1 Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus and Chrysalis Community January 2008 From Our Emmaus Community Lay Director: If you missed the January gathering, you missed a Barn-Burner! The Emmaus and Chrysalis communities joined forces and brought in the new year with awesome praise and worship, testimonies and fellowship! Hats off to David Leach, Scott Milligan and the Chrysalis community for their attendance and leadership for the evening. The joy of the Lord and the presence of the Holy Spirit was overwhelming to all as the Name of Jesus was lifted high! In West Virginia we call that a time worthy of jumpin pews and throwin babies. God is sooo good, Amen? We enjoy the opportunity in announcing the newly elected board members as: Mike and Suzy Ooten, Ginger Billingsley, and Ralph Rayborn. Thank you for your willingness to accept this opportunity and responsibility to serve the Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community. We also honor those who have just completed their term of three years of service on the Board of Directors. Those leaving the Board are: Pam Wise, Terry and Denise Walton, and Chuck and Kathi Parkins. May the Lord bless you and multiply back to you the blessing you ve been to the Community. Finally, thanks to the participants in the Priority poster competitions. Next month we re focusing on sponsorship. Now is the time to talk to those who you have been waiting on to sponsor! A drawing will be held for another art prize at the gathering. To qualify for the drawing, Mike Ooten, the community registrar, will place your name in the hat, for every complete sponsorship he has received: Emmaus Walks and Chrysalis Flights. A complete sponsorship includes: completed pilgrim application, pilgrim fee, completed sponsor application and sponsors fee. If the walk or flight is full, you re still in this drqwing. Mark your calendar now! February 9 th Trinity UMC 6:30 DeColores, Bill Shinn Keepers of the Emmaus Databases Greetings! My name is Larry Scollard, GSMEC Walk #34, Table of Timothy. Since January of 2000 I have been looking after the databases that contain the information on Emmaus and Chrysalis community members and one of the sources of information on Emmaus past team service. The Team Selection Committee also maintains records of past team service for the team selection process. Although I have enjoyed carrying out these duties for the past 8 years, the time has come to pass on this task. Sandy Hagan has volunteered to take this on beginning in January Many of you know Sandy already. She has been a past women s walk Lay Director and a Board member in the GSM Emmaus Community. Sandy and her Reunion Group also man the Book Table on walk weekends. Sandy is involved in many different ministries and I appreciate her willingness to commit the time required to maintain our GSMEC data. Among other things Sandy will be printing the mailing labels for the GSMEC Newsletter each month, updating GSMEC member information as it is received, adding new GSMEC members following each Walk and Flight, adding team service information after each walk, and producing the Rosters which list all current members of the community. If there is any information that needs to be updated in your own GSMEC membership record, please forward that information to Sandy Hagan. Her address is: shagan39@bellsouth.net. We would love to be able to keep your mailing address, phone number, address, and church name information up to date. You may also send this information to Sandy by US mail at: Sandy Hagan P.O. Box 1063 Loudon, TN It has been quite a blessing to serve in this capacity and I wish you all a very happy and holy New Year in 2008! DeColores Larry Scollard

2 Page 2 Information on Our New Emmaus Board Member Volunteers Mike and Suzy Ooten were sponsored by their son and they went on walks 53 and 54 respectively. They have been very active members of the community since the spring of They have both served on conference room teams and helped behind the scenes on most every walk since theirs. They can usually be found in the kitchen and/or dining room on walks. They are both active in the Chrysalis Community and are former board members. They love to help the community in any capacity and they are both committed to God on their walks to serve where asked in the Emmaus Community. They are both very active in their church which is Trinity UMC. Ralph Rayborn was born in Dec in Lakeland, FL. I was the 5th boy at home then with 2 sisters and a brother born in the next 8 yrs. I learned that I really was the 11th male and the 13th child. 6 brothers and 2 sisters I will meet for the first time when our heavenly father calls me home. My mother died 3 days before there 66th anniversary.] I was 8 when I was saved, and been a BAPTIST all my life. As a child, I learned early that Sundays and Wednesday nights were set aside for worship time and praise for our LORD JESUS CHRIST. I was glad to see summer vacation time from school come, not just the vacation trip to meet relatives; but for Vacation BI- BLE School. I learned that HE is the same GOD regardless of the faith. I believed that GOD called me into HIS ministry after I got married, but the wife divorcing me for another man; told me that I couldn't follow what 1 Timothy 3 tells me that I needed to do. No, I couldn't go against GODS word, could I. HE is the KING, HIS WORD IS THE LAW for men to follow and not to change to his liking to live by. When GOD is in total control of us, everyone is happy with us as long as we let HIM have control of us. I believe and know that when we take control away from GOD, chaos is in control of us; and no one is happy. As a board member, I will promise you for the next 3 years that I will not be the controller, YOU don't want me that way; like wise, I don't want YOU as a controller. Since WE cant be the contoller, what WE all need to do is let OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST be in control of us and have HIM as the only controller. AMEN. Ginger Billingsly was born and raised in Knoxville, and has lived here all of her life except for 9 years right after she married Craig in She returned to Knoxville early in 1986 and raised two daughters here. She has been married 30 years. Erin is 26 and married to Matthew Tucker. They live in Antioch TN. Ashley is 22 and a senior at Emory and Henry College and will graduate in May.. She is a member of the Chrysalis Community. Ginger and Craig attend Cokesbury UMC and are active in Sunday School and the Celebrate Recovery Ministry of Cokesbury. Ginger s Walk to Emmaus in the fall of 2001 was truly an example of God's timing being perfect as it was the week of her birthday and the year her mother died. Through Emmaus she realized just how much God loves her and desired a personal relationship with her. SheI also realized that as with any relationship she had to do her part through study, prayer and service. She has participated in Emmaus, Chrysalis, Journey and Kairos Outside. God has blessed her in many ways and she is honored to be able to serve on the Emmaus Board. Pray for the Board Retreat The GSMEC Board will meet on February 1st and 2nd for the annual planning retreat. Please keep the members in your prayers as they discuss plans to make this the best year ever.

