Health Corner About 21 percent of adults in the U.S. always make it to the gym or exercise studio. Why them and not everyone? Steady exercisers have some habits in common. According to studies by Dr. Navin Kaushal of the Montreal Heart Institute, steady exercisers have a regular exercise schedule that never varies. They don't debate whether they have the time that day, because exercise is just part of the day. However, the most active people aren't rigid about their routines. While they always exercise, they are flexible on time. If they are 20 minutes late to the gym and can't make an exercise class, they will get in the remaining minutes doing something else. It still counts. In fact, regular exercisers count all sorts of activity as exercise. A family hike can count as exercise just as much as an hour of weight training, if the situation presents itself. Finally, it helps to have visual cues for exercise, Kaushal found in a 2017 study. A runner might have his running clothes laid out and ready to go. 10 John Shumway s Corner Doctor Shuttle Tuesday & Thursday The American Civil War, , was the greatest catastrophe America ever went through. This was the most brutal war in American history. Over 3 million men fought in it. Over 750,000 died in the war! This was about 5% of the men in the total American population of 31.2 million. It is estimated that about 23% of all Southern white men died in the war. So far, we Americans have faced nothing like this again in our entire history! After the election of Abraham Lincoln as President but before he was sworn in 11 Southern states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. The outbreak of armed hostilities in 1861 was the culmination of decades of growing sectional friction over slavery. Between 1815 and 1861 the economy of the Northern states was rapidly modernizing and diversifying. Although agriculture; mostly smaller farms that relied on free labor; remained the dominant economic sector in the North, industrialization had taken root there. Also Northerners had invested heavily in an expansive and varied transportation system that included canals, roads, steamboats, and railroads. The Union led in financial industries such as banking and insurance; and in having a large communications network that featured inexpensive, widely available newspapers, magazines, and books, along with the long range communication of the telegraph. By contrast, the Southern economy was based principally on large plantations that produced commercial crops such as cotton and that relied on slaves as the main labor source. [However, most white Southerners were, in fact, small farmers, not the Planters of Gone With The Wind fiction. Rather than investing in factories or railroads as Northerners had done, Southerners invested their money in slaves even more than in land; by 1860, 84 percent of the American capital invested in manufacturing was invested in the free states. Most Southerners were sure that their young men were far better suited to victorious battle than a gaggle of untrained Northern mechanics and small farmers. Southern men were very familiar with firearms and ready to use them to defend their Southern honor. I think it is fair for the Historian to say they had almost no clue about what was to happen to them and their quasi-feudal way of life. Thus the saddest story in our shared history began. 12 Why is it that as we grow older, many of us expects less and worse? Fact is: we usually get what we expect. Emotions are a strange and powerful lot. How many of us fully understand our own emotions and how they affect us both positively and negatively? How many of us are in control of how we feel? Do you get up in the morning hoping to have a better day yet leave it to chance? Do you make it happen or simply -- let -- it happen? Volumes have been written on this subject but as usual, I m going out on a limb and attempt to crunch it all into one column so you can learn how to create a great life with as little effort as possible. All I ask is that you learn a few rules and use them daily. Do You Ask But You Don t Get? First of all, do you REALLY know what you want? And are you enjoying that which you desire because even though you may not be aware of it, the thing that you truly desire on a deep emotional level is what is driving your emotions and creating the kind of energy that surrounds you. That energy, be it positive or negative, goes out from you to those around you and beyond. Positive energy is free-flowing, feels comfortable, satisfying, life-giving. Negative energy is uncomfortable, aggravating. If it feels like work, such as the exercise you resist, and you have to make it happen, your energy is probably out of alignment. Don t want to and it feels like a struggle to make it happen rather than peacefully letting it happen, your energy is probably out of alignment within you. Do you hear a buzz within you that you keep ignoring? Blame it on to a sickness, a virus, something you ate? Something going around? Probably not. Your energy may be out of whack. LISTEN TO THE BUZZ Some call it vibrational energy. Yes, we re flesh, blood and bone but we are also extensions of The Source Energy, or vibrational energy. When we get sick, our energy is out of whack, out of balance, or not-at-ease (dis-ease). So when you hear a buzz, don t ignore it. It s not normal. Since each of us come into this world as a creative genius and have access to The Power, the way you create with and utilize it tells you what kind of attention you give it. Whatever we give our attention to creates the energy we generate. You are like a wireless computer, and so you don t have to plug yourself in with some wire in order to connect to the network which is Source Energy, says Esther and Jerry Hicks, author of Ask And It Is Given. But it depends on how we align ourselves with The Source of Energy that determines how we feel. When we are full of this energy, we feel great and the world looks rosy. However, when we are approaching empty, orneriness, fitfulness, despair, depression are some of the strong emotions we feel. We are not allowing the creative energy to flow through us as freely and fully as it could. Our tank never runs out, says Hicks. When we can take the approach to life that, I m going to make the best of this. No matter where I am, I m going to make the best of it. That means that if I make the best of it, it s got to get better, and if I still keep making the best of it, it has to get even better, and then people are going to find us very nice to be with. Children will find us joyous instead of critical; others will find joy through our examples. As we all know, but have a difficult time remembering, we never teach anyone anything by pointing out what they re doing wrong and then trying to discipline them into doing something that we believe to be right. Hicks say, No one else can evaluate anyone else s emotional scale. It s an inside job. It s a personal job and nobody else can do it.
