Indiana District February 2015 Good News As long as I can remember, I have attended church on Wednesdays during Lent. There were the beautiful, oft times heart-wrenching, hymns of Lent, the dark somber church, and the penitential purple of Lent. If you do a little research about Lent, you will discover that the ancient church began it as a time of preparation for Easter. And since those times it has grown from just a two-day observance to 36 days and eventually to 40 days. It becomes 40 days by skipping the Sundays in the count; Sundays are always celebrated as little Easters as we commemorate our Lord s Resurrection. Lent has always had a special emphasis on our Lord s suffering and death. We hear the combined Gospel accounts of what Jesus endured for each of us. I can still hear the sermons of Pastors Stein, Schmidt, and Fehrmann. For me, the Lenten story is not the same old, same old. I say that because, like all of you, I am still human and at times I drift away, and my mind wanders to something else. But both my biological family and, in the good old days, my family of faith at Good Shepherd in Evansville, always emphasized the importance of Lent and its story of Christ. Unfortunately, as with every church holiday (holy day), you will find that someone or something attempts to spoil it. The world seeks to spoil Christmas with its commercialism, and inserts an Easter bunny into the celebration of Christ s resurrection from the dead. In the same way it tries to spoil Lent. So many go from the wild parties of Mardi Gras to a kind of strict self-denial during Lent. Once Easter has come and gone, they return to the wild parties. Perhaps they believe that Lent is a time to make up for all the sins of the rest of the year by trying a more thoughtful behavior and a time of self-sacrifice. 2 WHAT IS LENT TO A LUTHERAN... CONTINUED But really, is that helpful? We miss the point that Lent is a time of spiritual power. The season of Lent gives all of us a time to concentrate on Christ crucified. That is the central message of Lent. Each Wednesday we have the opportunity to come to church and renew our faith through the personal message that Jesus suffering and death was for me. The apostle Paul wrote that the message of Christ crucified is the power of God and the wisdom of God and that the message of Christ is a demonstration of the Spirit and of power (1 Corinthians 1:24 & 2:4). This Lenten season when you hear the story of Christ s passion: don t allow it to become just a reminder of something you learned many years ago; don t allow Lent to become just a refresher course on Jesus; don t allow the passion of Christ to become a familiar story we like to hear again and again, like the stories we tell and retell to our children and grandchildren. No, the Lenten account expresses God s almighty power through the Gospel. As Lutherans we understand that God promises to work only through the Gospel. God assures us that through Word and Sacrament He works to strengthen faith, to comfort us, and to give us power to live as disciples of Jesus. God bless your Lenten journey! 3 PRESIDENT S PAGE EMILY ROGERS The Time Is Now to Make a Plan With the year of 2015 ahead of us, you have a chance to start fresh, look at the entire calendar year, and resolve to do some things differently, or at least do some things you don t usually do. Make a plan to get involved in your church, your LWML society, your community. Familiarize yourself with the list of officers and chairman found in this publication who can help you get involved. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God s grace in its various forms (1 Peter 4:10). Make a plan to get others involved with you. Invite the young woman sitting next to you in church on Sunday morning, your friend who just retired or sent a child off to college. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them (Matthew 18:20). Make a plan to attend the LWML Indiana District Retreat Go Forth in Joy featuring Annetta Dellinger, Joyologist, April 24 and 25. Registration information is in this Good News newsletter. For you shall go out with joy and be led by peace (Isaiah 55:12). Make a plan to attend the LWML Convention in Des Moines, Iowa, June 25-28, ride the bus, walk in the Mission Pledge Walk, sing in the choir, and listen to inspiring speakers and Bible Study leaders. so that in all things at all time, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8). Make a plan to organize a group of women in your church to attend the LWML Indiana District Treatshop Pray Continually Receive Thankfully August 22, at Carmel Lutheran Church. This training is not just for leaders, but all women in the church. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:5b-7). If you make a plan now, you will be able to get others involved with you, enjoy the fellowship while preparing and going together, gain new information about the LWML, grow spiritually, and share your enthusiasm with others. Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed (Proverbs 16:3). God s blessings as you begin planning! Emily Rogers LWML Indiana District President 3

ORPHAN GRAIN TRAIN BECKY THIBODEAU Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God (Hebrews 13:16). When we give our mites, we sacrifice. When we share what we have, we please God. We have done that for the Orphan Grain Train. Orphan Grain Train is a national organization that gathers food, clothing, and household goods for those in need locally and around the world. Our Indiana District Orphan Grain Train is located in Elizabethtown, Indiana. Currently, they are working toward moving to a new and improved location. As they have been working out of many storage trailers, this location will provide a better place to sort and store their items. Our LWML Indiana District is helping to do that with our $12,000 grant. Our mites are providing the funds to repair and maintain current equipment and to purchase needed equipment to help with the move and with transporting goods to those in need. On December 10, 2014, Emily Rogers and Becky Thibodeau presented the grant to Orphan Grain Train at St. Paul Lutheran Church (Clifty) in Columbus. Gene Ernst, acting manager of the Seymour Branch, and all of the Orphan Grain Train board were present. After the presentation, past manager Gene Wint was given a special honor, the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash award. This award is of the highest distinction in Indiana to be awarded by the governor. The Sagamore of the Wabash was a term used by Native American tribes of Indiana to describe a lesser chief or a great man among the tribe whom the chief consulted for wisdom and advice. What a blessing it is to be able to present these grants that are made possible by our mites! If you would like to donate to Orphan Grain Train or serve there, they welcome individuals or groups who wish to volunteer to work, sort, etc. Please call Gene Ernst at , or indianaogt@gmail.com to make arrangements Our mites do great work! To help you spread the word and to encourage ladies to remember to fill their mite boxes, there are a few resources for you to access from the LWML Indiana District webpage ( PowerPoint presentations are posted on the mission grant chart. Video summary of the grants are on the bottom left corner of the home page. Placemats can be printed and displayed. These are soon to be located on the mission grants page as well. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19a) 4

