2 Page 2 Governor s Message By Laura Stocker Indiana Society Governor A s I write this Governor s Message, the last of my term as your Indiana Society Governor, I do it humbly with gratitude for the honor I ve had to serve you. It has been three years filled with challenges, accomplishments, excitement, and celebration. None of which would have been possible without the dedicated support of officers, assistants, and Past Governors who are the Indiana Society s Board. My heartfelt thanks to all! In review, recall multiple initiatives were underway when my Governorship began. Educational endeavors such as Pilgrim in the Schools and Scholarship Awards remain firmly in place. The addition of our participation in genealogical fairs, Midwestern Roots and Indiana Genealogy & Local History Fair, have not only introduced us to potential members, but also allowed us to share the story of our Pilgrim forefathers with a wider audience. This exposure has generated much interest and work for our Historians. With incorporation completed in early 2013, it was imperative that the Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants (ISMD) complete submission requirements for IRS approval of non-profit status (501(c)(3)). The benefit accorded our members through tax deductions for contributions and sales tax exemptions deemed approval a necessity. As part of the process, ISMD Bylaws were reviewed and updated for clarification and compliance with today s practices. With much surprise, on August 11, 2014, the IRS approved our application in just eight months with no corrections to be made! During the 40 th General Congress in Plymouth, September 2014, ISMD received a generous offer from former Elder General Rev. Cory Randall, an ISMD member, to sponsor an exclusive showing of Pilgrim Home: In Search of Scrooby Manor. Not only was the offer graciously accepted, but a challenge undertaken to find a proper screening venue and arrange travel for Jane Williams, the movie s director and producer. The screening event at the Indianapolis Museum of Art brought out a large attendance for a Spring Membership meeting. Still in the minds of all of us is the ISMD 100-year Anniversary Celebratory Dinner held during the recent General Board of Assistants Meeting in Downtown Indianapolis. Not only did the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) recognize this significant milestone with a Certificate of Recognition, but the event provided an opportunity for us to share our history with fellow Mayflower descendants from across the country and Canada. Hosting GSMD was a three-year project supported by numerous society members. I heard nothing but praise from our GSMD guests for our celebration and hosting efforts. Again, thanks to all who helped! As I complete my term, be assured that you will be in good hands with your next Governor, Linda McGlothlin. She has served admirably as Deputy Governor and knows our society well. As I wrote in my first Governor s Message, I hope I have fulfilled my task to lead our society effectively, efficiently, and with enthusiasm. Best Regards to All, Laura Stocker Governor, Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants

This event featured nationally known speakers, one of whom was Cece Moore, known as the genetic genealogist. Her specialty is using DNA to pick up where the traditional paper trail has left off. This was the perfect follow-up to our April program with our speaker and historian, Laura Smith. Volunteers from our society helped spread the word about our organization at this conference. 10 Page 10 Indiana Mayflower Society Governor Laura Stocker 100 TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER WELCOME AND OPENING REMARKS (As delivered by Laura Stocker, Indiana Society Governor, during 2016 GBOA Meeting) On behalf of the Indiana Society, I d like to welcome all our visitors from across the United States and Canada to Indianapolis. The Indiana Society covers the entire state of Indiana and has about 440 members. Among you tonight there are 58 people from Indiana, many members attending a membership meeting for the first time. As Governor, I can t begin to tell you how delighted I am that you have chosen tonight to celebrate the 100 th Anniversary of our Society and the Bicentennial of the State of Indiana. On the 21 st day of March 1916 the General Society of Mayflower Descendants authorized 35 chartered names to form a Society in Indiana. Did you notice the 100-year-old charter to my right? It is a custom of the Indiana Society for the charter to reside with the Governor. Many times I ve taken this beautiful document out to be reminded of our history, names like Winslow and Bradford. It appears that in the last 100 years, we ve lost those surnames among our membership roster. But I have a personal story to share. I ve been a member since At the first membership meeting I attended, I turned to the gentleman sitting next to me for introductions and he said his name was Miles Standish. True story, his name was Miles Standish! A wonderful man, now deceased, he was a professor at the Indiana University Dental School. I mentioned Indiana currently has about 440 members. I d like to introduce you to our newest member, approved just 20 days ago, Diana Soule McDowell, Indiana #1531. And, she was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts! Our active member with the lowest number of 535 is present tonight. He has been a member since October 1967, nearly 50 years. He s Indiana s Captain and roving photographer during this event, Bryant Pedigo. During the reception tonight, a nice lady approached me and told me she had a connection to an Indiana Governor. Her name is Beverly Spooner who came here from Colorado. Her uncle, Charles Winthrop Daniels, was Governor from 1957 to Beverly, tell us your story. Thank you. What a surprise! With us tonight are six of our eight surviving Governors. It is their strong leadership that has made the Indiana Society what it is today. As I call the names of the Past Governors, would you please stand to be recognized and appreciated: Richard Gould ( ), Kathryn Lerch ( ), Sarah Weddle ( ), Robert Marr ( ), and Graham Morey ( ). Each of us who has been Governor knows that without the support and dedicated service of officers and Board members, leadership is hollow. Personally, I have been so fortunate that the current Indiana Board also stepped up to be the Planning Committee for this General Board of Assistants Meeting. From deciding to submit the bid to hold the meeting in Indianapolis as a Centennial Celebration, to making the beautiful centerpieces and programs for this evening and Linda McGlothlin, Indiana s AG, certainly overflowed with enthusiasm. There are too many to call out individually. But if you d stand together, thank you.... As we finish our desserts, it s a good time to recognize the talents of our student musicians tonight. Julia Garrard, the pianist you heard during the reception, lives in Lebanon, IN. She is a sophomore at Lebanon High School and a descendant of Isaac Allerton and Edward Fuller. Julia spent last year studying in Germany on a full-scholarship appointment from the United States Congress, administered by the State Department. She is so accomplished I can t begin to read her resume to you. But I can say she is active in numerous school bands and choirs. Among her awards are a first place in the Indiana State Fair Youth Instrumental Talent Competition and Purdue University Jazz Festival Outstanding Player Award. Let s thank Julia! By the way, this is a very talented family. Julia s brother, Justin, won one of Indiana Society s $2,000 merit based scholarships in 2015!... To all of you, thank you for celebrating this Indiana Society milestone....