3 The Chrysalis/Journey teams are well on there way in preparation for our President's Day Weekend Flight (Sat. Feb Mon. Feb. 18). We are being led by Dale and Debbie Hensley, and we are so grateful for their hard work and great leadership for our upcoming flights. Please note that we are conducting dual Chrysalis/Journey flights together, so we can accept year olds for Chrysalis, but also year olds for Journey as well. We hope to have our biggest flight ever. We need your prayers, but we also need your hands and feet as sponsors for our youth and young adults. You may download applications from the website. Thanks for your continued love and support. Also, if you will be attending Resurrection in Gatlinburg with a youth group, be sure to stop by the Chrysalis table and bring along any prospective caterpillars to say hello. We look forward to seeing you there and will have information and applications for caterpillars as well. Peace. Come and join us for a special worship service on March 2 at Tuckaleechee Methodist Church in Townsend, at 7 pm. as we celebrate what God is going to do in the lives of the pilgrims. Ken says, that he is excited about the men's walk because there are six pilgrims (a large percentage of the current enrollment) from Message from Walk #73 Tuckaleechee UMC on the walk. He also encourages us to make an effort to fill this walk. Together, we can fill this walk! (At this writing we have 11 pilgrims.) Thanks again for all your prayers, support and effort! 7 Chrysalis & Journey News Butterflies On The Loose Page 3 WOW!! What a beautiful weekend we just experienced at the Chrysalis/Journey held President's Day Weekend. Thanks to all for your prayers, sponsorship, agape gifts, serving meals, and attending candlelight. Our kids were blown away by the love they experienced this weekend. We hosted 17 young ladies and 11 young men. The comments they shared at closing left little doubt that they encountered Christ's presence. Continue to pray for them as they begin their 4th day. The community also extends a special thanks and prays for a double portion of rest to our two wonderful leaders, Dale and Debbie Hensley. God is very good. Chrysalis Board Retreat The Chrysalis Board is planning a retreat in April. We are looking at April 25 and the morning of April 26 at Camp Wesley Woods. We will discuss plans for events and how to make our community better. You can get your name in the pot and win this acrylic painting on a drawing just by sponsoring a friend for one of the upcoming walks! Thank you for all your service this weekend of protection around the entire team, pilgrims and the community as we prepare for a most successful experience in Walk # 73! The testimonies from the Team and for another battle and celebrate the victory!!! Pilgrims confirmed, once again, what a Mighty God we serve! I thought I could Thank You Lord, praise You Jesus and keep my composure for closing until the come Holy Spirit! "Englishman" gave Jesus praise for making him a "new creature". I thought I heard all the angels in heaven give out a shout and I DeColores, Bill Shinn just couldn't hold back! Next time I think we'll do the "Holy Ghost Wave" until I can talk! My body is exhausted but it hurts so good! My prayer for you is a quick recovery and a 100 fold blessing for your time and service. Now is the time to talk sponsorship to those potential pilgrims while we're looking at Fourth Days. Yes, this was just the beginning and now you're allowed to "ANTICIPATE"! We can anticipate that He is faithful to finish what he has started in You and Them! Our focus is now on Walk # 74, April 17, with Joy Carleston at the helm. Pray a hedge AGAPE Luke 6:38...give and it shall be given unto you... Agape gifts are small tokens of love given to Pilgrims during their Walk to Emmaus. The Women's Walk number 74 is April 17th - 20th. We need AGAPE. As the new chair, I took a look at what is available in our "treasure" box and our supplies are very low. I hope that you will remember how special it was to find these small tokens (or trinkets as the men called them on Walk 73) on your bed, conference room table or at the tables during meals. The Women's Walk is going to be full with 32 Pilgrims. We need an assortment of Agape for bed Agape (32 pieces) and also for the conference room and dining room (60 items). I have a lot of ideas Message from Walk #74 that I have collected over the years and also have found some new ideas on the internet. If you need an idea, please let me know and I will respond quickly! It would be great for Agape to be brought to the gathering on April 12th at Trinity. Also, be thinking about your reunion group being Agape Outside Support during an upcoming walk. We will need an Agape Outside Coordinator for the Men's walk in the fall and for the Men's and Women's Walks in the spring of Give back to the GSMEC - it is fun and helps you to grow in your walk of servanthood! I have set up an address for agape requests. De Colores! Ginger Billingsley Agape Chairperson gsmecagape@live.com Greetings and peace in the name of God the Father: The team for Walk # 74 have been faithfully and prayerfully preparing to serve the Pilgrims and The Emmaus Community since January The team is absolutely awesome and have bonded so well since the first team meeting. 