1 Volume 108, Issue 7 August Simon Peter did not know what to say. He had seen a lot of strange and amazing things in the last couple of years multitudes fed from a child s picnic basket, lepers cleansed, the blind given their sight, a man walking on water (Peter had done it himself, albeit briefly!), even the dead restored to life yet nothing had prepared him for this! Now Simon Peter was gazing directly into Heaven! Or had Heaven come down to earth? Words failed the apostle. But one thing he knew for certain: this moment must be made to last. Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. If the greatest saints in the history of Israel have come down to earth and are walking among us, we should make sure they stay right here. We could use their help! That, of course, was not to be. A voice from the heavenly cloud made clear the point of this miraculous sign: This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him! Once again Peter had gotten it wrong. Instead of clutching at heavenly things that were beyond his grasp, he should have been utterly attentive to the One who came down from Heaven, the One with whom he had been traveling for almost three years. The dazzling whiteness that now engulfed his Lord and Master on the mountain top should have reminded Peter of something Jesus had already told him: He whom God has sent utters the words of God (John 3:34a). Heaven had already come down to abide on earth with the Incarnation of God s only-begotten Son. Peter had best focus his attention on the Word-madeflesh and His unalterable Good News for mankind, and not on a single, transient event no matter how astonishing that event might be! The Transfiguration of Jesus (Matt 17:1-13; Mark 9:2-13; Luke 9:28-36), therefore, reminds us to maintain a single-minded focus on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And yet Peter s instinctive response to the transformation of His Master and the ethereal visit of Elijah and Moses also reminds us of another important truth: Despite appearances the veil between this world and the next is as thin as tissue paper. In fact, the presence of those two Old Testament saints on the mountain top reminds us that a few people have already uniquely crossed the barrier between the worlds of flesh and spirit. For Elijah had been swept up into Heaven in God s fiery chariot while he was still alive (2 Kings 2:9-12). And there are hints in Scripture that the body of Moses may have been miraculously assumed into Heaven shortly after his death (Deut 34:6b; Jude 9). Similarly early Christian tradition holds that the Virgin Mary was also bod- (Continued on page 2) Sunday Schedule Morning Prayer... 7:05am Holy Eucharist...7:30am Choral Eucharist... 9:00am Christian Education... 10:15am Holy Eucharist... 11:15am Evening Prayer.6:00pm Evensong is offered on select Sunday evenings at 6:00pm Morning Prayer Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday :00am Wednesday & Saturday.... 8:40am Holy Eucharist Monday, Friday :00pm Tuesday...6:30am Wednesday :00am Thursday... 7:00pm Saturday.... 9:00am Weekday Schedule Evening Prayer Daily (except Thursday).....5:00pm Thursday :40pm Confession Saturdays at 8:00a.m.-8:30a.m. (or by appointment) All weekday services take place in St. Mary s Chapel St. Vincent s uses the 1979 Book of Common Prayer as its standard form of worship A Monthly Publication of St. Vincent s Cathedral

Thus in some mysterious fashion a few of the Lord s great servants already share in the delights of the resurrection life that all the faithful people of God will one day enjoy. But the fellowship of Heaven is not limited to those few who have been miraculously taken up from this world. When we affirm in the Creed that we believe in the communion of saints we are proclaiming that God s people still on earth and those already in Heaven remain united in Him. Mere physical death does not sever the bond between those who have become a new creation in Christ Jesus. The dazzling white cloud that enveloped the top of Mount Tabor so long ago is a symbol of that unbroken communion. And when we gather around Christ s Holy Table in the Eucharist we lift up our hearts to the mountain top and join angels, and archangels, and all the company of Heaven in singing praises to the Holy One. In this way we are all being transfigured, conformed more and more, day by day to the image of Christ. And one glorious day we, too, will shine whiter than snow and speak face to face with the giants of the Faith! The feast of the Transfiguration will be celebrated this year on Wednesday, August 6 th. I urge you to consider joining us for Mass that morning in St. Mary s Chapel at 9AM. But if you are unable to join us, please take a moment in your prayers to give thanks for the communion of saints and the unchanging, saving Word of the Living God. May God s peace be with you all. 4 Volume 108, Issue 