracuse University Golf team! Did you know, Bob Belveg turned 50? Holly treated him to a celebration in Las Vegas! Did you know, Bill Maney somehow wound up in Vegas with Holly and Bob? Did you know, Dolene Riley s, grandson, James Chanty is the quarterback for SV? James is a junior and all of us at Casino Night celebrated the news he had a touchdown pass against Newark Valley last Saturday! James started in pee-wee and worked his way up! Dolene is also celebrating the wonderful news that her granddaughter, Mikala King, has signed a commitment letter to play softball at Binghamton University! Mikala also is an accomplished basketball player!

5 5 5 Rubber Ducky Derby Recap! The members and guests enjoyed Clam Night with the Rowdy Rubber Ducky Derby as entertainment! This was our first annual Rubber Ducky Derby! Due to our busy lodge schedule, we had rescheduled from September to a colder October.. This meant no outdoor pond. So how do you do a ducky derby inside with no water? We found a way! Proud Rubber Ducky owners included Jerry Smith along with his family and guests, Herbie and Christine Flint and their guests, Elinor and David, Ken Jennison, Deb V., Sharon and Steve Flint, Gerri Jurkiw, and Bill and Alicia Proceeds from event went to our Christmas Charities. Thanks to all participants who really quacked us up! Congratulations to Carol, Jerry s guest, on out swimming all the other duckies! Look for next year s event, you to could be driven quackers! Submitted by Alicia, Bill and Gerri Casino Night Recap! Many thanks to Ed and Gayle Lovell who planned and executed a fun, profitable Casino Night! They added to this year s excitement by bringing in a Big Wheel. It was so great to hear the clack, clack, clack of the spinning wheel! Black Jack, Showdown and Hold em keep guests entertained. Tioga Downs provided some very interesting raffle items, Thanks Gerri for getting these items for us! Gayle and Alicia provided a delicious buffet (loved Gayle s camp Chili!) Our gamers included: David, Doug and Adam Gardner, Deb V., Bruce, Audrey, Dale and Rosemarie Stevens, Herbie, Sharon and Steve Flint, Russ Ryan, Debbie and Craig Maye, Dick Baziewick, Gary VanDriesen, Dolene, Nancy and Barry Graver, Gerri Jurkiw, and of course, Bill and Alicia. Special thanks to our brother from Homer Lodge, Trent. Each year this event grows. Mark this on your calendar for next year. This great group raised $200! Start saving those quarters for next year, (yep games just a quarter or two). And remember, what happens in Viva JC Lodge, stays in Viva JC Lodge Submitted by Alicia Recap of Second Annual Christmas for Kids Auction! We thought last year s auction was entertaining! This year s was truly amazing! Many thanks to Doug, Joan, Elinor and David Gardner for their dedication and efforts. Each year they strive to ensure our Christmas events are well funded! The proceeds for this year s auction were an astounding $1,182. The auction could not have succeeded without the donations of items: Elinor and David, Joan and Doug; Audrey Lopresti; John and Kathy Tokos, Paula Hoover; Mario C.,Steve and Sharon Flint; Gayle and Ed Lovell; Lori and Ben Cabot; Marty and Pat DeVault; Bill and Alicia Beck; Grandma Fitzgerald, Deb and Mark Prindle; Joan and Doug Gardner and Gerri Jurkiw. Thank you for bringing in items to be auctioned! Kudos to our generous bidders who made this a success: Marty and Pat DeVault; Mark and Deb Prindle; Lori and Ben Cabot; Ken Jenninson; Keenan (Elinor s grandson) Paula Hoover and daughters; John and Kathy Tokos; Audrey Lopresti; Deb V. Graig and Debbie Maye; Holly and Bob Belveg, Adam Gardner, Mario and friends, Christine and Herbie Flint, Joan and Doug Gardner. Sharon and Steve Flint. Those in attendance will never forget Doug s and David s willingness to do anything for a dollar! We were treated to a spectacle of Doug and David strutting with purses which were promptly stuffed with $1/s, $10 s, etc! Then of course this was followed by stuffing Doug s cowboy boots with dollars! Then there was Steve who took up the cause by modeling Children s aprons. Now we all know an adult apron is a stretch for Steve, however, everyone was willing to throw in dollars to see Steve modeling these itsy bitsy aprons! We have some of the most generous members. They put into practice our motto. JC Elks Care, JC Elks Share! I have no idea how they are going to top this next year! Be sure you don t miss it! Submitted by Alicia To all, I want to thank Dennis for the great work he did on the sign. All I had to do was ask. Also, thanks goes out to Russ Ryan for the help he gave. Thanks Dennis! -Steve

