3 The Purpose The purpose of the Guardian Angel Award is to recognize Tiger Cubs for advancement in Religious knowledge and Spiritual formation as they try to develop a spiritual knowledge of how God protects them in every area of their lives. The presentation of this award should be made in the parish; either at a Mass, a Pack Meeting or some other special ceremony. An additional recognition is made at the annual Scout Mass held on the first week-end of May each year. Who is eligible? This award is primarily for registered Tiger Cubs of the Catholic faith. Scouts of other faiths are not prohibited from working this book but should know that all faiths have religious awards available to them. LOCAL COUNCIL MEDAL Please note this is a local award. It is available only through the Southeast Louisiana Council and the archdiocese of New Orleans. Please feel free to copy this booklet as needed. 5 I. I AM SPECIAL You are a very special person. You are special because you are different from every other person in the world. You may have the same first name as one of your friends and the same birthday as another; but from the very beginning there were things that happened in your life that set you apart as someone special. A. 7 C. Have a parent, guardian or grandparent tell you about the day you were born. What was special about that day? How did they feel about you? What were their first words when they saw you? Grown-up may write this for you. 7

8 II. I AM SPECIAL TO GOD You are special to God because He created you. He made you to be a very special person. He gave you a family. God knows your family and you family name. When you were baptized, you joined the Church, which is the family of God. You received a special name at that time. Now you are part of the Christian family, too. A. Many children are given the name of a Saint at their baptism with the hope that this special Saint will be a protector and guide of the child throughout his life. Find out if you were named for a special Saint. If you were, have someone read or tell you about his life. Write the day your Saint s name is celebrated. This is your feast day or name day. If you were not named for a special Saint, ask someone to read or tell you the story of the life of a saint that you are interested in. Tell why the Saint you were named after, or the one you read about is special. 11

12 III. MY SPECIAL GIFT FROM GOD Because you are special, God watches over you every moment of your life and protects you. No matter where you are or what you are doing. He has provided special protection just for you. God put you in a family. They take care of you and look after you. A. PASTE OR DRAW A PICTURE OF YOUR FAMILY BELOW God gave you a conscience. This helps you tell the difference between right and wrong. It helps you choose to do what is right, try to stay away from what is wrong, and say I m sorry when you do something wrong. 12

13 B. God has also given you a Guardian Angel to watch over and protect you. The feast of the Guardian Angels is October 2 nd. Have your parent or guardian read you the prayer on this page and discuss it with you. Learn the prayer by heart. Say it every day. PRAYER TO MY GUARDIAN ANGEL Angel of God My Guardian dear To whom God s love Commits me here Ever this day Be at my side To light and guard To rule and guide. Amen. 13

15 D. Write a thank you note to God for all that He has given you for all the ways that He protects you. (This can be written by the child or the parent.) 15

16 IV. HOW I VE GROWN Thanks to the many ways that God has protected me since I was a baby, I have grown a lot. Look at me now! Today s date I am years old. I weight pounds. I am feet, inches tall. Trace your hand or put a picture of yourself in the space below. 16