13 Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus and Chrysalis Community April 2008 From Our Emmaus Community Lay Director: A well-known preacher and author, Mark Rutland, from Pisgah, Georgia, wrote a book entitled The Finger of God. In this writing, he points out how a medical doctor diagnoses many problems by poking a finger in the general area of the hurt, while asking, Does it hurt here?... how about here?... and here? When you say here he pokes it again! When the major point of pain is located, he then begins to deal with the healing process and healthy restoration. I sensed from such great testimonies at the closing of Walk # 74, that the Balm of Gilead did a great deal of poking around too! Not only did He know your hurts, but He had all the cures! The Bible says Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. (II Cor. 3:17) The freedom from hurts, depression and guilt is an awesome release. You have a great witness for what a mighty God we serve! Sharing that joy with the Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community was effectual and life-changing. What the devil meant for harm, God turned around for the good! Tell somebody what a mighty God you serve! The same Spirit that rose Christ from the dead, dwells in you!!! (Rom. 8:11) Be the vessel He wants you to be, and He will empower you with an anointing that will set the captives free and mend the broken-hearted. Mark your calendars for April 28 th, 6:45 in the conference room, Fun Community Happenings at Central UMC for your 4 th Day Meeting. Check other important dates on the following pages. All of you who participate in supplying a basket for the May 10 th Gathering and Silent Auction, will be in a drawing for a long sleeved denim Emmaus shirt! Proceeds from all baskets will go to the Kitchen Fund for our friends at Central UMC. We ve invited them to join us, so bring an extra covered dish to feed the additional crowd. See you there! De Colores, Bill Shinn Come join the fun at our next Gathering. We are having our second basket auction! A good time was had by all at our last one and Robby Franklin, a real live auctioneer, will once again be helping bidders find just that right baslast time we had all kinds of baskets...ut baskets, an Italian dinner basket, doggie basket, toolbox and many more. Come join us and see what we have this time! Proceeds go to Central UMC s kitchen renovation fund.ket. Covered dish dinner starts at 6:30 followed by the basket auction with a short praise service. 14 Page 2 Greetings Brothers and Sisters in Christ! Walk #74 was an amazing and marvelous experience that was blessed continually by the Holy Spirit. On behalf of the whole team, I would like to thank the whole Emmaus community for all the acts of service and love that were extended during team formation and the Walk itself. Special thanks go to those who prayed for the Walk and the Pilgrims. The Outside Agape Team was incredible and efficiently took care of all the needs that arose. To all the Pilgrims who attended the Walk, thank you for the opportunity to serve you during this weekend. May God continue to be with you and bless you in your "Fourth Day"! De Colores, Joy Carelston J Love That Agape! Praise God from whom all blessings flow! The outpouring of Agape for Women's Walk 74 was awesome. Thank you to all the reunion groups and church group communities who sent Agape. We had some leftovers which I will catalogue and then perhaps for the Chrysalis flight and walks this fall we can add to these for those events. We had ideas available at the last gathering and this was well received with people taking home ideas they wanted to use for the agape gifts. Thank you, thank you, thank you GSMEC for the generosity and love you showed. Please be thinking about the fall flight and walks. This is a great way for new members of the community to contribute to the community. De Colores! Ginger Billingsly See You at Wesley Woods We are all looking forward to Friday night, and wanted to mention that we would like to take up an offering for Wesley Woods while we are there (like we did last time). If you are able and feel so moved, please come with cash or checkbook in hand! Also, try to come with at least one church/youth group in mind where Chrysalis does not have a presence at this time. This should be a Church or group you would consider visiting,or we could set up presentation to invite youth to attend. We would like to do this in May to try and get kids lined up for the fall flight. It might work best if the recommendation is for a place where you know someone who could give us access. Thanks See you guys Friday, it may try to rain at some point, and we will be in cabins, not the lodge, so bring something to keep you dry if needed. Susan Schleicher

15 Chrysalis & Journey News Hello and peace to all. What an exciting time to be a part of our Emmaus/Chrysalis community. Our flights and walks this Spring confirm that God is so good and is blessing the work being done for His Kingdom. The Chrysalis Board will hold its retreat April at Wesley Woods. We are always looking for ways to improve. One of our main areas of attention is looking for ways to expand into new churches and youth groups to draw from a larger base of people. If you know of youth directors, pastors, or members of other churches that do not currently sponsor youth for Chrysalis, and you think they would be willing to hear about us, let the Board know and we will talk and meet with them to encourage their participation. We also want to grow our Journey program where eventually it can stand on its own. We thank you for your continued prayers and support of Chrysalis. Friday May 2, at Trinity UMC in Knoxville, Chrysalis/ Emmaus praise and worship event. Starts at 6:30 pm, will have pizza ($2) followed by praise and worship service. Invite youth or adults who enjoy praising God and would be interested in knowing more about us. Saturday July 12, beginning early afternoon, will have our second annual Chrysalis/Emmaus gathering at Wesley Woods. Will have camp activities, covered dish, message and music. We expect a great crowd and will be fun for whole family. Put on your calendar now. More details to follow. 