1 Bulletin #1397 February 7, 2016 From The Minister s Pen Lest We Forget S ince the origin of the celebration in the late nineteen centur y, scholasticism has posited varied definitions of how we are to define African-American history. Some have defined it as: 1) An extension or corollary to American history; 2) The influence of Africa upon African-American history; 3) Significantly vital to Black liberation and power. The first serious literary work of African-American history was undertaken by George Washington Williams. His work, History of the Negro Race From 1619 to This literary work focused upon the arrival of the first slaves in the North American colonies and concentrated on the major events in American history that involved and/or affected African Americans. It was not until much later that African Americans, including historians, began to claim and celebrate Africa's history as their own particularly during the Harlem Renaissance. It was during this latter period that men of great academic renown like W. E. B. Dubois, in works like "The Souls of Black Folk, wherein he stressed African -Americans as the confluence of three different cultures: Africans, Americans, and African-Americans. It was during the period, the 1960s and 1970s, sparked by Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and untold other African-Americans that Blacks began to see and come to grips with their humanity and ethnicity. It was during this period that African-Americans began to see clearly African-American history was, and is, an essential component of black liberation and power. Summarily, therefore, African- American history is but a pause in the continuing struggle to remind a people that African-American people need to

2 Page 2 understand their past in order to seize the future. During the decades of the 1960s and 1970s, American universities and colleges began to accept African-American history as a legitimate field in the 1960s. Resultantly, many major universities and colleges began to offer classes and programs in African-American studies and history, as a sign of the increasing visibility and importance of the field of African-American history. To this end, President Gerald Ford declared February to be "Black History Month" in 1974 in the United States. Lest we forget, however, the idea of Black History Month is but an elongation of an original celebration fostered by Carter G. Woodson in 1926 when he proposed the idea of "Negro History Week". Negro History Week is the progenitor of today's Black History Month. That being so, the New Golden Heights church joins with each other and, as individuals, our brothers and sisters across the nation in celebration of Black History Month! Finally, to all the wonderful young, bright, and exciting youth of our church and to all who dare to strive for excellence and the illusive ideal, never forget, "If you are blessed by God to see a little farther down the road of life than your friend or neighbor, it is because of whose shoulders you are standing." [Your Minister] Because of Calvary! Let Us Pray For The Residents of Flint, MI Our church is in prayer for the people of Flint, MI. If you have paid but a small attention to news casts and social media, you are touched deep in your spirits for the citizens of this city. There is no question that this is a case of "man's inhumanity to man". We included the city of Flint in our prayer service on Wednesday night. Of those affected, our hearts go out to the innocent children. Over 100 children, (more than that) but that's the number reported, have tested positive for high levels of "toxic lead" in their blood. The city was cut off from the "fresh water" of the "Great Lakes" and the water of the "Flint River" was piped into homes. We, as a church, are concerned. We are concerned about our brothers and sisters there in the FLINT CHURCH OF CHRIST. Our Minister is in touch with leadership in Flint seeking to ascertain what we can DO as a church other than pray. praying, stay tuned! Keep

Both can be done at a time of your convenience at home. With our Bible correspondence course, free Bible study materials will be mailed to you and a certificate of completion will be awarded to you when the course is successfully completed. The second opportunity is an individualized class conducted personally with you. The individualized class will be conducted by the Minister, or a selected member, who will share with you the plan of salvation. If you are interested in either option, please indicate it on your visitor s card. Also, if you wish to speak directly with the Minister, please indicate same on your visitor's card. This 9:30AM Plan to be actively engaged in EVANGELISM throughout the year Begin by devoting two hours each month participating in Word on the Street. Make a personal pledge to be present THIS rsaturday at 9:30AM. Be a part of this great evangelism experience. Ladies! If such a person is too sick to go, something is wrong with his health. If he thinks he does not need to attend, then something is wrong with his education he does not know enough to understand his needs. If he sleeps too late, he is too lazy. If he does not have enough interest to go, something is wrong with his attitude; indifference was the great sin of the Laodicean church (Rev. 3:14-22). If he lets company keep him away, something is wrong with his courage and perception; he is trying to serve two masters. If he is too busy to go, something is wrong with his schedule the person that is too busy to serve God here is too busy to go to Heaven. Seriously, just why shouldn t all children of God want to be in his or her Bible class on Sunday mornings or Wednesday nights? Why shouldn t we want our children to be present?