CHRISTIAN LIFE SARA KORTE Our Clouds... God s Grace Driving home recently one evening, I noticed the beautiful sunset. I looked at the pinks, blues and purples reflected in the clouds as the sun was shining through. Those colorful clouds with the sun behind them put my mind to considering how similar that sunset was to life. We all experience clouds on this side of heaven. We can name those clouds: disease, cancer, divorce, warfare, poverty... We all have our own list. We also know that these clouds are a result of sin. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 4:16 that our outer self is wasting away. Yet, that sunset was beautiful. Why? The sun was providing the colors for the clouds. The sun is God s grace providing peace and comfort in the midst of our temporary clouds in life. Jesus words to Paul about Paul s clouds are to us as well. My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Therefore, let us be content with our clouds as they provide the canvas to show God s grace in our lives. LEADER DEVELOPMENT LIBBY MOELLER What makes a leader?... Don t leaders have special qualities that define them?.... I m not a leader... I don t have what it takes to become one.... Are these thoughts ones that you ve had yourself? When I was asked to join the Leader Development Committee, I was floored. I don t necessarily see myself as a leader. In fact, until recently I wouldn t have classified myself a leader at all. For many years, I was incredibly shy, and although that has gradually changed, I would never have dreamed of being in a leadership position. My journey to leadership began quite accidentally a few years ago. I attended an LWML zone rally, and I was hooked. I became passionate about the LWML and wanted to find ways to be involved on a regular basis. However, my congregation s LWML had not been active for many years, so in order for me to pursue this, I would have to start a new society. With prayer and my pastor s support, I planned a presentation, talked to some women at my church, and held an interest session after church. Although that first meeting only yielded two attendees, we worked hard to glorify God and attract other women through our missions, and today the society is going strong. It is still humbling to realize that others actually view me as a leader. I tell you all of this not to establish my credentials. In fact, quite the opposite. I m sharing this to prove that if I can do it, so can you! Leadership, more than anything, takes passion and determination. However, there are definitely some qualities and techniques that make a leader more successful. Here are a few tips that I ve learned along the way. Hopefully they will be helpful in your leadership journey. Begin with prayer. Remember, your service is most of all for God. If you ask Him to guide you, your tasks will be infinitely easier. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:3) Relationship building is key! Women are more likely to want to become involved if they have a personal relationship with someone in the society first. Make your invitations personal, and always be sincere. Be organized. Meetings go much more smoothly if well planned out, and so do events. When you re hosting a gathering, the last thing you want to worry about is whether you remembered to bring the dinner plates! Encourage your volunteers. Remember, they are giving of their time, just like you are. If they feel appreciated, they are more likely to want to continue. Remember the reason for your work. It s easy to get overwhelmed and lose sight of the true focus. As women of the LWML, our mission in everything we do should be to assist each woman of the LCMS in affirming her relationship with the Triune God so that she is enabled to use her gifts in ministry. Ultimately, everything we do should be with this goal in mind, to give glory to God! 8

NOW IS THE TIME TO SERVE ALICE FARLEY CALLING ALL LADIES Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God s grace in its various forms. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ (1 Peter 4:10-11). The Nominating Committee will begin to visit zone spring rallies or contact zones for names of ladies who have a willing heart to serve the Lord through the LWML Indiana District. We are looking forward to this task of putting names together for a slate for our convention next year. We will be looking for nominees for the offices of» Vice President Mission Grants» Vice President Conventions» Recording Secretary» Treasurer» a Nominating Committee If you know of anyone who would be willing to serve or if you personally are interested, please contact Alice Farley at or dbfarley4222@sbcglobal.net QUARTERLY INFORMATION TRISHA LETTERMAN Here are some Quarterly ordering tidbits that might help you and your society in the future. I send out statements to each society sometime in late January or early February. These must be returned to me by the end of February. All Quarterly orders are sent by me to the LWML office in St. Louis by April 1. If your society does not respond, then your Quarterly order will be the same as the previous year. If your society would like to receive their statement by or by another address other than their church s address, please contact me at trisha@tldarm.org or call me at (812) (Please leave a message.) Remember, societies can only increase throughout the year, not decrease. Please feel free to contact me at any time, Trisha Letterman 9

RETREAT INGATHERING SUE FRISCHIE Sharing God's Love with the People of Haiti The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod is alive and well in Haiti, working to support the ELCH (Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti). Of particular interest is the New Lutheran School in Leogane, a seaside port community about 18 miles west of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. It was built by members of Trinity,Vallonia and other Lutheran churches in Jackson County, Indiana. When Leogane was at the epicenter of the January 12, 2010 earthquake, 80-90% of its buildings were damaged or destroyed. The building structure has been completed, with some wall finishing and painting still to be done. The school opened in November 2014, with 50 students in kindergarten to grade 3 and plans to add a grade per year, up to grade 6, for a total of 200 students. To help this become a reality, an INGATHERING will be held at the LWML Indiana District Retreat, April 24-25, with the opportunity to donate toward: 1. Pastor and teacher salaries: Pastor Williams serves as both pastor and teacher; needed is $550/month for his salary. He has a wife and 2 children. Four each = $664/month 2. Benches, desks, paint and other supplies, $5, Adopt-a-Student: tuition for 1 student is $20/month or $200/year. Lunch is included. 4. Most pressing need. Please prayerfully consider a need listed above that you would like to address and write your check payable to Trinity Lutheran Church-Vallonia. Note on the memo line where your check should be directed: Pastor or teacher salaries, school equipment, Adopt-a-Student, Most pressing need.
