1 Saranac Community Church June Newsletter 2015 SUMMER GARDENING One of the activities that I am looking forward to this summer is gardening, mainly because it is something I have done with my son for the past two summers. This year Cyrus has already helped me prepare the soil and plant the seeds, and now we look forward to the daily watering and weeding, eventually seeing vegetables like beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions spout from the earth. I am grateful for this activity with my son, mainly because I think of the many lessons that gardening can gradually instill into his growing mind: responsibility, work ethic, creation care, basic science principles...not to mention making loads of dirty clothes for mommy to wash! However, as I thought about it this past week, I see gardening as an image for what the Christian Formation program at SCC tries to do as we teach God s Word and attempt to nurture all members of all ages to grow in faith and holiness. I think of the process of gardening, and I came up with some important comparisons. Preparing the soil is the Christian Formation that we do for our younger children in nursery and elementary school. By showing them that church is a safe place to be; by providing them with committed teachers who love them; and by familiarizing them with basic Bible stories and teachings about Jesus, we are softening their hearts and preparing their minds to receive the Gospel message and the Christian faith. As any gardener will tell you, seeds will grow well only if the soil has been well-prepared. Planting the seeds is the Christian Formation that we do for our Confirmands and Senior High Youth. In this age grouping, we encourage them to receive the seeds of faith for themselves. These teens are challenged to develop a firsthand faith, instead of merely assuming their parents faith. Activities like youth group, summer camp, and CHIC can be powerful places for them to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior, and to have that seed begin to germinate in their lives. Watering and weeding is the Christian Formation that we do for adults of all ages in Sunday school and small groups. Many people think that once the seed of faith is planted, that s all we need. Unfortunately, the truth is that the seed of Christian faith needs to be nurtured and watered, or it will not bear fruit in our lives. Also, we must constantly look for weeds we must hold each other accountable and look for things in life that might stunt our growth or keep us from bearing fruit. If we are going to be faithful Christians, I think that we should look at our faith formation like gardening, and we need to be very diligent about following all of these steps. This is why the ministry of Christian Formation is so important, and why we should be absolutely committed to seeing it thrive here! Continued on pg. 2

2 Summer Gardening continued I know that it is now summer break and we tend to take a Sabbath from Sunday school and other forms of Christian Formation. That s ok, but let s not forget how important it is for our lives as individuals and as a community of faith! Please join Pastor Becky, the Christian Formation Commission, and me in praying that a vibrant ministry of learning and growing will continue here, and that Jesus will truly bring forth a harvest of faithfulness and fruitfulness in our lives! Together, let us grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! (2 Peter 3:18) Have a great summer! Pastor Jeff OUR GOD-GIVEN MISSION TOGETHER OUR GOD-GIVEN MISSION TOGETHER We are committed to being a fellowship of believers in Jesus Christ who glorify our Triune God and practice positive Christian living by growing in God s Word, caring for each other, and reaching out with God s love by responding to the physical and spiritual needs of others.