7 Page 4 Summer Mission Team Trip to New Orleans On Sunday, July 6, nineteen members of St. Vincent s left on a new mission adventure to New Orleans. The group included: Rick, Beth and Mary Ward; Barbara, Dean, Alex and Janice Hautanen; Jas and Megan Kirkwood; John, John and Liza Donor; Larry and Caroline Underwood; Elissa and Scott Polley; Stephen Thompson; Josh Jeffers; and Daniel Fry. For the past 10 years, St. Vincent s has been a part of developing and growing a relationship with La Gran Familia orphanage in Cuauhtemoc, Mexico. However, due to travel advisories in the state of Chihuahua it was decided that a trip to Mexico was not appropriate this summer. For many of us who have come to love La Gran Familia and the children we meet each summer, this was a very difficult time. But because Christ has called us to go out into all parts of the world, it was felt by Dean Reed and the leaders of the trip that we should seek out an alternative trip for this summer. With the help of contacts in the mission community, Barbara Hautanen was able to locate a group in New Orleans that was coordinating mission groups to help rebuild the city and work with the people still in need there. Resurrection House is an organization started by Deacon Milton Gibson and his wife Beth in response to the great need to rebuild, restore, and renew the city of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in According to Dn. Milton: 90,000 homes in New Orleans need to be rebuilt or repaired, and people are struggling to rebuild their homes by themselves. Even three years after a flood that inundated 80% of the city, it is apparent that the rebuilding efforts must be supplemented by faith-based and volunteer groups- or New Orleans cannot and will not rebound. The goal of Resurrection House is to use skilled and unskilled workers, and donated and recycled materials to rebuild 2-4 homes per month for the next 5-10 years. Although their main emphasis is coordinating rebuilding jobs, Resurrection House assists all types of mission groups to use their talents to help the people of New Orleans. Since we had a younger group, with 10 children aged 10-17, it was felt that we would be better suited to assist with a bible camp at a local mission and to work at a local animal rescue center. So we left that Sunday on a new adventure full of excitement, but yet uncertain about what we would be doing. In any mission trip you must be flexible because at any moment your itinerary can change. While preparing to go to New Orleans, Beth Gibson told us that being flexible was too stiff and that we needed to be fluid. That advice turned out to be accurate, as our plans changed multiple times every day. However, once things got settled, we were going to be doing VBS at the Broad Street Mission in central New Orleans in the morning and afternoon while working Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO) on the west side of New Orleans in the evening. Although many of our group were experts in implementing a VBS, having done so at St. Vincent s and in Mexico, we all found significant challenges in working with 35 inner city New Orleans youth. After a very frustrating first day, we regrouped and by the end of the week more than a few of the kids got what we were trying to get across. Despite their difficult circumstances, many of the New Orleans kids we met have a deep faith and tremendous biblical knowledge. The afternoons at ARNO were only slightly less challenging with many dogs to walk, cages to clean and cats to be taken care of. ARNO is an amazing organization that has helped thousands of animals since Katrina- all with a volunteer staff. Although many of us began the trip with disappointment from not being able to go to Mexico and with uncertainty over what we would be doing in New Orleans, we all returned with renewed faith that God is working through some amazingly dedicated and Prayer time at VBS at the Broad Street Mission faithful people to rebuild the city of New Orleans and to give hope to the people that are still there. When you meet these people and work with the innocent children and animals, the argument over why rebuild a city that is mostly below sea level becomes inconsequential. God calls all of us to reach out to those in need, and as it is stated in James 1:27- Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained from the world. This trip to New Orleans was a powerful spiritual experience for most of us, and the consensus is that God led us to New Orleans this year because it is time for St. Vincent s to step up our mission activity. We have begun initial discussions on the possibility of multiple mission trips next summer. We invite all of your prayers and insight as the next year progresses to discern what God wants the mission life of St. Vincent s to become, so that we can: Make Jesus Christ known in all that we do.
