1 The Foundation Light Volume 4 Number 4 December-January-February Inside this Issue: IRA Charitable Gifts 2 Pre-Arranged Funerals 2 Clifton-Gaston Allen Lodge 3 Published by The Lakewood Masonic Foundation Our Top Level Need Replacing Windows Thanks to the continuing generosity of our donors, our ongoing campaign for funds to replace our Lodge Room balcony level windows the top row in the photo above has passed the halfway point; and we are now driving toward the finish line so that this vitally needed project can be completed next summer. The windows in question have deteriorated to the point where water is seeping into our building and damaging the surrounding plaster. Especially distressing is the related damage to the decorative painting in our Lodge Room. Replacing these windows with their modern day equivalents will also reward us with new functional and energysaving technologies even as we preserve the historical integrity of our beautiful home for future generations of our Masonic Family and the Lakewood and West Shore communities. In a related project, The Lakewood Masonic Temple Company Lakewood Lodge 4 Ann Rutledge Chapter 5 Cunningham Chapter 6 Lakewood Council 7 Holy Grail Commandery 8 is undertaking critically needed repairs where the chimney meets the roof another source of damaging water leaks. Vital historic preservation projects such as these are made possible in large measure by gifts to The Lakewood Masonic Foundation and/or The Lakewood Masonic Temple Company. Donors desiring preferred federal tax treatment will want to donate to our Foundation. Gifts to our Temple Company are also greatly appreciated but are not deductible for federal income or estate tax purposes. While an individual might think that his or her seemingly modest gift would make little difference to a large project such as windows, nothing could be further from the truth. Just as our Temple was constructed from a few large and many small building stones, the financing needed to save our Masonic home must be assembled from a few large and many seemingly modest donations, including continuing gifts from our loyal supporters. 2 Time Running Out For IRA Charitable Gifts The Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows individuals 70-1/2 and older to make tax-exempt charitable contributions up to $100,000 directly from their IRA assets to an eligible charity. This transaction must be made by December 31, 2007, since there is no guarantee that this provision will be extended. This qualified charitable distribution (QCD) also satisfies the minimum distribution rule for IRA account holders 70-1/2 or older. Married couples may donate up to $200,000, provided that each spouse owns at least one IRA and can make a $100,000 QCD. This type of gift could be especially beneficial to higher income taxpayers since the donated amount is not included in adjusted gross income, thereby reducing the chance that your itemized deductions will exceed the phase-out threshold. QCDs are not subject to the 50% of adjusted gross income limitation, which may allow you to give more than you otherwise could while still receiving the related tax benefits. A QCD is also attractive to taxpayers who otherwise could not deduct a charitable contribution because they take a standard deduction rather than itemize. As always, you are encouraged to consult with your legal and tax advisors before making a gift of this type. Your gifts to The Lakewood Masonic Foundation are a tangible way to show your love for our Lakewood Masonic Family and for our historic home. Rest assured that all gifts, other than a small percentage spent for printing and mailing, are used for our stated purposes of historic preservation, charity and education. Pre-Arranged Funerals Becoming Popular Today more and more families are making funeral arrangements in advance. Why are they pre-arranging? Pre-arranging can be a great relief to those you love, sparing them the burden of making decisions at a time of great emotion. It allows YOUR choices to be heard, respected and acknowledged. The TOTAL cost will be secured at the time of purchase, alleviating future financial stress, with a variety of payment options typically available commensurate with your current financial needs. Most cemeteries and funeral directors now offer many types of memorialization ranging from traditional ground burials and lawn crypts to mausoleum entombments to several types of cremation choices. These selections are typically available in a variety of settings and price points. As a member of the Masonic Family, be sure to specify in your pre-arrangements whether you want a Masonic or Eastern Star service, to which Masonic organizations you belong, and where your leather apron or other fraternal paraphernalia is stored. Thanks to Barbara (Haskett) Blankfeld, Family Service Advisor, Sunset Memorial Park, North Olmsted, Ohio, for contributing to this article. 