2 Celebrate Gift of P.E.O. By Diane Browning, F, President, Utah State Chapter P.E.O. As we enter the season of gift giving, I would like to take this time to thank my friend who gave me the gift of P.E.O. 34 years ago. I would also like to remind you that one of the Utah State goals this year is to celebrate the gift of P.E.O. by increasing membership. To date, 22 chapters have given the gift of P.E.O. by initiation; seven chapters gave the gift of P.E.O. through reinstatement; and 12 chapters have helped transfers in keep the gift of P.E.O. active in Utah. These gifts resulted in an increase of 57 members so far. What a celebration! You can track the membership numbers yourself by logging into and clicking on the Membership menu across the top of the page under P.E.O. Sisterhood. This is an embedded site that changes in live time. I always find it uplifting to see that the spirit of giving is alive in the hearts of our P.E.O. chapters. May you all have a wonderful holiday season. I slept and I dreamed that life is all joy. I woke and I saw that life is all service. I served and I saw that service is joy. - Kahlil Gibran Glen Ella Jones Application Updated By Diane Doelfs, AN, GEJ Chair It s time to start searching for philanthropy applicants and getting them pre-screened before the open application time of January 1-April 15, As students get closer to the holidays, they will be thinking about finding funding for their next term/semester after the holidays are over. The Glen Ella Jones (GEJ) Scholarship Fund application has been updated and is ready for downloading. For the most up-to-date application visit the Utah P.E.O. website at And please check the website for the address to mail completed applications. The GEJ Fund provides a one-time scholarship to a female Utah resident, 21 years of age or older who has graduated from high school or has earned a GED and who has never completed a college degree. For eligibility requirements, please visit the Utah State P.E.O. website. This scholarship may be used at any two- or four-year college or university, including nationally accredited vocational schools. Applicants must be sponsored by a Utah P.E.O. Chapter. There will be one GEJ award per year. The amount of the award will be based on the income of the fund, so as your chapter is deciding on which philanthropies to donate to, please keep the Glen Ella Jones Scholarship Fund in mind. As our principal balance grows, so will the income and the amount of the award. The GEJ committee is looking forward to helping a deserving applicant. Please contact Diane Doelfs AN, GEJ Chair at peoutah.jones@gmail.com, if you have any questions. Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - December 2018 Return to Table of Contents Page 2 of 10

3 Sponsoring Chapters Needed for P.C.E. By Patricia Curtis, V, PSP, Program for Continuing Education Chair In Utah this year, the P.W.O. Program for Continuing Education has received eight requests from women who want to apply but have no P.E.O. Chapter to sponsor their applications. Each of these eight names has been passed on to three different chapters asking one of the chapters to contact the individual and help them with an application for a Continuing Education Grant. P.C.E. was established in 1973 to provide needs-based grants to women in the United States and Canada whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school to support themselves and/or their families. The chapter should verify her eligibility, review her income and expenses, and then focus on her application. The application form can be found on the P.E.O. International website under Program for Continuing Education. When the application has been completed by a chapter, the website provides specific instructions for submitting the application and walks the chapter through the actual process of submitting it. Sponsoring a PCE candidate is a rewarding experience both for the chapter and for the applicant. Make it a chapter goal to find and sponsor one PCE candidate this year! Celebrate 150 Years With Special Donation By Nancy Labahn, B, Utah State Treasurer Celebrate our 150th Birthday with a donation to the 150 Fund! In celebration of P.E.O. s 150th Birthday, contributions to the 150 Fund are now being accepted. The goal is to have every chapter in every state and province contribute to the celebration by their contribution of $150! Your contributions will help support International s philanthropies, provide a permanent tribute to P.E.O. s 150th Birthday at the executive offices in Des Moines, and help maintain and preserve the birthplace of our sisterhood in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. So, how do we contribute? Chapter Donations should be sent to S/P/D treasurer. Please note that this contribution must be submitted in the full amount of $150 for that chapter to receive credit. Personal Donations shall be submitted to the P.E.O. Foundation -150 Fund and sent directly to the P.E.O. Executive Office, 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, Iowa There is also a link on for Personal Credit Card Donations. Let s strive for 100 percent participation from all our Utah Chapters! Utah P.E.O. 4 Remember that We are Sisters Always By Kimberly Albro, AE, PSP, Membership Committee Member Showing a Loving Concern. As P.E.O.s, we hear this phrase frequently. Do we put it into practice? I believe we do. I know that each chapter has its own way of showing a loving concern for our sisters. When someone loses a loved one, the chapter is there to help in many ways: comfort, support, meals, prayers, etc. The same is true when a chapter sister is ill or going through a hard time. We, as her P.E.O. sisters, are quick to reach out with a helping hand. Showing support and love during times like these is necessary and always appreciated. We also share the happy times and enjoy each other at our many social functions throughout the year. Especially at this time of year, we remember how thankful we are for our P.E.O. sisters. If we listen to the words of our beautiful initiation ceremony, we