11 Page 11 Indiana Mayflower Society Past Governor Richard Gould INDIANA MAYFLOWER SOCIETY 100 YEARS Abridged notes from Presentation Sept. 9, 2016 (See Indiana Mayflower Society website for full notes) In 1894 work was begun on formation and acceptance of the Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants. In 1916 we received our charter with 35 members. The Society s records also indicate that there were no public meetings for the duration of the First World War. The next annual dinner was held at the Columbia Club in December In January 1920, the Society voted to ask school children of the State to contribute one penny each to raise Indiana s contribution to a National Fund to buy Cole s Hill and erect a memorial there. The Society ultimately donated $400 towards the $25,000 cost of the memorial The Pilgrim Tercentenary in Indiana was celebrated at the Claypool hotel in downtown Indianapolis. Governor General Leonard Wood was the guest of honor. Dinner cost $ was our first yearbook and our first celebration of Compact Sunday The silver anniversary was celebrated with the Secretary General Harold G Murray as guest speaker. The anniversary paid tribute to Honorable Joseph Allen Minturn, founder of the Indiana Society. The society published a 69 page book containing articles of historical significance, lists of Mayflower passengers, and other interesting facts about our society The society observed its 50 th Anniversary at the Propylaeum. Leonard T Grant, PhD discussed the Mayflower society and Indiana History. Dinner cost $ The General Society awarded Indiana the Norman Green Bowl for the largest percentage of net membership increase by a state society the Bicentennial and our sixtieth anniversary we published a 436 page hardback book which included the complete lineages of every person who had ever joined the Indiana society to that date. Titled Mayflower Descendants, Lineages of the Indiana Society First Society Merit Scholarships awarded. Since then we have given out over $47,500 to students for college or post-secondary education The Annual Board of Assistants meeting of the General Society was hosted by the Indiana society we donated $250 to help replace animals destroyed in a fire at Plymoth Plantation $250 was donated to Plymouth Massachusetts for outfits for the annual Pilgrims progress parade The Pilgrim in the Schools program was born. The Indiana society funded the trip to Plymoth for research, writing and costuming for historical reenactor Kevin Stonerock, who assumes the role of Steven Hopkins, while giving presentations to schools and the public around the state. The Indiana society continues to sponsor this popular program Thanks to the generous donation of one of our members, the society presented a special screening a Directors Cut of the film The Discovery of Scrooby Manor at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. British Director Jane Williams and her 70 minute documentary film, was open to the public. Williams, who directed and produced the film, followed the showing with an interesting presentation about the making of the film with a question and answer period for the audience. Our Memorial Books fund over the years has donated books to the Indiana State Library genealogical section, and contributed to the Five generations project with a book to honor each member who has died. Intrigue: At the 1941 Silver anniversary celebration a bronze time capsule put together by our members was presented to the Governor General to be opened at the 2020 celebration.?? Over the course of our first 100 years 1524 people have become members of the Indiana Society Which brings us up to today and here we are celebrating our first 100 years. In closing I would like to share a poem by Indiana author and diplomat, Meredith Nicholson who was commissioned by the Indiana society to write a fitting tribute to the Pilgrims. In 1920 he wrote: The winds of freedom filled the sails that bore the Mayflower to America. The Pilgrims sought homes in a new continent that promised larger liberty for the soul, and a hundred million free Americans are today their indebtors. In hours of perplexity or peril we do well to remember the heroic company that dared the uncharted seas to win for man a refuge from oppression and bigotry. So small a ship, and yet it bore safely the ark of the covenant of Democracy. And lastly in the words of Indiana Journalist William Herschell: Ain t God Good to Indiana!