2 The Foundation Light published quarterly by The Lakewood Masonic Foundation Detroit Avenue Lakewood, Ohio Historic Preservation Charity Education Board of Trustees Robert G. 3 Clifton-Gaston Allen Lodge #664 F. & A. M. Stated Meeting Second Thursday 7:30 p.m. Special Meeting Fourth Thursday Master s Message We re off and running for Clifton-Gaston Allen Lodge started off the new Lodge year with our 40th Anniversary celebration with Dominion Lodge, Windsor, Canada, on November 24. We conferred the Master Mason Degree on one candidate, my son Jim. What an honor it is to continue the third generation of Masonic tradition in my family. We completed the day with our annual installation of officers. All of our visitors from Dominion Lodge and St. John s Lodge were thoroughly entertained, and we all enjoyed an evening of after glow which immediately followed the installation. Our annual Christmas Party will be combined with Lakewood Lodge on Monday December 17 at 7:00p. You will receive a card in the mail to make reservations. This will be an enjoyable evening with Christmas carols, presents, refreshments and Santa Claus. At our special meeting on December 27 we will initiate one candidate in the EA Degree while he is home from college. On January 10 the FC Degree will be performed on one candidate. Please plan to attend and support our newest members to Freemasonry. As we move into 2008 we have scheduled entertainment for many of our meetings. Stay tuned for information regarding dinners before several of our meetings. Be sure to check our lodge calendar for updates ( lakewoodmasonicfoundation.org/calendar664.htm). My Brethren, often we talk about the good old days and how the Lodge ran when we were young men. Electronics have impacted us from computers to wide screen TVs to cell phones. Can you imagine what our lives were like just 50 years ago? But times change, and so does our world. Yet Masonry stands the test of time to make good men better. Many men are seeking that moral compass Masonry offers them. Let us keep a watchful eye for these men and be ready to offer them timely counsel and a petition. 22nd Masonic District Installation Schedule Dec 1 Sat Theodore Breck #714 6:00p Open Van Horn Dec 1 Sat Quarry #382 7:00p Open Phelps Dec 1 Sat Collinwood #582 7:30p Open Van Horn Dec 5 Wed LaGrange #399 7:30p Open Phelps Dec 6 Thu University Heights #738 7:00p Open Cole Dec 6 Thu Dover #489 7:30p Tyled Van Horn Dec 6 Thu Solon #757 7:30p Open Van Horn Dec 8 Sat Stonington #503 7:00p Open Phelps Dec 8 Sat Cornerstone #699 7:30p Open Behner Dec 10 Mon Halcyon #498 7:30p Tyled Phelps Dec 11 Tue Parkside #736 7:30p Open Behner Dec 14 Fri Acacia #651 7:30p Open Woodworth Dec 14 Fri Heights-Lion Heart #633 7:30p Open Van Horn Dec 15 Sat Euclid #599 7:30p Open Cole Worshipful Master Robert W. 4 Lakewood Lodge #601 F. & A. M. Stated Meetings Second & Fourth Mondays 7:30 p.m. Special Meeting Third Monday Master s Message It doesn t seem that long ago that I was writing an article just like this one. I want to thank the brethren for placing their trust in me to again serve the Lodge as Master. We have a special year ahead of us as this is our 100th year. We have several special events planned for the year, and there will be others that are just in the idea stage at present. I wish to call on all of our members to visit the Lodge as often as you can during the next twelve months and partake of the events we have planned. Keep in mind May 17, 2008, our reconsecration. Also October 20, 2008, our 100th anniversary dinner. More details will be forthcoming on these events, but mark your calendars now and plan to be there. I have always had a fondness for history. This year the traditions and the history of our Lodge strike home most forcefully. I feel an obligation to all those who have come before us to properly celebrate this special time. Also, my good friend Bob Wykoff is again serving Clifton-Allen lodge as Master. I ve known Bob for a number of years, and there are a number of activities which we shall have together. Additionally, we are planning to form a combined Fellowcraft Team from the two Lodges which should enable us to confer a Master Mason degree more easily. In any case, below is the schedule for the next three months. 6 Scribe s Message Companions: Our High Priest and King have resigned their offices with Cunningham Chapter. Their decision was based on events that recently occurred relative to their Blue Lodge and not related in any way to Cunningham Chapter. As Scribe, their duties fall to me. In addition to the calendar of events listed below, we will be having a dinner meeting at the Temple sometime in January to discuss the future of Cunningham Chapter. I will be sending each member of Cunningham a notice of the meeting in January once the details are finalized. I know that several Companions have stayed away from Chapter recently because several of our newer members belonged to a Lodge in the district that was involved in some controversy, again having nothing to do with Cunningham Chapter. To those Companions who have been staying away, I can assure you that the members who were causing difficulties are being dealt with and will not be involved with, nor will they be a distraction to, Cunningham Chapter. Please consider coming back and offering your opinions regarding our future. We value your opinion, and we would like your input. To the members who have been staying away because you are afraid if you show up you will be asked to learn a part or take an office, I assure you the purpose of the meeting in January will not be to lure you to the Temple so we can give you a hard sell about why