2 Grande Directeur of Nurses Training Angie L. Anderson 4583 Intervale Ct., Virginia Beach VA Cell: (757) <angieleeanderson@yahoo.com> Greetings Grand du Virginia! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Each year we have three primary objectives in mind: Fund raisers through soliciting and receiving monetary donations or from various organization merchandise approved by the National Committee. We will encourage consolidation and nurse training Petite communique reports from our Grande and Voiture Locales. In turn, each Voiture Locale within our Grande to promote pin distribution and donations; and To encourage every Locale to report the details of their nurse training accomplishments during the current year. Don t forget to review and promote our Nurses Training Scholarship Program. Our scholarships are the critical difference that allows recipients to pursue their studies and go on to receive a nursing degree. We still have some 2019 Nurses Training Pins to get out into our community so feel free to or call to receive your now! See you in 2019 and at the Winter Cheminot! Angie Anderson YOUTH SPORTS GRANDE DU VIRGINIA Jim Rovinski, jerovinski@hotmail.com (804) I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Well, I still have 40 youth sports pins left to sell. Voiture Locale 1530 bought 25 Pins and Voiture Locale 380 got 10 pins and I received check from Grand Chef Randy for them. Would like for all Locales to get with any youth organization in their area to see if they need help. If the Locale submits the paper work and we submit to Nationale for reimbursement. I will be sending the money this Saturday. And would like to thank everyone so far for their support. I need everyone to understand that the children are our future. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas. If any of the Locals are interested getting pins, please contact me at or phone number above, please leave a message if I don't answer. Merci James Rovinski 2017/12 Space to let $25.00 per year. Proceeds to help offset cost of printing this newsletter. 2

It was recommended and approved at Nationale to add the Preamble to the Constitution of La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux. In the new ritual manual, the preamble follows the POW/MIA opening in the Promenade. It also shows the Chef de Gare leading as in the Pledge of Allegiance. My Locale Chef is asking a different Locale Voyageur each promenade to lead with the Preamble. The Preamble is located further on in this edition of the Loco Motion News. John Public Relations Report Just a few notes: The grandduvirginia.org website has been updated regularly for the last year. While it is functional and informative, it is not catchy. I would like suggestions from all of you out there. Please let me know what we need to do to make it look appealing not only to those in the Grande and at Voiture Nationale, but to the curious who want to find out about the 40&8 and its programs. I would like to see Locale newsletters as well, we currently have two locales (380 and 1569) who publish a regular newsletter. If you are looking for information on starting a newsletter or social media page, here is the link to the Public Relations page: If your Locale has a Historien, he or she should be at every Locale event taking pictures and notes and compiling them for either a narrative or scrapbook. The Historien and the Locale Chef can use the narrative or the scrapbook as a recruitment tool. If your Locale has a Twitter, Instagram and Facebook presence, please let me know so we can add the links to our website. The keys to a successful year is through your computer. Success to all of you Victor Graulau Directeur, Public Relations 3
4 Salut to Voyageur Militaire of Grande du Virginia! I hope you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving and are looking forward to the Christmas holidays. As you all well aware, I ve more than just challenges since taking the position of Grand Correspondant. In all honesty, I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. Prior to taking the job, I had never served in any position like it. While I thought I would eventually get the hang of it, it s become overwhelming. Because of the overwhelming nature of the position, I ve decided effective 1 I will step aside for someone that can better handle the job. Additionally, I have decided that I need to curtail all my VSO related activities. I will try to support the activities at my Locale and Post, I will not commit to any activities beyond that. I will not be attending Southland Dixie or Nationale. I need to take some time to concentrate on my own health. God Bless La Societe and God Bless the United States. 7 Grande Directeur Carville Star Greetings Grand du Virginie Joseph de Veuster was born in rural Belgium, the youngest of seven children. Saint Damien as the world would remember after He was educated at the college of Braine-le-Comte, and in 1858 he joined the Society of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (Picpus Fathers) at Leuven, Belgium. In place of his brother, Father Pamphile, who had been stricken by illness, he went as a missionary to the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands in He reached Honolulu in 1864 and was ordained a priest the same year. Moved by the miserable condition of the lepers whom the Hawaiian government had deported to Kalaupapa on the island of Molokai, he volunteered to take charge of the settlement. Damien, known for his compassion, provided spiritual, physical, and emotional comfort to those suffering from the debilitating and incurable disease. He served as both pastor and physician to the colony and undertook many projects to better the conditions there. He improved water and food supplies and housing and founded two orphanages, receiving help from other priests for only 6 of his 16 years on Molokai. In 1884 he contracted leprosy and refused to leave for treatment. He was originally buried at the colony, as he requested, but his remains were transferred to Leuven in His right hand was returned to his original grave in Rumors before and after Damien s death accused him of immorality, but he was exonerated by an investigation held shortly after his death. Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson wrote a famously passionate 6,000-word defense of Damien after interviewing local Hawaiians during his travels in In 1965 Hawaii placed a statue of Damien in the National Statuary Hall of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Father Damien was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1995 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009 and remembered as Saint Damien. As we have learned thru articles and visits, so many supporters of Hansen s disease have given their all in support of these affected communities and people. I realize we are asked to support time and time again, but truly you can see a few dollars go a long way in supporting the underdeveloped countries of the world. Please consider supporting a country, a hospital or buying a CARVILLE STAR pin. 11 Grande Chef de Gare Salut all Voyageur Militaire of Grande du Virginia. I hope all had a great Christmas and New Year day. Let us remember those who have transferred to Voiture Everlasting in Those Voyageurs will be missed and now it is up to us to carry on the work and good deeds they have done for La Societe. Winter time is time to help those in our community who are in need. The Child Welfare Fund is there to help those children who have immediate needs. Can your Locale help a needy child in your schools or counties? Ask child services if you can do something to help someone. Remember that Nationale will reimburse your Locale for what you spend. The Winter Cheminot is just about here. We will be in Lorton again, and the hotel has been renovated and is under new owners. I hope many of you can make the Cheminot and Banquet. Can your Locale host an event for other Locales to come to? Let s have some fun!! If you have an event let us know. Our membership is just over 50%. 12 Chef de Train West Sous Chef de Train West Robert Yowell, Crest Lane, Bealeton, VA Phone: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. I would like to remind all of you to keep our Troops in you Thoughts and Prayer this Holiday Season. Please remember we need everyone to reach out and check on our older members and see why they haven't renewed their membership. If it's because of financial problem maybe your Voiture might be able to help. We also need new members. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but it's a known fact. If we don't bring up the numbers we will go by the wayside like the dinosaur. I will try to visit as many of the Voiture Locales as I can starting the new year. God Bless Our Troops and God Bless America. Robert Chef de Train East Salut Fellow Voyageurs: January2019 A few notes as we move to the New Year: We have the Winter Cheminot and Homecoming just weeks away and it is getting down to crunch time with regard to membership. Hopefully by the time this issue of the Locomotion News is published, we will have all of our locales in the East reporting 50% or better. As of 5December 2018, the following Locales are doing better than 50%: VL 53 Chesterfield 56.25% VL 86 Norfolk 83.05% VL 976 Tidewater 76.67% VL1530 Colonial Heights 84.42% VL1312 South Hill 57.14% Let us also make a concerted effort to boost our recruitment efforts. We need each locale to recruit 2-3 new voyageurs to make up for those we lose each year. I will be frank, if we don t find new members to fill our ranks, we could cease to exist as a Grande. Try to think outside the envelope, go past the traditional recruiting effort and don t forget to go through your rosters for those voyageurs who will be going off your roster at the end of the year. Good luck and get it done. Hope to see you all at the Winter Cheminot in Lorton. Looks to be a fun time as Chef Randy s theme is Pirates. 14 GRANDE DIRECTEUR CHILD WELFARE Salute Voyageurs Militaire Apologies, this is going to be a short article. I have run into many problems at home since returning from Promenade Nationale. I called Le Editor and gave him the following for this newsletter. I still have 45 - Child Welfare pins for I am at a loss in contacting the Voiture Locale Child Welfare Directeurs because the last edition of the yellow pages is lost somewhere in my house. I am in the process of contacting a couple of hotels, inquiring for one night room rates for veterans for the Spring Cheminot. 17 Grande Directeur POW-MIA 40 Rexford Dr. Newport News, VA (c) Salut, I finally won the race. I have been chasing gremlins all over the cyberspace of my modem the last two weeks. Caged them all up last night and got rid of them. Now to the business at hand. First, Thank you to the Voiture Locales who have bought and sold the remaining 2019 POW-MIA pins at the Fall Cheminot. Of my original 60 pins I took out on consignment from The National Directeur, V-976 sold 20 pins, V-380 sold 10 pins, I still have open consignments with V1530 for 20 pins, and Grande Cabane for 10 pins. If you have not been keeping records of your Locale's activities to support this program for the end of the year report. The POW-MIA report is a Time, Miles, and Money expended style report. 18 MEMORIAL DAY IN ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY The Forty and Eight Memorial Day Ceremony is an annual event hosted by the 40 & 8 Memorial Day Committee. Planning for the weekend starts in October for the next year s Memorial Day Ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery. The Sunday evening banquet includes the Calvin Kain Memorial Service. Monday is a solemn occasion when we attend and participate in the National Memorial Day Ceremony at the Amphitheater in Arlington National Cemetery. At this event, Voiture Nationale and Cabane Nationale Drapeaux are marched into the Amphitheater. After Memorial Day addresses are given by the President of the United States and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Chef de Chemin de Fer and La Presidente Nationale are invited to present a wreath at the tomb of the Unknowns. This is the only time that the 40 & 8 and La Femme leaders are recognized publicly by the US Government. In 2001 we started a tradition of giving a U.S. Flag to everyone entering the amphitheater. Because this requires about 10,000 flags, the committee requests donations. If you can help, please send your contribution to the Committee (as shown on the registration form). All donors will be listed in the Program Book. This is truly a weekend to remember and it is OPEN to everyone who would like to attend. Because of limited space, we recommend you register early. The weekend is largely financed by the Memorial Day Program Book, so even if you are unable to attend, please consider purchasing an ad or being a booster. Alvin R.
