3 HISTORICAL SKETCH The William B. Burford Mutual Relief Association was organized by the employees of the printing business in 1887 in order to pool together funds to care for members who were sick or injured, as well as for funeral expenses and social gatherings. 4 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This is a composite photogravure that was transferred onto silk. The composite features a portrait of William B. Burford, the owner of the company, A.W. Applegate, the president of the association, as well as all the members of the association. At the time the photogravure was created, the association had a membership of 162, who together contributed eleven hundred dollars to the association s treasury.