you should do more for the Chapter. That will not be the purpose of the meeting, and I will not allow the meeting to devolve into anything like that. The meeting in January will be to have an honest discussion about the future of the Chapter, whatever future that may be. This is your Chapter too, and we want to include as many Companions in this discussion as possible, so that whatever we decide, it will be a decision made by the many and not by the few. We have reached a crossroad, and we would like your opinions regarding what path Cunningham takes from this point. Please try to attend and help us decide what direction we will travel. Thank you, Companions. December 26 January TBA January 23 February 27 March 26 April 23 May 28 6 Cunningham Chapter #187 R. A. M. F. Rustici, says that about the year 1512 there was established at Florence an Association which counted among its members some of the most distinguished and learned inhabitants of the city. It was the Societa della Cucchiara, or the Society of the Trowel. Vasari adds that its symbols were the Trowel, the Hammer, the Square, and the Level, and had for its parton Saint Andrew, which makes Reghellini think, rather illogically, that it had some relation to the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. Lenning, too, says that this Society was the first appearance of Freemasonry in Florence. It is to be (continued on page 10) Illustrious Master Darrel A. 8 8 Holy Grail Commandery #70 K. T. Stated Meeting Second Wednesday 7:30 p.m. Commander s Message Sir Knights and Ladies of the Commandery: What a wonderful time of the year! We have just enjoyed the festivities and bountiful tables of the Thanksgiving Feast and the opportunity to offer praise and thanksgiving to the one who provides all that we have. Now we are entering the Winter season. December brings us so much to look forward to. I know some of you will look cockeyed at me when I exclaim the excitement of the first of the snowfalls and the cold that locks all of our trees and plants down for the winter season a most important time in the nature of things. The plants are now going through the time of strengthening from within, preparing for Spring growth. Your Commandery needs and will be basically doing the same thing. As we confer the Orders over the next several months we will be reminding ourselves of the important lessons that are revealed in the Orders and how we are to pattern our lives for our future relationship with our fellow Sir Knights and Masons. We will strengthen our knowledge of the Templar Orders and this Spring will burst open with the Order of the Temple creating new Sir Knights and reinvigorating our Fraters. We truly pray that you will want to be part of this winter s work and help strengthen our Commandery. December 12, 2007, we will begin our evening at 6:30p when we join with our Ladies for our Christmas Pot Luck. At 7:30p our Stated Conclave will open for a short business meeting after which we will confer the Order of the Red Cross. If you would like to participate in the work, we have many non-uniform parts where short lines are read from cue cards. We would really like to have you join us. December 2 the Seventh Division will be doing a Division-wide Christmas program at 3615 Euclid. Times and details are yet to be announced. January 9 we will once again enjoy the pot luck with the Ladies at 6:30p, a short business meeting at 7:30p, and then we will confer the Order of Malta. Again, there is plenty for everyone no uniforms we provide everything needed. February 13 and March 12 meetings will be involved in rehearsal for the Order of the Temple for our Annual Inspection which will be on April 12, The change from March is due to Holy Week observances, and more details will follow after the first of the year. Sir Knights we need your help in the conferring of these Orders; the more in attendance the more impressive the work is. I hope you will respond favorably. 10 Lakewood Chapter Order of DeMolay Stated Meetings First & Third Thursdays 7:30 p.m. Lakewood DeMolay meets on the first and third Thursday of each month, and all Master Masons are encouraged to visit at any meeting. Membership is open to young men aged 12 to 21 and who are sponsored by Masons. Chapter Advisor Jim Pace Society of the Trowel (continued from page 7) regretted that such misstatements of Masonic history should be encouraged by writers of learning and distinction. The perusal of the account of the formation of this society, as given by Vasari, shows that it had not the slightest connection with Freemasonry. It was simply a festive association, or dinner-club of Florentine artists; and it derived its title from the accidental circumstance that certain painters and sculptors, dining together in a garden, found not far from their table a mass of mortar, in which a trowel was sticking. Some rough jokes passed thereupon, in the casting of the mortar to each other, and the calling for the trowel to scrape it off. Whereupon they resolved to form an association to dine together annually, and, in memorial of the ludicrous event that had led to their establishment, they called themselves the Society of the Trowel. from Mackey s Revised Encyclopedia of Freemasonry, Would you like to advertise in The Foundation Light?