know there are many ways for us to show a loving concern during normal times as well. For as we know, our vows carry great meaning that cannot be set aside. This means that we are sisters always. And like sibling sisters, we may not always see eye to eye, but we must respect each other and be loving and loyal. Loving concern means we shine a light on our sister s talents and leave her shortcomings in the shadows. Remember to celebrate our normalness. Be sure to welcome back a sister to a meeting if she s been away for awhile. Reach out to those that can t attend meetings and be sure they know of socials and outings that they might be able to attend. Celebrate birthdays, new babies, new grandmothers, special honors, all the normal life events. If we support our sisters when things are calm, we will come together even stronger in times of need. In the process, we will strengthen our chapter and grow P.E.O. by preserving the members we have and welcoming new sisters into our loving chapters. P.E.O. Philanthropy Flyers Spread the Word By Stephanie Halton, U, Vice President, Utah State Chapter P.E.O. Through monetary donations and identification of qualified candidates by members and local chapters, the International and Utah philanthropies have supported women's pursuit of education for over a century. New flyers help tell the remarkable story by the numbers. Each flyer provides helpful information such as the year a fund was established, the total amount disbursed, and the number of women supported. International projects have given a whopping $321 million to 105,000 women while Utah funds have awarded an impressive $882,000 to 625 women. PDFs may be downloaded from Feel free to share them during a chapter program or event and provide to a new initiate or transfer. The bottom line is that P.E.O. has and continues to make a difference in the lives of women. Let s spread the word! Utah P.E.O. 6 Daisy-love Team to Reach Out to Sisters By Nancy Edwards Williams, Utah State Unaffiliate Coordinator Tis the season for giving! How about giving the gift that brightens someone s spirits? Announcing the formation of The Daisy-love Team. The requirements for membership are simple: the ability to show a loving concern for a sister. As Unaffiliate Coordinator for the state, I have the pleasure of speaking to sisters who have moved to Utah and treasure their P.E.O. membership. A few of them have moved here to be closer to family and are unable to attend meetings due to health or mobility issues. They are always delighted to hear from Utah P.E.O. and miss their chapter sisters back home. They don t want to be forgotten! This is where you, as a member of the Daisy-love Team, join the picture. Are you willing to share up to an hour a month to stay in touch with one of these sisters? Perhaps a phone call to get better acquainted and talk about what sisters talk about. Or a handwritten note or greeting card to let your sister know she s on your mind ( works for some also). Maybe you could arrange to drop in for a chat to brighten her day. If you are interested in this fulfilling opportunity, please contact me for more information. You ll be under no obligation until you feel this is something you want to do (showing a loving concern for one of these sisters). I m looking forward to hearing from you! Nancy Edwards Williams, (leave a message), nancywms65@gmail.com. Reciprocity Connects Chapters By Karen Post, A RECIPROCITY re ci proc i ty (resʹə-prosʹə-ti) What does it all mean? 1. Reciprocal state or relationship; mutual action, dependence, etc. 2. A reciprocating; interchange; mutual exchange. And that pretty much says it all. No chapter in our state of Utah (and in all the other states) operates in a bubble. We are all doing the same things raising funds and sponsoring girls and women for scholarships. But sometimes we get sidetracked. We get bogged down trying to find where we can get more money. Or, we just never seem to be coming across anyone who can qualify for a scholarship. And we can easily get into a slump. Reciprocity to the rescue! Reciprocity meetings are held four times a year. The Salt Lake Area Reciprocity Group covers the Salt Lake area and south. Utah P.E.O. 7 Each chapter sends two delegates to the meetings, but, anyone is welcome to come and partake. The meetings are informational and inspirational. Chapters meet and mingle with each other, sharing ideas and friendships. The names of unaffiliated members (perhaps those who are new to Utah who haven t affiliated with a chapter, yet) are given out to each chapter so they might be contacted and welcomed (and possibly invited to join a chapter). Two or three of our P.E.O. philanthropies are discussed, and we always have a delightful interchange with our state officers. The upcoming Reciprocity meeting will be held Thursday, February 14, 2019 (Happy Valentine s Day) at the First Congregational Church, 2150 Foothill Drive. This particular meeting will be in the morning; refreshments will be served at 10 a.m. and the meeting will begin at 10:30. Anyone is invited, so we hope to see you there! Chapter AA Knits Together for Babies By Brenda Hiraoka, President Chapter AA In our desire to remain lifelong learners, Chapter AA members were delighted to learn a new skill and to serve our community all in one endeavor. With the wonderful and patient guidance of our member, Jeanette Nosker, we learned how to knit a baby beanie on a round loom. Each member provided her own loom, needle, and skein of yarn. It was a fun experience, and it was another opportunity for members to help and encourage each other. The red beanies that were made will be given to the American Heart Association so they can give one to all babies born in Utah in February to celebrate Heart Month. The rest of the beanies will be given to local hospitals so they can give them to all newborn babies. We hope to make this an ongoing project as we strive to serve others and keep our hands and minds busy. Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - December 2018 Return to Table of Contents Page 7 of 10
