4 Lt. Commander s Corner By Mr. Don Sullivent Being relatively new to this fine organization, there are still a lot of things I must learn. I was taught the Confederate Battle Flag was a symbol of a racist South. My teachers and others couldn t have been more wrong, but unfortunately that is the belief a majority of non-southerners have. I saw a program on television the other night about a Nazi leader who was just murdered by his 10 year old son. It showed a meeting where the speakers were surrounded by Nazi flags, and the Confederate Battle Flag. I found this to be disgusting, demoralizing, and offensive toward our heritage, something non-southerners would capitalize on to support their unfounded conclusions. I also never knew the true story of Abraham Lincoln, until I joined the Sons of Confederate Veterans. I, like many others, thought him to be some kind of hero. It s a crime that our history books tell a tainted version on both of these subjects. We need to portray the battle flag for what it really was, a symbol of resistance against Northern aggression, and they should portray Lincoln for the traitor he was. Deo Vindici! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our True Confederate Heritage Defense of State Rights by Compatriot Scott Price As I began to sit down and write an article for our Camp around the topic of Heritage, I came to the conclusion that our emphasis around Heritage issues starts and begins with the importance of State Rights. That is the reason the War of Northern Aggression was fought by our beloved ancestors to begin with. In this current era that we live in, State Rights are under attack each and every day. The Federal Government is and has steadily trampled over State Rights and the 10 th Amendment for years. It has reached a point that the right for States to choose what fits, and what is best for that state, has all but diminished. Our Forefathers did not intend for this to be. Our Constitution was framed and designed for the states to have control in common matters, as they realized what was important to an individual from Georgia, may not be as important to someone from Pennsylvania. That was, and still is, the beauty of our Constitution. It was designed for localities to determine how to best govern, not a central government. In our country of 310 million, one can easily see that it is nearly impossible for a central government to effectively govern. This can easily turn into tyranny and despotism when it is attempted, and this is slowly (but now even quicker!) where we are headed. Why is it right for someone in Washington to tell someone in Mississippi what kind of flag they can fly in their own yard? In reviewing several of the Southern Heritage websites, it becomes even more apparent that the attack on State Rights is at an all time high. I feel strongly that it is our duty, as Sons of Confederate Veterans that we consistently strive to be and remain advocates of State Rights. How do we accomplish this? Stay involved and support organizations such as ours, and the Southern Legal Resource Center, who fights legal battles constantly to preserve Southern Heritage. Also, be an educator. A lot of people in our country simply think that the War Between the States was fought over slavery. This is the biggest myth out there! When the opportunity arises, stick to the facts, and use this moment to educate those to the truth about history. And finally, pray! Yes pray, to our Lord that we can be granted the strength to be diligent and successful in our defense of our Southern Heritage. General Lee, Stuart, Jackson, etc. all believed passionately in the power of genuine, heartfelt prayer. We should do the same. Our rights and heritage

is under attack, and we must not ever forget why the war was fought to start with. If we keep this in mind, we will always be true defenders and leaders of protecting our Southern Heritage.