17 Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus and Chrysalis Community May 2008 From Our Emmaus Community Lay Director: School s out! School s out! The teacher wore her paddle out! Only you older folks will be very familiar with that one That s right! School is out today and the Shinn house is celebrating! We rented five videos and got a case of microwave popcorn. We re gonna stay up all night and not set the alarm! I m gonna wake up and go trout fishin. Then I ll take a nap. When I wake up, I m gonna smoke some fresh rainbows. I might mow the 10 fescue or perform some other domestic duty, if it doesn t take too long. And then I m gonna check the movie schedule for the location of the new Indiana Jones movie that just debued, debueted came out! We can go to the midnight movie, cause our days and nights are mixed up! We can sleep when we want, get up when we want and do anything we want! Our only responsibility is to let the schnauzers out. My name is Bill Shinn and the name of this talk is Priorities Some introduction, huh? Seriously speaking, we have had to drop everything so many times to close out this school year, we don t how we can catch up during the summer to start to school in August! Saying farewells-for-the-summer to the staff got many responses today. I d like to share two of them with you. One was from a substitute. When I asked him if he had plans, he said, I m gonna work miracles all summer! Expecting a story of a mission trip or something similar, he continued, I m gonna get some beer and wine and turn it into urine! Now I don t care who you are, that s funny! Now I don t care who you are, that s funny! He got many Hee- Haws in the mailroom, but then looking into his eyes, it became apparent that he wasn t joking. He is going to drink all summer!! How sad. The other response was from our bookkeeper. The other two art teachers and I were giving her a little token of art to show our appreciation for all the labors involved in a year of art supply purchases. Her response was, I really don t know, I think it s gonna be a hard summer for me.. On continuing, she said. I guess you didn t hear, but my Mother died Friday It just didn t come like I wanted it to and I didn t get to talk to her before she passed away. She went on explaining that she was in very ill and they knew it wouldn t be long, but she just wanted to be with her like when her father went to sleep and went to heaven. In the next minutes I could see the grief of the loss, turn to fear of a lonely summer without Mom. I could sense the Holy Spirit wanting to be her Comforter. And of course, you know the crybaby! I just couldn t leave her hanging. I said, I don t want to leave you now, and I started to weep. She started crying and said she didn t think she could cry anymore. So I started praying then the power of the Holy Spirit just fell in that conference room, and then the Peace came. Surprisingly when we opened our eyes, we were all alone those other teachers bugged out of there! She thanked me for praying for her and her countenance was one of still grieving, but of a peace knowing her mom is with the Lord. Aren t you glad you don t have a God that goes on vacation? He loves us so much and is always ready when we need Him. So many needs and situations come up whether we re ready or not. But He is always there! So you be like the Boy Scouts and Be Prepared! You can give a lift or a hand just in time. Don t let go of your priorities! Pray for us. We re heading for Texas to celebrate the coming of Emory Ann Gazaway, our first granddaughter!(june 10) See you when we return! DeColores! Bill Shinn

18 Page 2 Food for Thought "Emmaus is about Jesus Christ and His transforming love and grace - and how He will use us to serve Him. I am His servant, and so are you - the Body of Christ." Greg Engroff - International Lay Director All the fun things you enjoyed on your weekend. Where do they come from? The answer is YOU! If the community does not make agape, then there is no agape for the weekends. Please consider makeing more than one kind. It is a great thing to do with your reunion group. Table and Bed Agape is needed as well as dining room. The numbers for Bed Agape is 32, conference room and dining room table is 62. This is a good opportunity for you to go back through your notebook and review the topics of each talk and think about what you might make that reflects the central theme. Was there something that was particularly meaningful to you? Perhaps you had an idea about what would be a good agape gift. Now is the time to get started. There is a men's and women's walk this fall. We need gifts for both walks. Edible agape such as candy or gum should be fresh so you may want to wait till closer to the walk for that. I have lots of ideas if you need them. I have set up an agape e mail just for requests. gsmecagape@live.com is the address. Please let me know if you need ideas and I will be happy to see if I can help. Also consider setting time aside to come and help in the kitchen, set up for a meal, serve a meal or clean up afterwards. This is a hugh need and seems to be overlooked. It is fun to serve the pilgrims. De Colores - Ginger Billingsley, Agape Coordinator Famous Emmaus Basket Auction If you missed the BASKET AUCTION, you certainly missed a fun evening. We had around 31 baskets that were auctioned off by Emmaus own auctioneer, Robbie Franklin. Robbie had the crowd in stitches for most of the evening. He started the evening off with highest bidder getting their choice of baskets the choice, a beautiful gardening basket. Then the bidding began on the remainder of baskets as Robbie bantered with the crowd. Baskets were wide in variety. We had pamper yourself baskets, tea baskets, stress relief basket, oldies basket, hand crocheted afghan in a basket, Italian dinner basket, cookie making basket, doggie basket and many, many more. Everyone had a good time those that bid and those that didn t just ask O.B. Scruggs about his bidding technique! Amongst all the fun, we were able to raise over $1500 for Central UMC s kitchen renovations. Hope to see you next year! Attention! The regularly scheduled Chrysalis Board Meeting will be postponed until Tuesday, May 27th (instead of May 19th). We will be discussing team needs and the upcoming Flight/Journey. Come on out to Trinity UMC at 6:30 the Tuesday after Memorial Day. Another reminder... Team Meeting Dates are: June 28th, July 26th, and August 15th 16th. 26 Greetings from your Community Lay Director From Our Emmaus Community Lay Director: For all of you in the "education business", you better hurry up! Things aren't quite done yet and our time is running out. When we look at the limits of our time and the tasks left to do, we must get serious about priorities. Oh no, not another priority talk! Well, it could be. But it's not intended to be. The school year is gonna start whether I'm ready or not. If I don't consider what I need to do now, I will consider it later! But then I won't be ready, I'll be in a panic, and I'll be confused in making snap decisions that will effect how successful my choices might be. This is not news! You already know this. Did I hear an "Amen"? For all of you in the "GSMEC business", you better hurry up! Things aren't quite done yet and our time is running out. When we look at the limits of our time and the tasks left to do, we must get serious about priorities. Oh no, not another priority talk! Well, it could be. No, this is not a typo! Team meetings for Chrysalis Journey/Flights, Men's Emmaus Walk #75, and Women's Emmaus Walk # 76 are in progress! Each event has openings for catepillars and pilgrims.