6 6 6 Johnson City Lodge Does It Again! Dan Hoover, one of our lodge members, had a large Stage III cancerous brain tumor removed and now faces a long recovery period consisting of chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and lots of physical therapy to try to beat this disease. With the economy, normal living expenses, loss of work, and now the addition of medical expenses, finances are an obvious source of concern for the young Hoover family of five. The three children are under fourteen years of age. Do you know what an awesome lodge we have? When I say lodge, I mean the people of course. Thanks to your generosity, baking, and raffle donations, our niece Miranda was able to exceed her goal!! The leftover donations went to the family which are very needed for Miranda's medical expenses and travel expenses to Syracuse Upstate Medical. Our lodge members worked along side family and friends and we were a well oiled machine. Thanks to ALL who gave their time for the benefit, baked, and donated raffle baskets! We cannot forget about our chefs extraordinar, John Tokos and Jay Beck. The meatballs, sauce, chicken parm was soooo delicious! They actually trained some new guys in the kitchen and they had a blast! Thanks to Nancy Graver for her PR connections at the Press, ideas to bounce off, tent side curtain negotiator, and all-around raffle expert. Alicia Beck for her organization and Feng shui expertise, Mark and Debbie for helping at the front gate with money and tickets, Liilie Fortenbaugh thanks for being my executive assistant, Helen and Char thanks for helping with the baked goods and baskets, Holly thanks for making the coffee, Herb and Steve thanks for parking/traffic control, thanks Bill Maney bar keep, Russ thanks for helping with the bathroom overflow incident, Ken and the House committee thanks for your support of our event, thanks to our Tuesday and Wednesday Pitch players donations, especially: Kathy, Gerri and JT (our thoughts and prayers are with you), Thursday card players donations, winners of pull tabs who donated their winnings back to Miranda. Thanks to Owego Lodge for donating the Lowes raffles, Wild Birds Unlimited raffle basket, Lia Sophia (donated $300 to Miranda)! Thanks to John Carey our DJ, who was later relieved by Bob Dussor. Thanks to Tim Turner and Jim Benardes for loading/unloading tables and chairs/ tent setup take down! Thanks also to our cousins and family and friends! Fox 40 News, and the people who just stopped by. Thanks to all of you that couldn't attend but were there in spirit and donated from afar, thank you so much! JC Lodge--The Little Lodge that does BIG Things! Thanks from the bottom of our hearts Wendy and Tim, and the Benardes family. To help this member and his family during this difficult time, some lodge friends are planning an all-day fundraiser on Saturday November 7th. Activities for the day include: A spaghetti and meatball dinner from noon to 6:00 pm Raffle baskets throughout the day 50/50 raffles Silent auction baskets A live auction and music by Carol Canfield starting at 7:00 pm Corporate sponsorships are also being solicited. Be sure to see the list of donors posted during the event and patronize them whenever possible. Add your company s name to the sponsorship list by providing a $100 corporate donation and you ll receive 5 spaghetti dinner tickets and 5 tickets to the evening activities All proceeds for the day will be presented to the Hoover family. You can help your lodge member by participating in as many of the day s activities as possible. Enjoy the spaghetti, try your luck at all the raffles, bid high and bid often at the rousing live auction. And enjoy the music by Carol. Donations of items to be included in all of the raffles are also welcome at any time. Volunteers to help out with the day s activities are welcome as well. Contact Doug Gardner ( dougg@akraturn.com ) if you have questions, would like to donate, or can help in any way with this event. You may have seen Dan, his wife Paula (Steve and Sharon Flint s daughter), and their family working Sunday breakfasts or Friday dinners. They ve also tended bar and helped with events such as our Community Christmas parties. They are clearly an asset to our lodge. Please help demonstrate that Elks Care Elks Share is more than just a motto. Be as generous as you can with your time, talent, and treasure. As a prelude and warm-up for this full day of activities, we will be holding a Can Drive on October 31 st. Drink all that you can, and bring those empty bottles and cans to the lodge. The Scouts will help us sort and bag them and The Can Man will collect the bags and process the refunds to be donated to the Hoovers. The community support of our activities is heartwarming and very much appreciated.
