Box 1404 Mason, TX Cell: arcwade@gmail.com Open Hearts Open Minds Open Doors Newsletter Editor: Jan Appleby janell@ctesc.net HISTORY OF MOTHER S DAY ~ Did You Know This? Meet the Methodist mother and daughter team who worked to create a day to honor a mother's love and to emphasize how important a mother's role is in building a peaceful world. (See the note on pg. 2 about Mother s Day, 2015). When Ann Reeves Jarvis was working to establish Mother s Day as a national event, and when her daughter picked up the mantle from her, they were not thinking about greeting cards and flowers. Instead, the Methodist women who invented the idea in America wanted to honor mothers in a deeper way. They were thinking about the work of women and the significant testimony that women could give about the need for peace. Ann Jarvis organized women s clubs in the 1860s to serve suffering mothers and children. Women came together with their sisters in their locations to respond to the needs that they could see. For Ann, she was in a coal mining part of what is now W. Virginia and she could see the needs of women and children in that area. She could see the effect of the economy of her day on the people that she cared for most directly. She talked to them about hydration for fevered babies, about sanitation and nutrition. And then the Civil War came along and they put a field hospital right outside Grafton. Ann recruited nurses for military hospitals, and after the war formed friendship clubs to promote reconciliation. She was convinced that mothers, women, but especially mothers, had to work for peace because they could see the ravages of war in their husbands and in their sons, in a way that was so focused and so clear that their voices would be powerful. And that s what s at the genesis of the current Mother s Day. Faith was always foremost. When she was older, Ann Jarvis and her daughter Anna became members of Philadelphia s St. George s Methodist Episcopal Church. Anna became a Sunday school teacher at St. George s. But, she s best known for the efforts she made to get Mother s Day recognized as a national observance. She and John Wanamaker, who was a famous retailer here, are the ones that got Woodrow Wilson to sign the petition (in 1914). Ann Jarvis died in 1905, before an official holiday was in place. But her daughter Anna (who was never a mother herself) stayed true to the purpose of the celebration. She envisioned Mother s Day as a time to write a personal letter to your mother, a time to send her an inexpensive carnation (a flower in which the petals hold tight like a mother s love) and a time to visit or attend church together. She later became an outspoken critic when the special day turned too commercial. In May 1908, Anna Jarvis organized the first official Mother s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. There was also a Mother s Day event at one of Wanamaker s retail stores in Philadelphia on the same day. (see Note on P. 2 for 2015 Mother s Day) 1

MASON COUNTY CANCER BENEFIT HEROS FOR HOPE The Mason County Cancer Benefit, Heros for Hope was held on Saturday, April 25th from 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. As you can see in these photos, there was lots of fun to be had at the Mason County Cancer Benefit on April 25th. The Photo Booth was lots of fun! Can you figure out who the folks are in the silly hats (and beard)? 7
MEXICAN PILE-ON DINNER A Mexican pile-on lunch was served on Sunday, April 19th following the Worship Service to raise money for the Hildas Hope Team. All proceeds go towards helping cancer patients in the Mason County area. This is the 8th year that Hildas Hope has had a team! Pastor Wade donated a beautiful painting of Beaver Creek to be raffled off to raise money for the Hildas Hope Mason County Cancer Benefit Team. The winner was Janie Jaquez and $ was raised with the raffle ticket sales. THANKS Wade!! HILDA CANCER SURVIVOR PHOTOS Our little brown church in the wildwood has certainly had more than its shard of folks having to deal with cancer over the past years! Unfortunately we have lost quite a few to this disease, but we are so proud and profoundly grateful for those who have survived and flourished and have helped others cope with this disease. Photos: beginning at top, L-T: Nanci Gibbons, Lee Roy Loeffler, Teresa Walker, Veleda Boyd, Florence Smith, Don Daniel, and Pat Tucker (with Jayce Witt and caretaker Weldon Tucker). We are also so thankful for all the wonderful caretakers who have been there for those fighting this disease! 8

PALM SUNDAY March 29, 2015 ********************************************************************************************************** HILDAS HOPE TEAM REPORT Hilda's Hope raised $ overall. $ was raised at the Mexican Pile On luncheon that was spearheaded by the Henrich's. We were glad to have folks come over from Doss to join us. A nice touch was the flower and plant arrangements that were left by the Doells after the reception they held in the Fellowship Hall a couple of days before. Heritage Park was the setting, once again, for the Mason County Cancer Benefit. April 25th was clear and sunny, with a nice breeze. The day started off with a Survivor Lap around the track, followed by one more lap when they were joined by caregivers and others who care about them. The rest of the day was filled with games, music, food, and general good times, ending at dusk with a tribute to survivors, and those who have passed, with the hope that someday soon we can find a cure for this disease. Wade Powell graciously donated an original oil painting of Beaver Creek. The raffle from that piece brought about $ Janie Jaquez, a Mason resident, and cancer survivor, was the winner of the painting. Hilda's Hope came in 4th out of the 9 teams represented. The overall total raised is close to $30,000!!! This is a tremendous show of support in our community. All money raised stays in the community to help individuals and families with some of the costs involved in dealing with cancer. A big thank you to everyone who contributed in any way to this year's efforts!! We couldn't have done it without you!!! Thanks, Suzanne Bjork 11
Billie Jean? Genie in a bottle? Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair? I Dream of Jeannie? NO!! It is Blue Jean Summer!! Hilda church members and friends are encouraged to wear jeans and dress casually this summer. There will be good fellowship, good music and good worship every Sunday so, encourage your friends and families to come as they are and join us during June, July and August! THE WAY The Adult Sunday School class (10:00 a.m. every Sunday) has begun a study of Adam Hamilton s book The Way. The study guides us through the 3 years of Jesus ministry. We will listen to Jesus teach, watch him perform miracles and spend time with his somewhat questionable friends. We will be challenged to make a greater commitment to Jesus and to be better disciples of Christ in today s world. Class members are encouraged to express their opinions during the discussion, and you don t have to be there every Sunday to participate. It is absolutely fine to come in late if you get a slow start on Sunday morning. For more information, contact Nanci Gibbons at or ngibbons@bcfs.net. SUMMER MUSIC Please take time to sign up (on a clip board on the piano in the sanctuary) to present special music on a Sunday this summer. Sign up individually or as a group and enhance the worship experience while the choir takes a summer break. BRING A FRIEND - MAKE A FRIEND Sunday, May 17, 2015, is the first of several Bring a Friend Make a Friend monthly luncheons immediately after church. Sponsored by the Adult Sunday School Class and coordinated by Larry and Dian Willmann, this month s meal will feature hamburgers with all the fixins by Randall Brown. Bring a friend, stay for lunch and visit with someone you don t know well yet. Stay tuned for upcoming luncheons during June, July and August, and let Wade Powell, Dian Willmann or Nanci Gibbons know if you or your group are interested in sponsoring one of these luncheons. 12