(see Sponsorship page in this edition) Here's some "back burners" that need to come to the front burners. Sign-ups for prayer vigils, Agape gifts, agape snacks and prayers for each event is a NOW THING! Here's another now thing. It's time for nominations for the 2009 new Board of Directors. I want you to consider who you would think would be an excellent board representative, who loves the Emmaus community, who is active in our events, who has served on at least two walks and can committ to a three year term. That is a person you should nominate for the Board. To make a nomination, just call, write or any present Board member to get their name on the ballot. We will check on their acceptance of the nomination and introduce them at the September gathering. The election will be at the October gathering. Serving on the Board of Directors has been awesome experience in seeing God use the community to further His work through fellowship, worship and service. Pray for these new members to rise to a new level of service through leadership. This could even mean YOU! Oh no, we're back to priorities! I love you all and God has a plan for you! See you at the August gathering.(august 9) De Colores, Bill Music, Music, Music This is a request for anyone interested in being on the men s or women s music team as the technical person to operate the lyrics equipment, please contact me or Jerry. Thanks. Don Manley Board Member Nomination Time It is time to submit nominations for 5(five) Board members for These nominees will give a short bio and be introduced to the community at the September gathering and voted on at the October gathering. We do not want 5(five) nominations, but we want to vote for five from a list of many. The nominees should be active in Emmaus events, have worked on at least 2(two) Walks and can commit to the 3 (three) year term on the Board of Directors. Nominations can be given to any Board member and we will then ask if they would serve if elected. Pray for leaders to rise to the call to serve with the gifts God has graced them for the upcoming years. We Need Your Recipes I am in the process of collecting recipes for a Community Cookbook and would appreciate any recipes you care to share for this project. 27 Chrysalis & Journey News Page 3 Greetings to all. Hope everyone is enjoying there summer and making preparations for our fall flights and walks. On behalf of the Chrysalis Board, we want to thank all who visited and enjoyed a day at Wesley Woods for our July gathering. It was a beautiful day to spend in the Woods. Thanks especially to David Leach and all the camp staff who spent their Saturday opening camp to us. Thanks also to our musicians and Stan Johnson for his message of encouragement. We are just a month away from our Labor Day Flight/Journey. Our teams are being lead by John Grigsby and Chris Northcutt. We will again be hosting dual Chrysalis and Journey Flights together. Chrysalis ages are and the journey ages are 18/ We hope to one day be able to split the Journey to fly alone, but for now we feel it is better to have it along with our Chrysalis Flights than to not offer at all. Please be in prayer for our teams, speakers, and leaders as we prepare for what we know will be a Godly experience. Please prayerfully consider extending invitations to youth and young adults who are ready and would benefit from the weekend experience. God needs our hands, feet and hearts to bring those in our circles to be closer to Him. Thanks for loving and supporting our Chrysalis community as you have. Please come see us over the Labor Day weekend and serve a meal, spend some time in our prayer chapel, and support the prayer vigil(contact David Ault). Please also be in prayer that the work on Central UMC kitchen will be complete in time for our flight. Peace. Fly with Christ. 29 Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus, Chrysalis, and Journey Community From Our Emmaus Community Lay Director: August 2008 Are you on the Team? As planning begins for each Walk or Flight, the question circulates among the community Are you on the team for the upcoming walk? The answer should always be Yes! Some people have to pay a full fee in order to serve the Pilgrims on upcoming Walks. Others can serve to their hearts content for free. Some members of the team give talks, others lead table discussions, and some ring the bell to brighten our day. Some members of the team serve on the prayer vigil, others make pieces of agape, others serve meals, and others hold candles. Are you getting it yet? Every single member of the Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community is on the team for every single Walk and Flight! It s just a matter of what your role is and how much that role will cost you in terms of time and money. All of us recognize the importance of each team member fulfilling his or her role to the fullest. However, we tend to keep the idea of a team member narrowly focused to include only certain roles on the Walk. What if the Candlelight Team members didn t show up? What if the Table Agape Team failed to come through? Each and every Walk, there are team positions available for which there is no team fee required. Serving a meal, making a snack, praying, fasting, writing an agape letter to a Pilgrim you don t know, writing an agape letter to the Walk that can be shared in the conference room, participating in entertainment, attending Sendoff/Candlelight/Closing these can be done without waiting for the Lay Director s invitation. So the next time you re asked if you re on the team, be sure to answer Yes and tell the person what role you ve decided to fill. Thoughts About Prayer: For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. 