5 Cheryll Sumner, researcher, has a Benjamin Rhodes, Jr, d. bef 1870, married to a Martha J Bailey, b. 1836, who later married Isaac D Sims. That Benjamin, age 30, and Martha Rhodes were still in Butler Co in 1860 (spelled Roades), too young to be the Benjamin that I think was married to Sarah Murphy Mullins. Duke Vickrey thinks that one was son of Redden Rhodes. So does Mildred Stinson in her Rhodes family history on Butler Co rootsweb Pioneer Families page. Notes for AUGUSTUS MULLINS: He was in the same company as Wilson Murphy, Jr. His age at enlistment in Mar 1862 was given as 18, but he was listed as only 15 on the census of 28 Jul 1860, so he may have been only 16 or 17. His death claim was recorded as filed by Martha Mullins, widow, but he was very young to be married. Possibly that record was in error and the claim was really filed by his mother, Martha Mullins. 7 Generation No JOHN HIRAM 4 MULLINS (JOSIAH 3, SARAH 2 MURPHY, JOHN 1 ) 18 was born Abt He married DELILAH KELLY 20,21 29 Nov 1864 in Butler County, Alabama 22, daughter of OSBORNE KELLY and ELIZABETH MILLER. She was born Abt Notes for JOHN H MULLINS: The middle name Hiram and the proximity to the Miller family make me suspicious that John H s mother might have been Martha Miller who reportedly married Joseph Mullins (see notes on Miller family from Ann Evans, Nacogdoches researcher), but I have seen no real evidence for this speculation. Josiah (erroneously enumerated or transcribed as Isaac on the population schedule but correctly as Josiah on the slave schedule) and Martha Mullins, with 10 slaves, were enumerated almost adjacent Benjamin and Dicy Miller Rhodes in 1850 Monroe County, Alabama. Dicy was sister to Martha Miller. There was also a Joseph and Martha Mullen, with 9 slaves, listed in Butler County in 1850 on both the population and slave schedules. However, their ages were about 5 years off from that of Josiah and his Martha. Their four children s ages matched those of Josiah s children, but the two older were girls instead of Josiah s two older boys, and none of their names matched. The slaves ages and sex did not match those of Josiah s slaves. Texas Confederate Pension appl #26927: John Hiram Mullins. On first application, dated 13 Mar 1914, resident of Mills County for 20 years, PO Goldthwaite; resident of Texas since Served as private from Aug 1861 until close of war in Co F, 18th Al Inf Reg't. On 11 Feb 1914, Frank Schenck, age 80 years, PO Iredell, TX, signed affidavit testifying to Confederate service of J H Mullins: "I first became acquainted with J H Mullens in the early part of 1863, in Mobile, Alabama, in the 18th Ala Regt with Co F. We were together several months, and then reorganized and went to Tennessee. We were separated for a time in separate divisions, but came together at the battle of Missionary Ridge and were both in that battle... He was a volunteer soldier... After the battle of Missionary Ridge, we were separated and I did not see him any more until after the close of the war." On 10 Mar 1914, C A Mangham (name spelled both Mangham and Manghum), age 69 years, PO Thrall, TX, Williamson County, signed affidavit testifying to Confederate service of J H Mullins: "I have known J H Mullens ever since the summer of 1861 and I first knew him at Butler Springs, Alabama... J H Mullens enlisted in Co F, 18th Al Regt...the 2nd day of Aug 1861 at Butler Springs in Butler County, Alabama, and served until the close of the civil war... I, C A Manghum, was on the ground at the time J H Mullens was enlisted at Butler Springs, State of Alabama; I, C A Mangum, enlisted at the same time and place..." Item # from Adjutant General's Office, War Department, 19 Mar 1914, to Commissioner of Pensions, State of Texas, Austin: "The records show that J H Mullen (name also borne as J H Mullins, but not found as John H Mullens), private, Co F, 18th Al Inf, CSA, enlisted August 2, 1861, at Butler Springs, Al, and that he was paroled June 13, 1865, at Montgomery, Al, by Major Ross Wilkinson, provost marshal, 16th Army Corps; date of capture not shown." Undated application by Mrs J H Mullins for mortuary warrant contains statement by Dr J M Campbell that J H Mullins died of mitral stenosis. The application stated that the body of J H Mullins (d. 12 Feb 1925) was prepared for burial on 13 Feb 1925 and buried in the IOOF (Independent Order of Odd Fellows) Cemetery, Mills County, Texas. On 18 Feb 1925, Mrs J H Mullins signed authorization for mortuary warrant, as payment on funeral expenses, to be paid to E T Fairman of Goldthwaite, TX. The mortuary warrant was mistakenly sent to Mrs J H Mullins (husband died 12 Feb 1925). There are several letters from E T Fairman to the Comptroller's office and from the Comptroller's office to Mrs J H Mullins trying to recover the funds in the mortuary warrant, one stating that "this party is old and childish and we are not able to convince her that this check is not a pension warrant." 8/2/2007 Alabama Homing 7
