We follow practices and procedures that maximize the safety and well-being of children and youth while they are in our care. Taylor Manor Independence Day Celebration Wednesday, July 2, 1:30-2:30 pm (please arrive at Taylor Manor by 1 pm) Each year our church leads a wonderful Independence Day celebration for the residents of Taylor Manor. The program lasts one hour and includes singing of patriotic music led by the Presby Pickers, the Pledge of Allegiance (they love to see children participate) and sharing of snacks for participants and residents. Organizers of Taylor Manor and past participants speak of how much the residents (and themselves) enjoy the time! If you are interested in participating or providing snacks, please sign up in Welcome Center! This year, they've asked that we only provide lighter fare because of the timing. We will be providing snacks and dessert - can be sweet or sugar-free. Suggestions that they provided are chips & dip, veggies and dip, etc. They do ask that they do not include nuts. Senior Adult Potluck and Talent Show The VIP's (Very Important Presbyterians age 55 and up) will have a Potluck and Talent Show on Friday, July 11, at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend - even if you haven't attended a VIP event previously. 2 PC(USA) leaders issue pastoral letter to the church on Assembly s marriage actions June 19, 2014 To congregations of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.): Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Earlier today the 221st General Assembly (2014) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) approved a recommendation from its Civil Union and Marriage Issues Committee allowing for pastoral discretion to perform any such marriage they believe the Holy Spirit calls them to perform, where legal by state law. They also approved a recommendation to change language in the Book of Order to indicate that marriage involves a unique commitment between two people, traditionally a man and a woman. Both decisions came with much thought, discussion and prayer, and clearly the entire body that is the PC(USA) will be interpreting these actions for some time. Please know that the same triune God in whom we place our hope, faith and trust in is still in control, and that the Assembly s action today is the result of deep discernment to hear God s voice and discern God s will. We concur with the feelings expressed by Teaching Elder Commissioner Jeffrey Bridgeman, moderator of the Civil Union and Marriage Issues Committee, during his presentation to the Assembly. The apostle Paul tells us that ours is, in fact, the ministry of reconciliation as ambassadors of Christ, and he died for us so that we might be reconciled, that we might become reconcilers, Bridgeman said. In this season of both happiness and sadness over the Assembly s decisions, we call on you to remember the overflowing grace and love God gifts us with, and to take seriously our charge to bestow the same grace and love on one another. Helping out were Kathy Collins, Lois Gaines, Linder Jaeckels, Karen Morris, Peg Neil and Melissa Sevier. Not only did the kitchen get scoured and scrubbed, but Rena Elswick and Jerri Jo Tackett worked in the nursery to sanitize, organize and rearrange the nursery so it sparkles! Bill Dake power washed the kitchen floor mats using equipment provided by Toby Easter. The place looks greats thanks to these generous volunteers. "Trinket and Treasures" is just around the corner. Start your summer cleaning and set aside your leftovers for our sale. We are all about Re-use and Re-cycle! Volunteers needed to help with Children's Church The Christian Education Committee is looking for adults to help Jordan Molla with the children's activities during the 10 am church service. You don't have to plan any of the activities - just be there to help Jordan. If you are willing to volunteer ONE Sunday each quarter please complete the form in the bulletin and put it in the collection plate. CE will contact you to answer any questions and explain what is needed to make sure VPCs Safety Policies are followed. Golf continues but now we meet on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. at The Brook (Lex. Rd). We tee off pretty promptly, and that is about the only rule we follow. For more information contact Kristy Hamlin at How to support your church by Eating The Kroger Gift card fund raiser is one of the best ways to support the youth at VPC. You can support your church by eating a truly all- American idea! The program is simple: Buy a $25 gift card to Kroger from the youth group and use the card to buy groceries. Reload more money on the card at the service desk at Kroger or at the checkout register. Kroger tracks how much money is spent with the gift card and donates 4% to the youth group. Without spending any more money on groceries than you currently are, you can make a significant contribution to the youth group. In 2012 the youth group received $2,119. Heartstrings Shawl Ministry has beautiful handcrafted prayer shawls and chem caps to give to people who are suffering a health crisis, loss of a loved one or other personal hardship. If you know someone who would be touched by a prayer shawl, please contact Melissa Sevier or Lois Gaines. Prayer shawl request cards can be found in the literature rack in the Welcome Center, and next to the prayer shawl display in the sanctuary. Heartstrings is a ministry of the congregational care committee. Please see the shawl display in the front of the sanctuary. Home Communion The Elders of the church are now offering home communion the first Sunday of each month. If you would like to be served or know someone who would like to be served please notify Charlie at or Heychuz@aol.com or the church office or Melissa. Everybody needs a little help once in a while. VPC volunteers are ready to give you an occasional hand with small household projects, light outdoor tasks and even respite care. More than 35 Martha Ministers are ready to help with meals and transportation during illness, incapacitation or family crisis.