2 Chronicles 16:9 Have you ever thought that God is like a hummingbird? I did this morning as I was sitting on our deck watching one of the hummingbirds come to the feeder. I know that doesn t sound all that unusual but there is more to the story. We have had the feeder up and then down for a few days to try and get the bees to go away. Then we got a new feeder but it wasn t any better. So then we got out the old feeder but after a couple refills it started leaking. We took it down but it took us a couple days to get a new feeder and get it out. Well, that did not keep the hummingbird from looking for it. We would see him fly to where the feeder should be but then settle for the geranium or the impatiens in the pots. Monday the new feeder went up and the bees were all over it. Down again, back to the store and then the feeder designed to keep out the bees went up last night. Our hummingbird was back this morning! He has hung in with us through the ups and the downs over the summer and seems to be the proprietor of our feeder. He has guarded the feeder when another hummingbird popped in and has been faithful in his watchful vigil for us to supply his food. God is watchful and has his eye not only on us but on those in the world around us. He is encouraging and guiding us everyday. He does not abandon us when we mess up or fall short of his expectation. He keeps looking for us and drawing us back to him. He expects us to reach out to others to be his hands and feet in the world. He gives us our thoughts and words when we allow him to speak through us. He guides our thoughts as we pray and meditate. His expectation is that we are seeking him in prayer and meditation so that he can guide our thoughts and actions. Emmaus is all about drawing closer to God in our spiritual walk. Has your walk enriched your spiritual life with your church and community? Has your prayer life become deeper and richer? Do you feel blessed by your Emmaus community and the role that it has played in drawing you closer to God? Do you know someone that may be seeking to draw closer to God? As you pray are you praying that God is guiding you to speak to that someone so they may be blessed also? As you pray for that guidance please also pray for the team that is preparing to lead the walks. Pray also for volunteers for the dining room, kitchen, agape, prayer vigil, etc. The needs are ongoing and more than mentioned. Your prayers before, during and after the walk allow us to be God s instruments to enlarge and enhance his community of faithful followers. Join the band and let s get marching! 30 We Are Called to Serve Being a Christian is a responsibility. Galations 5:13 reads: You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature ; rather, serve one another in love. As the body of Christ we are called to be servants; We are called to be humble and put others first; We are called to help others; We are called to serve... To whom much is given, much also is required. (Luke 12:48) To whom much is given. Think about that. What have we been given? We have been given a gift that can be matched by no other, the gift of salvation and eternal life through acceptance and belief in Jesus. We give gifts to each other throughout the year for various reasons. Maybe it's just me, but there are few gifts that I can remember all the specifics about. What about you? Do you remember what you got last Christmas, for your last birthday? What I do remember is the gift I received when I went on my Walk to Emmaus. I remember the gift of love and acceptance from my table leader, the lay director, and Jeanne West who I connected with and who has continued to love and mentor both me and my husband, Craig. I remember the gift of the spiritual director who helped me unlock the hard heart I had and to begin to face the many issues that would eventually lead me to where I am today. J God brought these people together for the walk I was on. God's gift to me came in the form of the people who served on Walk 46 in November of He knew who I needed. They listened to the call and agreed to serve. You have been called to serve on a walk. It is an awesome responsibility, commitment of time and energy and love, both to God and to the pilgrims. You may have been called to be a table leader, a prayer chapel person, an Agape team member. You may have been called to serve by helping with set up, coming to send off candle light or closing, making Agape Gifts or food, or serving a meal. The point is, you have been called, maybe not by someone on the telephone, but by the nudging of the Holy Spirit. Please listen to the call you have received. In AA the 12th step is "Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs." The Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community has over 2000 people in it's community. We should be seeing more pilgrims from past walks at our weekends. It is a gift you can give and also receive. Please answer the call, come and see what God is doing. Come help in the move to further His Kingdom. Ginger Billingsley God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey Him and the power to do what pleases Him. Phillipians 2:13 Music, Music, Music This is a request for anyone interested in being on the men s or women s music team as the technical person to operate the lyrics equipment, please contact me or Jerry. Thanks. Wanted: Pilgrims for the Men s Walk We have 11 applications for the upcoming men s walk. Please pray about sponsorship and send that special person. We need 9 more in order to hold the walk. We Need Your Recipes Don Manley Board Member Nomination Time It is time to submit nominations for 5(five) Board members for These nominees will give a short bio and be introduced to the community at the September gathering and voted on at the October gathering. I am in the process of collecting recipes for a Community Cookbook and would appreciate any recipes you care to share for this project. I have a few already however many, many, many, (did I say MANY) more are needed, so get out your recipe cards and dust off those cookbooks. I need every thing from drink to dessert recipes. 