6 We Stand in Two Nations By Bishop L. V. Carlson One hundred and fifty years ago this October 31 st (on October 31, 1861) a remnant of the Missouri state legislature met in Neosho, Missouri, and solemnly but firmly voted to secede from the Federal Union and join their state to the Confederate States of America. With their vote Missouri became a state in both nations. This happened because the main body of the state legislature, meeting in Jefferson City, the state capitol, had voted to remain in the Union. Thus Missouri entered a unique period in our nation s history, the War Between the States, as a combatant on both sides. In this situation, there is never a winner. Do you ever feel like Missouri? Often, we feel as if our lives are divided - like Missouri a state in two nations, we are men in two worlds. One world is represented by the honorable life we live among our compatriots in the Sons of Confederate Veterans and other heritage and legacy organizations. We enjoy shared values. We march together to the same drummer. (If you attended the Huntington Beach Civil War Re-Enactment you know what I mean!!) We love the nation (the Confederate nation) that our forefathers created and fought to defend. And we also love the America in which we grew up, the America that fought World War Two and the Cold War to make the world safe from Communism. We love the nation that went to the moon and that encourages us to celebrate our faith and heritage. The flag of that nation still flies on our flag poles, but it is a very different nation in which we live today. This new world in which we live is a place where our freedoms are being eroded in the name of political correctness. It is a place where people attempt to use diversity to prevent me from being me, from expressing my true opinions and exercising my Freedom of Speech. We live during a time where taxes are rising to pay for welfare for others, millions of others. Soon, we ll be on welfare, too. Our standing among nations is being diminished as our economy falls deeply into debt (new debt) and our leaders fail to assert our leadership in the world. We dare not fly or display our battle flags. In many states it is illegal. Into this new world, dark clouds are gathering, obscuring the bright sunshine of the other America, the land of the free and the home of the brave. And there we stand, citizens of both worlds. This is the challenge that we face. It is the fact of our lives. Each man must choose what he will do, how he will live. Next month: Choose today whom you will serve Comments from Commander Cooley Thanks to all of you who paid your dues and a Special Thanks goes out to Thomas Wheeler who donated $100 to the camp. The SCV needs all her SONS and in this day and age it couldn t be more important. We finished the year (August 1 st, 2010 August 1 st, 2011) with 25 members. I was hoping we would continue with new growth, considering the post card effort being published by Headquarters; but unfortunately the responses to our follow ups haven t been what we hoped for. Headquarters has been sending out post cards in various publications and the interested party then mails the card back. We ve had a bunch of interested people all over California, including a handful from Orange County. Not one in OC who was sent a letter responded. Also, all the potential contacts from Huntington Beach failed to net any new members as well. Not sure what the problem is, but what really bothers me is having a member who discovered his heritage and knows for sure he is blood from the Confederacy, and then resigns and withdraws his membership. Go figure? I mentioned below that a member can join Headquarters and therefore not be involved in a particular camp, or if necessary just ask me for a transfer form and we ll get you relocated. You don t have to attend a meeting to be a member. Also, check out my article in the next Division Newsletter, where I talk on this subject. Currently, we have 20 members, and I m still pursuing the delinquents. I paid (2) member dues from camp funds because they are seriously ill. Headquarters has been paid for

7 DEAR COMPATRIOT: It s that time again to renew your membership in the SCV. There isn t another organization out there that comes close to what we do and represent. We are professionally recognized as a patriotic, historical, genealogical, and a benevolent organization. What we do is not only an honor, but a duty to remember our ancestor s and their place in history. As you well know, we need every SON to stay active and we need to recruit our family, friends, and the people we casually meet. Our future is dependent upon our ability to stay united, keep our members, recruit new members, and do good things. We have several cemeteries in Orange County where we honor our CS Vets. Each year we meet at H.B. and greet the public while trying to recruit new members. The potential is great for us to visit more reenactments and talk to the public it takes members. We donate to the local American Legion/VFW each year. Our camp just voted to purchase Christmas gifts for the unfortunate at the Orangewood Children s Home. We are considering another charity project as something we should do in the name of the Sons. The possibilities are endless, but it takes good men such as you to make these things happen. Then again, if you cannot take part in our activities don t surrender and withdraw; obviously you still honor your own people and that s what we re all about. Your membership is important; in fact, it is critical in this day and age. If you joined once before, why would you disown YOUR organization? If you re not happy being in a certain camp, you can always transfer to another camp or to the headquarters camp. By doing either of these two things, you ll still be a part of preserving your heritage and defending the good name of the Confederate Soldier; your ancestor. 