Samuelson Physical and Mental growth for human beings resembles a Bell Curve. We ascend to a peak and then the descent starts. Parents of little ones quietly whisper please don t knock her over, when their child is with other children. Soon that whisper becomes please don t knock anyone over. At some point in our adult lives we begin to forget things or we have less interest in new information or new methods. Spiritual growth is different though. It is always ascending, even when other parts of our existence are on the decline. Of course there are ups and downs if we monitor our position from day to day. To use an economic term, sometimes we are increasing at an increasing rate and sometimes we are increasing at a decreasing rate, but over the years we continue to grow spiritually. John 15: 1 says, I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit He prunes to make it bear more fruit. The believers are the fruit bearing branches and we are pruned to bear more fruit. This is an ongoing process. God is forever drawing us in deeper. He always has more to reveal to us. We realize that our life on earth is a journey into eternity and not just a quest in and of itself. Many of us are on the other side of the Bell Curve but we re still going up. Pastor Gary

Samuelson Morning Program 2 1/2 3 1/2 Monday Thursday 9AM 11:30AM 4 Day Program 4-Year-Olds Monday Thursday 12:30PM 3:00PM We are ready for the May flowers after April s showers! The children are enjoying the spring weather, noticing how God s world is changing and blooming. We are eager to spend more time outdoors on our playground and taking neighborhood walks. We will be having an Open House on Saturday, May 19th from 1-3pm. Caterpillars and ladybug larvae have arrived and are growing by leaps and bounds on a daily basis. We will witness the metamorphosis process and look forward to butterflies and ladybugs. It s always an exciting time as we watch the butterflies hatch from their chrysalises and then release them in our garden. Later this month, we will be learning about all kinds of animals and their habitats. We will be sorting and learning about jungle, forest, farm, and pet animals. Our annual school trip to the Staten Island Zoo is scheduled for Thursday, May 24th. This is always a special day for all of our classes and families. Our afternoon class will host a Mother s Day Tea on Thursday, May 10th. The children will be very busy preparing a wonderful day for their moms, with songs and some special treats! We are still accepting registrations for the next school year and will be having another Open House on Saturday, May 19th from 1-3pm. Please pass the word. Men s Breakfast This month s LMM Men s Breakfast will be held on Saturday, May 5th at 8am. Car Wash Fundraiser Sunday, May 6th, our youth group will be a car wash here at Cross of Glory during the 10:30 service to raise funds for the annual youth retreat at Crossroads Camp and Retreat Center. The suggested donation is $10 Contact Information In an attempt to update our church directory, we are looking to add cell phone numbers as part of the contact information. If you would like to provide a cell phone number to your directory listing, please contact the church office. NS Open House Our Nursery School will be holding an Open House on Saturday, May 19th from 1-3pm. If you or someone you know is interested in enrolling a child in the program for the school year, please see Janet Kain. Wurffel Fund A limited amount of financial aid for Lutheran college students is available through the Karl, John, Elizabeth Wurffel Memorial Fund. The aid will be provided in the form of student loans; however, the terms for the loans will be very beneficial for the recipients. If you are interested in receiving an application, please contact the church office.

Bartholomew Bishop This year marks 25 years since the ELCA passed the Caring for Creation: Vision, Hope and Justice social statement, which was adopted by a more than two-thirds majority vote as a social statement of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America by the third Churchwide Assembly on August 28, 1993, at Kansas City, Missouri. In honor of Earth Day- an annual event celebrated on April 22 nd, first celebrated in 1970 and now celebrated in more than 193 countries- why not familiarize or reacquaint yourself with the social statement? The Caring for Creation: Vision, Hope and Justice social statement explains the ELCA s teachings on ecology and the environment, grounded in a biblical vision of God's intention for the healing and wholeness of creation. This statement provides a Christian understanding of the human role to serve in creation, and a hope rooted in God s faithfulness to the creation from which humans emerge and depend upon for sustaining life. Social-Statements/Caring-for-Creation Wednesdays Away May 2 and June 6 Join us for Wednesdays Away, a time of spiritual renewal on the first Wednesday of the month, from 9:00am to 3:00pm in the Christ Center. Our time together begins in community with prayer and conversation, which will be used to ground your day and guide your personal retreat time. A spiritual director will also be available throughout the day for oneon-one conversation, prayer, and spiritual companionship. The cost is $50 and includes lunch.