31 Chrysalis & Journey News FLYING ON LABOR DAY Our upcoming Labor Day Chrysalis/Journey flights are almost upon us. The teams have been working hard to prepare and our leaders, John Grigsby and Christine Northcutt, have done a great job of leading and preparing our hearts and minds for the work ahead. All we need now is you. There is still time to be a sponsor of a young male or female for a life changing weekend. Since we are combining Chrysalis/ Journey together, we can accept ages (Chrysalis if still in high school) and (Journey if out of high school). If you are gathering a last minute application, contact Scooter at on how to get the application in timely. Do not put in mail at the last minute, we might not get in time. God Bless! As you may know, due to delays in the kitchen renovations at Central UMC, it is likely we will not have use of the kitchen or cleaning facilities. We will make do and nothing will deter our flight. However, it is likely we will be eating cold breakfast and cold cuts for lunch, as this takes no preparation. We hope to grill or arrange for outside food prep for at least our dinners. If anyone or group would like to organize some prepared foods or can bring extra snacks, please contact Scooter or Brooke Blair at Peace. Fly with Christ. 33 From Our Emmaus Community Lay Director: Is it for me?? G r e a t S m o k y M o u n t a i n E m m a u s, C h r ys a l i s, a n d J o u r n e y C o m m u n i t y Vol. 2 September 2008 Those of us who are baby boomers will remember when our homes had only one phone. It was black and sat on a telephone stand which was usually in the hallway. There were no telemarketers, call waiting or caller ID. In fact, some of us had a party line that we shared with three other families to save on the phone bill. There were strict rules of etiquette, like no calls during dinner, keeping the calls brief and only family calls on Sunday. Living with a teenage girl, Aunt Bernice, in the house, the ringing of the phone was accompanied by a chorus of Is it for me? Today we have cell phones, blackberries, I-phones, and IM so we don t miss that important message or call. But are we so busy we missing the most important call of all? God has chosen to touch and use each of us in different ways following our three-day weekend. Each of us have responded to His call in our own way. There is no doubt that only a very small number, if any, leave the weekend unchanged. I doubt that any of us left Central UMC and became a new person overnight. For most, the changes in our lives are gradual and then we look back and say, WOW how my life has changed during my Fourth Days! If we are focused and heed God s call, our lives follow the pattern of the weekend. We start out slowly and then build. First, we become more active at our home church. Finding time we thought we never had to do little things. Reassessing our priorities and investing in what is really important to us. For many of us, we are called to become more active in the Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community (GSMEC). I remember the first time to help serve on what is now called the Agape Team. I was blown away at all the activity behind the scenes. Only then did I begin to appreciate the sacrifices others had made for me. When I signed up for the prayer vigil, I didn t know how I was going to pray for the pilgrims by name since I didn t even know who they were or what their needs were. But, of course, the Holy Spirit knew exactly what their needs were and responded to each where they were in their specific situation. So why not turn of the TV, computer and cell phone and listen for that most important call of all and Yes, It s for You! DeColores, Bill Shinn Dire Need for Agape Our supply is very low. We need Agape for the upcoming women s walk. The Britannica says "agape as in the New Testament, is the fatherly love of God for humans, as well as the human reciprocal love for God." The term necessarily extends to the love of one s fellow man. Agape in Emmaus is that extension of the love of God towards our Pilgrims. The agape gifts that you make are an act of unconditional sacrificial agape love the purpose to remind the pilgrims of Gods love for them. Thank you for all the acts of agape in the past you may think many of them have gone unnoticed, but our Lord knows. We need Agape for the Women's Walk which begins October 2nd. We need 32 for Bed Agape for the Pilgrims and 60 for Table/Conference Room Agape. Remember how much those small tokens meant to you when you were a Pilgrim? I still have my Agape from 2001! Showing God's love through making Agape is a blessing. As usual, if ideas are needed, call or e mail me. DeColores Ginger or gsmecagape@live.com James 5:16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results. Walk # 76 for the women will send off on Thursday, October 2, 2008 which is only a little over a week away! Please join with me in praying for the pilgrim s scheduled for this walk, the team for the walk and all of the volunteers that are needed to make this walk successful. The challenge of the kitchen is also a prayer need. There is a tremendous need for volunteers for each Walk or Flight. With the possible lack of a usable kitchen, food prep and serving is a real challenge and the Agape Team needs lots of community help. There will be plenty to do anytime you can come. If you would like to help with breakfast 6-6:30AM would be great. To help with lunch plan on being there around 11-11:30AM. If you plan to help with supper 4:30-5:00 is a good time to arrive. Breakfast is usually served at 7:30, lunch at 12:00 and supper at 5:30. Agape needs help all 72 hours and would be so grateful for you to come even for 30 minutes. If you have not helped with a Walk or Flight for a while,,please plan to change that fact with Walk #76.

