2 , m ^Remembering ^Freddie Mrs. Freddie Philura Polean Jackson - the devoted wife of Dea con Payne Jackson, the loving daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Richardson (Carrie Virginia Russell) Polean, the devoted friend of Mrs. Mattie Gardner, the "adopted mother" of Rev. Ethoin Ro<we, the guard tan godmother to many, and a neighbor to the community - lived a life full of faith with service and love. A native of Augusta, Georgia, Mrs. Jackson received her early education from the Mauge Street and Gwinnett Street schools of the city. She graduated from Paine High School in 1930 and from Paine College in Additionally, she studied at Atlanta University and Indiana University. Mrs. Jackson s initial professional experience was brief. She taught high school home economics in Douglas, GA for six weeks until she became ill. She never forgot and often spoke of students carrying her to class as she became crippkd. After her recuperation she returned to her dear alma mater for elementary certification and then served two years as a third grade teacher at Central School in North Augusta, SC. Later, she taught home economics in Washington, GA, where she met her fu ture husband. PJ and Freddie wed on December 25, In 1944, Mrs. Jackson answered the call from President Peters to return to Paine Colkge as a part of the faculty and staff. She served at Paine until 1 975, at first as an Instructor in the Department of Elementary Education and then as a Dietitian. Mother Jackson was baptized at Tabernacle Baptist Church in June She was a loyal member who served Tabernacle tirekssly. As a youth, she served on the Usher Board and the Junior Mission. Having become a seasoned Christian servant, she was named a Tabernacle Mother of the Church in 1999 by Pastor Otis B. Moss, III. Through the years Mother Jackson served as teacher and spiritual mentor in the Sunday School. To know the work of the Red Rose Auxiliary was to know of her. She served as the Red Rose president for 10 years and its vice-president for five years. She was a founding member and the first president of the service auxiliary, Gideon s Army. Until recent years, if there was food being prepared at the church, she had some part in the making. She enjoyed the church fellowship of other birthday celebrants in the June Birth Month Club. Mother Freddie and Mr. Payne were constant in prayer. They most often opened and closed the doors of Tabernacle s Tuesday night prayer meeting. She served as Tabernacle s representative to the Downtown Cooperative Church Ministries and for many years served on its board. As a member of Church Women United, she was co-editor of the newsletter for five years and served on the Prayer of the Least Coin Committee. Over the years, Mother Jackson, served faithfully and en thusiastically on many church committees where godly wisdom and Chris tian effort were the need. Mrs. Jackson shared her seemingly boundless energy freely with the community. She was a member of the Y.W.C.A. She was a charter member and a two-term president for the Augusta Chapter of the Na tional Association of University Women. She served on the Board of Di rectors of Open Door Kindergarten and she was a member of the League of Women Voters. Mrs. Jackson was a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. The Delta Alpha Sigma Chapter established the Freddie P. Jackson Endowment Fund at Paine College in her honor.

3 Mrs. Jackson was often recognized for her faithful and dedicated service to the community. She never boasted of any of this, but that each was an honor was evident to any visitor who wished to examine the stacks of papers and other memorabilia in her home. She kept every plaque, certificate, token, etc. given to her. She would tell anyone who inquired not to touch; She would find whatever was needed. She would find it (sooner or later). Mrs. Jackson "adopted" many children. Her sphere enlarged as her "children" married and had children of their own. Ricardo Gino Daggett, Au gusta; Rev. H. Franklin Harris,II, San Antonio, TX; Joi Patrice Jones, Au gusta; Max E. Stokes, II, Augusta; Kameshia Dean Stokes Thomas, Atlanta and Victoria Turner Whitfield, Atlanta are god children. These dear ones and their children and her other children are benefits of her legacy. This is God s blessing to them. Rev. Ethoin Rowe "adopted" Mother Jackson as his own. This was God s blessing to her. No son could show more love to his mother than he shared with his Mother Freddie. Other survivors are include: Elizabeth Tate, Carrie Wimberly, Pinkie Mae McKie, cousins. Mother Jackson was a prolific talker. When her words became few; she continued to share these words, "Just pray, it will be alright." then, she only said, "Just pray." Through it all, Mr. Payne responded, "Just Right!"