9 Minutes MINUTES SCV MEETING SEPT 18, We met at our compatriot s home, Jim and Uni Fosdyck in Garden Grove, CA. 2. Thanks again to the Fosdyck s for their hospitality and especially to Uni for grilling those wonderful Bar.B.Q ribs. 3. We began with an invocation by Reverend Louis Carlson. 4. Pledge to the US Flag by Ray Evans. 5. Salute to the CS Battleflag by Scott Price. 6. Reading of the Charge by Steven Frogue. 7. Commander s Report mentioned our sincere empathy for Rev. Kent Jones as we prayed for his swift return and good health. Also, mentioned was several of our faithful members who were missing the meeting and our thanks to everyone who did attend. 8. Adjutant s Report opened the checkbook for review, and mentioned our accounting status. We are in the process of collecting dues and still need about ½ of our camp membership to send their dues in. The adjutant also made mention of our recruitment efforts and those by headquarters using advertising post cards. The adjutant mailed out about 14 cards to prospective members letting them know we are here and offering to help them with genealogy services. Unfortunately, we haven t any responses to our mass mailing as of yet. 9. Kent Jones our Heritage Officer is temporarily out of action with health issues, so Cmdr. Cooley talked about several issues published in the SLRC s newsletter. 10. Reverend Lou Carlson did not have anything to report on engravings. 11. The CA Division was recognized for our donation to the Elm Springs Museum project and this was discussed by Cmdr. Cooley. 12. Finding a suitable charity project for our camp has been on our agenda for a couple of months and thanks to Gordon Bricken who suggested we bring Christmas gifts ranging from $15 - $20, unwrapped to our Christmas meeting in December and donate the gifts to the Orangewood Children s Home. Thanks again Gordon, I like the idea and we passed a motion to go forth with the project. 13. Gordon Bricken is also looking into the possibility of what we can do in regards to the VA Hospital. His contacts with the Elks and various organizations put him in position to help us find another suitable project. Gordon 14. We discussed the need of purchasing a Wall Tent for the camp s use. Generally, we decided against such a motion. 15. Reverend Lou Carlson made a short presentation on the new Vietnam Veterans Museum being established in Garden Grove. The Reverend is the CFO and General McCune is their president of the committee to establish this facility. The overall story has been published several times in the OC Register and is a working project with an expected completion date of about 2 years. We are proud of our long time members who are involved in these prestigious community activities. 16. We made plans to meet on Veteran s Day, November 11 th at our Monument at Santa Ana Cemetery. We will honor our veterans with a special emphasis upon our Confederate Ancestors. After this meeting, everyone will meet for lunch at Johnny Reb s in Orange. This tradition was started a couple of years ago and has proved to be very worthwhile and enjoyable. I hope y all will attend. 16a.We also made plans for another Christmas Party. This year we ll meet at Reverend Lou and Karen Carlson s new home in N.E. Santa Ana. The date is December 11 th at 1:00pm. We ll have a pot luck lunch and exchange gifts no more than $20. Bring a gift if you want to participate in

10 the gift giving; otherwise do show up and join us in the party and meeting. We had a great time last year and I expect no less this year. See the next newsletter. 17. We discussed the Guardian Program being suggested by headquarters. However, we decided that instead of having one person for every 2 or 3 graves, our camp typically oversees all the graves in Orange County and have done so for many years. The challenge is documenting the data for headquarters and compiling grave lists for our national database. This is also a work in process. Gordon Bricken has led the charge for documenting our Confederate Veterans buried in Orange County and is working on a special project to find suitable signage for CS Veterans; something that costs less than the signs created by the boy scouts years ago. 18. We enjoyed a presentation by our compatriot Ray Evans on his ancestor, William True Love. Ray s ancestor did time at Rock Island Prison; where a couple of my ancestors also did likewise. He discussed the elements of prison life and the technical aspects of being paroled, what that meant and why the US Government stopped prison exchanges. Many thanks to Ray for sharing his family history and the events involving prisoners some of whom became galvanized and went on to fight the Indians out west. 19. Cmdr. Cooley had the privilege of giving Uni Fosdyck a framed print of the Battleflag laced with Magnolia Flowers that he picked up while at the National Convention in Montgomery, Alabama. He also gave Ray Evans a packet of Confederate note cards as a token of appreciation for investing his time and resources into our meeting. 20. Gordon Bricken brought some books to give away and we had some fun with a raffle. Anne Evans won the book on Vicksburg where her ancestors served. Most notable though was the book that Gordon wanted our Chaplain to have; titled Christ in Camp, written about the Army of Northern Virginia and their accounts of sermons and religion while serving in the Confederate Army. That was a special treat for Reverend Carlson and he certainly appreciated the gesture by Gordon. Thanks Gordon!!! Thanks Lou!!! 21. We adjourned the meeting with a benediction by the Reverend Lou Carlson. 22. I believe we had 17 people in attendance including our guests. I hope everyone enjoyed the meeting as much as I did; and once again, it is up to us because no one will do this for us. We are the Sons of Confederate Veterans, tasked to honor our ancestors and tell the true history of the South.
