2 Page 2 FROM THE PASTOR It seems like yesterday we were celebrating the joy of Christmas. In our worship series we considered the gift of love that is God making our home God s home. Now the season of lent draws near and I invite you into a new worship series; REHAB Rehab is a word that can refer to many different things. Just a quick glance through the Wikipedia article on rehabilitation, or rehab, points to issues ranging from health (physical, occupational, addiction, vocational) to home improvement (Rehab Addict!). In general, the word rehabilitate means to restore to a condition of good health, ability to work; to restore to good condition or operation; or to restore a person s reputation. Similarly, the annual observance of the Lenten discipline among Christians is a time to seek restoration for our lives. It is a time to reflect, take stock of our spiritual condition, and realign our lives. We enter the season through the Ash Wednesday call; in the name of the church, to observe a holy Lent: by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God s Holy Word As we contemplate the method of Lent, even the spiritually mature among us become aware of how out of step we are with where we are called to be. We all have work to do. The core of the learning in rehab, like the core of the learning in Lent, is behavioral. Learning how to live differently, to set a new normal for ourselves and our relationships after a period of time or perhaps a crisis has made it clear to us it is impossible to live as we had before. Likewise in Lent, we focus on helping those coming to faith in Christ for the first time, as well as those making their way back to Christ and the fellowship of the church after a period of absence or neglect, primarily in concrete, behavioral ways. Our goal for all who engage this period of time is that the way of Jesus becomes either the new normal, or, for those who have been consistent in the journey over time, is strengthened. Our journey begins on Ash Wednesday by recognizing the limits placed on us by our mortality and the depths of our sinfulness. Through the following weeks we acknowledge we are entering a wilderness, uncharted and perhaps unchartable territory for us. We become aware of the degree to which we need intervention and help beyond ourselves, and we identify how we can access it and start doing so. As we continue, we encounter the specifics of the kind of program that can keep us moving forward and learning this new normal, if we stick with it. Soon it will be time to address the sense of progress (and lack of progress) that comes with beginning to make some recovery. Strength will come as we remember with gratitude and hope the promise of healing and wholeness that awaits us as we continue to persevere, even in the face of challenging circumstances. Finally, with that sense of gratitude and hope of a journey well-begun we enter Holy Week. All of what has come before has prepared us to walk through this final leg of the journey with Christ and his church, through his suffering, execution, death, burial and finally, after all of that, his resurrection. May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ guide and sustain us in our journey. Jeff

4 Page 3 THE HURRICANE MATTHEW RELIEF PROJECT This year the United Methodist Women and the Mission Committee wanted to adopt a mission project that would benefit communities in our state. Learning that eastern North Carolina counties, especially Cumberland, Edgecombe and Robeson Counties, are continuing to suffer from the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, it was decided to sell chicken pies to raise money to support the families of these communities who are in need. Money collected will go directly to the United Methodist North Carolina Conference Disaster Relief Fund. Last year the Long Memorial congregation greatly supported the Imagine No Malaria mission. We know our church will be generous in support of this Hurricane Matthew Project. 8 PRESCHOOL NEWS I command you to love each other. John 15:17 Page 7 February is a favorite month at Long Memorial. It is also a SPECIAL month during which we focus on God s LOVE for eachof us and our LOVE for HIM, our families, friends, and country. In the classrooms, the children will share their thoughts on LOVE, while busy little hands will cut, lace, stamp, paste, and paint Special Valentines, including ones for The Roxboro Nursing Home that will be delivered to our older friends. Dictionaries define love in a number of different ways. The most perfect definition I have read, however, comes from the New Testament, 1 st Corinthians, Chapter 13:1-8. Love is patient and kind Love is not jealous or boastful Love is not arrogant or rude Love does not insist on having its own way Love is not irritable or resentful Love does not rejoice at wrong Love rejoices in the right Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things Love never ends. Parent Night Conferences Monday, February 12th beginning at 5:00 P.M. ENROLLMENT TIME Applications for the Preschool Year will be mailed out in March/April. Church Members have first preference. Please call Pam Day at the church office if you are interested in enrolling your child in preschool. Spaces fill up fast. So, call early. If you know of others who may be interested please spread the word and get on the list Daybunch4@esinc.net