35 Chrysalis & Journey News Greetings to all. Hope everyone is well and the next steps/4th days are going well for all our new butterflies and pilgrims. We have had so much fun and felt such power from our praise and worship sessions of late, that we want to offer another opportunity to gather in fellowship and worship with our friends. On Saturday, November 1, at Trinity UMC, we will gather for some food, fellowship, and worship. David Leach and his musical friends will lead us in song and we may have a few guests to share a word as well. Times will be announced. This is a good opportunity to bring your youth and adult friends who may not have experienced a Chrysalis Flight/Emmaus Walk and introduce them to community members. Peace. Scooter We will be having our annual "Chili Cookoff" at the October 11th Gathering at Trinity UMC on Western Avenue, Knoxville. We will gather at 6:30. Please bring your best chili, favorite chili fixins or other dish and help judge the chili. Hope to see you all there! 37 From Our Emmaus Community Lay Director: Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus, Chrysalis, and Journey Community December 2008/ January 2009 Peace Be Unto You I hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas Season and precious memories made while celebrating Jesus and looking to a New Year. My youngest daughter, Becky, and son-in-law, Ben, tickled us with a story of their 5,000-member Baptist church in Texas. In their Christmas production with full light show, orchestra and choir, our six month old grandbaby, Emory Ann, was Jesus, wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. In such a huge program with all the brass and lights and song, Jesus slept! I mean slept! Becky, who was acting Mary s part, tried to unwrap Jesus just to wave a foot just to let the audience know that Jesus was real and not just a baby doll. But her swaddlings were in a tangle and she couldn t get her out. Meanwhile, Emory Ann was sleeping in heavenly peace! Well, the Gospel says, Jesus is our Peace and the Peace that passeth all understanding. Not only then, but He is the same yesterday, today and forever. In our frustrating times of politics, finances, and negative outlooks, we need more than ever to remember that that same baby is now on the Throne and is Lord of All. And He, the King of all Kings is not anxious, He s not in fear, and He is praying for YOU! He loves you and has a special plan for you in So put a priority check in those New Year resolutions, and top the list with moving up to the next level in your walk with Christ. Shalom. As out-going Community Lay Director, I want to thank you all for wait a minute. What has this Directorship meant to you and what are you going to do with it? As your Lay Director, I have seen the Love of Christ work through the body of this community, to make opportunities for pilgrims and butterflies to rise up in leadership in their local churches. Continuing to share this great experience has become old hat for many who have been there, done that, and you have disappeared. I feel I can say that, because I m an old hat from Walk #7. What am I going to do with it? I am going to make EVERY EFFORT to plan ahead in 2009 and sponsor someone on EVERY walk and EVERY flight! If only 35 of you would make this same pledge, every event would be full and we would never have to deal with the question, Do we have enough applications yet? 35 out of over 2300?? Are you kidding me? Take the challenge. Be a sponsor for 2009! I Love You All! De Colores, Bill Shinn Nominations for Serving As you already know, there is an Emmaus Board of Directors for the Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community. There are 15 total board positions and we still have 3 positions available to fill. If you have a desire to serve our community in an administrative capacity, we would love to consider you for a position on the board. The open positions are to be filled by individuals who are willing to attend monthly board meetings, head up a committee, and determine policy and procedures; it is definitely a working board. We value everyone s input, and as a board member, you will be asked to be the eyes and the ears for our community. Being a member of the Great Smoky Emmaus Community Board of Directors allows you to play a significant role in helping shape the future of our Community. If you are interested in serving in this capacity, or know someone that you would recommend, please contact Bill Shinn (865) , shinn.bill@yahoo.com, or Mike Ooten (865) , mike@ooten.com. Wonderful News!!! GSMEC has a new grill. Yes, really!! The grill was designed and built by our own incoming Lay Director Mike Ooten. It is absolutely beautiful and will be used for the first time at the Chrysalis flight in February. This is so exciting! However, it does come at a cost and this is not the only thing needed by the community. We presently do not have a computer program for our needed website. We thought that we had one but found out that it was pirated; therefore, we could not use it. The cost of a good program is $400. We need help from our generous community members. Donations to the Grill/Computer Program fund can be sent to either Mike Ooten or Melissa Zollinger. Help with these projects is much needed.

38 Page 2 What are Group Reunions? Group Reunions are accountability groups and every Christian needs to be a part of one (or more). Examples of these accountability groups are members of the Emmaus Community who form a group, a UMW group, a cluster of folks having a weekly breakfast meetings before work, a close-knit Sunday School class, or any other set of people that meet to support each other in prayer and friendship. The Day Four booklet that is given to each pilgrim in their packet is a wonderful resource. If you have not taken the time to read it, please do so. It will clarify any misconceptions some mayhave had about group reunions as well as providing help in forming one, if this is a need in your Christian life. Some group reunions have undertaken some wonderful agape gifts for GSMEC; for instance, a women s group in Lenoir City takes care of the book table at every walk, both men s and women s. This is a big job and an important job and these ladies prayerfully decided that they would do it. There have been other Group Reunions that have totally taken care of the After Glows for a Walk. Another actively supporting a member with deteriorating health until she went to be with Jesus. Please take the time to re-evaluate and pray about your accountability groups. Reminder If you sponsor a pilgrim the cost is $40. The cost for the pilgrim to go on a flight is $75. Each team member pays $50. Online Data Base As of August 2008, GSMEC has an online database for our entire community. We have access to the entire roster, member experience, volunteers, online registration, online prayer vigil, walk histories, and much more. The web address is: Information about Chrysalis & Journey The Chrysalis Community is again pleased to offer an opportunity to go on a Flight (14-18) or a Journey(18-24) February 14-16, Who do you know that would be blessed by this experience? Applications are on the website, and all the Chrysalis/Journey elves are busily preparing for the weekend. Enjoy the blessing of sponsorship, and come be part of this uplifting experience. Liana Woods (liana3@bellsouth.net) and David Agee ( ageedc@yahoo.com ) are leading our upcoming flights if anyone has questions or needs information about the February flights. We also would love to have you join us as a board member. We only meet once a month, and we can use your help! Contact Scooter Milligan if you have any questions (fsm@littleandmilligan.com).
