GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAIN EMMAUS COMMUNITY gsmec.org November 2015 GIVE THANKS WITH A GRATEFUL HEART Be thankful for all that you have and all that you can do. At any stage of life, we can still lift up each other in prayer! We are all called to be the hands and feet of Christ. Within our GSMEC community, we need certain people to step forward and guide the Community by serving on the Board of Directors. At the November gathering, there will be a vote on those people who have been nominated to serve on the Board. Take a moment to read the biographies of those who have been nominated so far and then read these job descriptions is God calling you to serve? If so, contact Loraine France (nanafrance2013@gmail.com)
NOMINEES FOR THE 2016 GSMEC BOARD Drew Burkley: Hi all! My name is Drew Burkley, Walk 99, Table of John (*clap*), and I am honored to serve on the GSM Emmaus Board. For me, my walk was like Costco: I didn t know what I needed until I got there. My experience made me a better man, a better Christian, and a better husband. Since my walk, I have attended gatherings and assisted the Agape team for Walk 101. My wife and I moved to the area about 2 years ago and have loved every minute of it. I work as child psychologist at Cherokee Health Systems where I specialize in children ages 2-7. I am a big fan of Star Wars, techno gadgets and retro video games (retro games are coming back!!). I also attend Trinity UMC where I sit on the Staff-Parish Relations committee and co-lead our Comedy for Christ group. I look forward to working with all of you in the near future! Deb Glenn: I have been in the Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community for nearly 20 years. I am a transplant from the Nashville Emmaus Community, where I went on my walk in Both my parents went on their walks in the Nashville community and both of my children went on their Chrysalis flights in the Nashville community. After moving to Knoxville, I became involved in GSMEC by working on an Agape team in 1996, and from there I have served in nearly every position, including Lay Director for the first Journey flights and Women's Walk #100, as well as 3 years on the Board. If elected, it would be my honor and privilege to serve again, and will pledge to do my best to uphold the model and traditions of the Walk to Emmaus. Mike and Suzy Ooten: Mike Ooten (Walk 53) and Suzy Ooten (Walk 54) have been active in the GSMEC community since their walks in They can usually be found in the kitchen on walks as part of the cooking team. They have served on the board for two terms in many capacities. Both Mike and Suzy have worked in the conference room and behind the scenes over the years. Mike served with the Upper Room as a Leadership Trainer for various communities throughout the south. Bryan Riley: Although he is a native Tennessean, Bryan made his Walk at Southeast Florida Emmaus number 8, Table of Peter. He has been married to his wife Lara for 8 years, has two grown daughters, Katie and Emily, and
attends Robertsville Baptist Church in Oak Ridge. Bryan says, I joined the GSMEC in 2007 and served as ATL on Walk 69. I have served on 6 conference room teams, most recently as LD for Walk 103. I have also served in the prayer chapel, sponsored or cosponsored pilgrims, [have] attended sendoffs and candlelights. YOU CAN HELP Each Board member should form a committee to help him/her do these things: Agape: collects and distributes agape gifts, agape food, and special letters Candlelight: puts the program together, leads the prayer for the pilgrims, cleans up the sanctuary after the service Communications: puts together and publishes the newsletter; sends out Blasts ( notices) Education/Sponsorship/Reunion Groups: puts together a training program twice a year for those who want to learn more about Emmaus; helps Community members form Reunion groups Gatherings: sets up and cleans up the Gathering venue; recruits 4 th day speakers Kitchen & Dining Room: recruits people to run the kitchen and dining room Literature & Supplies: orders all the purple books, crosses, manuals, etc.; makes sure the book table is scheduled Music & Entertainment: provides a list of names of people who could do music for a weekend, gathering or Saturday night Prayer: coordinates the 72 hour prayer vigil, puts together the prayer chapel, leads pray at Gathering and Sponsor s hour Registration: signs the Pilgrim s up, accepts fees, deposits fees, lets Kitchen know of special diet requirements, staffs a registration table at Send-off, verifies Pilgrim names & addresses for Agape Team Selection: helps form each Team, making sure qualification guidelines are followed for each team
category (table leaders, assistant table leaders, Table of Contents) Walk Support: coordinates Set-up, luggage carriers, After Glow/After Burn, Take Down, group photo, security It takes a village, a team, a Board of Directors! Join us, please! CHANGE IN SPRING MEN S and WOMEN S WALK Due to a conflict in schedule with a church activity, our Walk dates next spring have been changed Men: May 12-15, 2016 Women: June 2-5, Please mark this change on your TEAM WORK - As the saying goes "There's no I in Teamwork". We as a community know this better than any, when we pull together and help each other out then God receives all the Glory for his benefit. Sure it makes us feel good but it's not about us, we come together for the Pilgrims so they can experience what we have all experienced and show Agape Love unconditionally. As I am coming to the end of my term on the Board, I have been able to see all of these things come together first hand and I truly feel Blessed every time we complete a Walk and send Disciples back into God's Churches. It has truly been an Honor and Joy to serve alongside all of the Community. DeColores - Loraine calendar. SHARE THE EXPERIENCE Have you ever asked someone to go on the Emmaus Walk and had them tell you, Not now. We know that some of those not-nows are due to a lack of funds. GSMEC does have a scholarship fund and can help pay a large part of the registration fee. That fund exists due to the generosity of others in the Community. Please consider being a
donor to our Scholarship fund. Any amount is appreciated. Contact Sandy Hagan to make a donation. (shagan39@bellsouth.net) MISSING NOTEBOOKS Over the last few Walks, many Team training manuals have also walked, never to return! If you still have a manual sitting around, please return it soon contact Mary Larrabee at strick103@aol.com). and for all Gatherings. Our childcare provider is CPR certified. Please use this service for all children under the age of 14. During a Walk, for their safety, younger children should not be in the dining room or kitchen. Gatherings November 14 CHILDCARE IS PROVIDED At Send-off (Thursday, starting at 6:30 pm), Candlelight (Saturday, starting at 7:30 pm), Closing (starting at 4 pm) Men s Walk 105 May 12-15, 2016 Women s Walk 106 June 2-5, 2016 Final call!
