1 The Ripple Volume 5, Issue 5 MAY 2013 WELCOME TO APPLE RIVER COMMUNITY CHURCH Reaching out to our community with Jesus love We welcome you and hope you will visit our church and join us in worshiping our Lord. CHURCH SERVICES Sunday, May 5 10:30am Worship /Children s Church Sunday, May 12 10:30am Worship/Children s Church Sunday, May 19 10:30am Worship/Children s Church Sunday, May 26 10:30am Worship/Children s Church 7:00p Sunday Night Live TECHNOLOGY Pastor Bruce Tanner When we expanded our facilities here at ARCC, one of the prominent features to be included was the sound booth. A large mixer board was installed, and new microphones were purchased, along with a computer. A huge screen was installed at the front of the church. The screen could be lowered and raised at the touch of a button. Song lyrics could then be projected onto that screen enabling people to sing without burying their faces in their hymnbooks. A couple of years ago the church acquired a website which enables church information to be broadcast throughout the world, on line. Recently a video camera has been installed. We are no longer limited to CD s, but now have the capability of producing DVD s of services which also can be broadcast via the internet. All of this new technology is almost more than some of us baby boomers and older citizens can absorb! As I struggle to understand and appreciate the modern marvels that have become so much a part of our church s operation, my mind goes back to the way things were. In my first little churches there were no amplification systems. If you wanted be heard, you talked a little louder. If people wanted to hear better, they would find seats nearer to the front of the church. We thought we were going hi-tech when we inherited a slide projecter that would also handle film strips. A record player provided the accompanying sound. When the old reel to reel tape recorders began to be replaced by the new fangled cassettes, we really thought that we were at the pinnacle of technology. In our church office today we have three modern copy machines. In my first church I found a broken down old mimeograph through which paper had to be fed one sheet at a time. To make mimeograph stencils, I would remove the ribbon from my manual typewriter and strike the keys hard. If I made mistakes, I would brush on finger nail polish and strike over. Removing the ink soaked stencils was always a dirty job, but it was part of the weekly routine if a church bulletin was to be produced. Back in the day, we had no or cell phones. If I wanted to make a phone call, I would walk over to the IGA store next door and use the dial phone there. When I wanted to take pictures, I used the little Polaroid Swinger that I had received as a college graduation gift. How we marveled at the way pictures could be developed without taking the film down to the drug store and waiting a week to get it back. Digital cameras had not even been thought of yet. Continued on Page 2 MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of Apple River Community Church is to glorify God by helping people to find Jesus and grow to be like him. OUR AFFILIATION Apple River Community Church is affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church of America (Forest Lake District).

Bruce & I would truly love to thank each of you, whether you prayed, sent a meal or card for my recovery after my hip replacement. These acts of kindness will never be forgotten. May our Heavenly Father bless each and every one of you. Love s, Pastor Bruce & Ginger Yes, there have been a lot of changes in the world of technology since I drove my old blue 62 Chevrolet up to Watson, Michigan for the first time. The car had no power steering or air conditioning, but it got me where I needed to go. I had to add oil every 500 miles, and I only got about 16 miles per gallon of gas. Gasoline only cost 36 cents a gallon in those days, and when you pulled up to a filling station an attendant was there to pump the gas, check your oil and wash your windshield. How times have changed! Looking back, it s hard to believe how things have evolved over the last 43 years that I have been a pastor. Some call it progress. I have my doubts about that. Thanks to technology, life is certainly easier than it used to be. We all enjoy the benefits that our electronic devices bring us. How dependent we have become on the fruits of technological evolution. So is modern technology our servant, or has it become our master? What do you think? I know that time marches on and that we cannot live in the past. Whether we like things the way they are or not does not change reality. But I cannot help but wistfully remember times when life was a lot simpler and a lot less cluttered with GPS s and surveillance cameras and the world wide web, and I-Pads, and Facebook, and Kindles and all the other technological advances that have become such a great part of modern life. 3 Volume 5, Issue 5 Page 3 BUILDING AGAIN? On Tuesday, April 2, the Executive Board along with Trustees and a Christian Education representative met to explore the possibility of expanding our facilities here at ARCC. The consensus was that we should consider adding a multipurpose area to the south if this would meet DNR approval. The present mound system would be replaced with holding tanks. The Christian Education representative expressed the need for space to accommodate youth activities. The need to expand the kitchen area was also discussed. Most agreed that we should not jump into building until a new pastor is on the scene and situated. It was pointed out, however, that building costs are expected to rise in the near future. Dan Lundgren was appointed head of the new building committee. He was directed to come back with preliminary plans for the new structure. When building starts, Dan will be the only person authorized to have direct contact with the builder in regard to changes etc. The final decision to build must be made by the congregation of ARCC. Another special meeting may be called for this purpose in the near future. WHITE CROSS Thursday, May 2, will be our WOMEN' S DAY. 9:30-12:30 will be White Cross. This will be our last White Cross for the winter. We will not meet for White Cross during June and July. So, Ladies, come and help us finish up some projects: fill a box of rolled bandages to ship to Tandala Hospital in Africa; finish some quilt tops and get them ready to tie later; work on stocking hats so we will have a good supply to give away next winter. 12:30-1:00 lunch, bring your own bag lunch. The coffee pot is always on. 1:00 Women's Ministries will have a business meeting. We will have election of officers for next fall, so come and be a part of our Women's Ministries. We will not have Women's Ministries during June, July and August, but watch for a date to have "Lunch Out" in June. Devotions and Dessert will follow. LADIES, COME AND BE A PART OF OUR DAY AS WE WORK TOGETHER AND PLAN FOR THE NEW YEAR. LADIES BIBLE STUDY May 9th is the final session of The Patriarchs using video sessions with Beth Moore. Discussion follows. Coming Soon to the Church Bulletin Board Marie will post a few pictures of her recent trip to Israel. It was a very informative tour, led by a pastor from Seattle along with a Messianic Jew guide. They both complimented one another with a lot of information and explained what happened at the sites visited, according to the Bible.

If you want to be a prayer warrior, please pick an apple off the board. Then take a leaf from the envelope at the bottom of the tree and write your name on it and pin it back on the board where you took the apple off. Do not tell the child you have their name. Pray as you are led. At the end of the year, let them know you have been praying for them, adding any words of encouragement you may have. This can be done in person or by mail. We would like to know which children are being prayed for and by whom. Please let Joanne McKinstry know in person, by phone , or by jmcdove@amerytel.net. Any questions may be directed to Joanne also. Peace and Blessings, The Prayer Ministry Steve Reed, Janet Dopkins, Joanne McKinstry MISSION UPDATE ARROWHEAD BIBLE CAMP The Evangelical Free Churches rented a camp established in 1939 near Chetek, WI. In 1976, they purchased a fishing resort and the camp moved to Chain Lake near New Auburn. The camp is about an hour drive from our church. The camp has 72 acres and 14 buildings. The Lodge is a home constructed in 1896 by a Civil War veteran. Year-round activities include kids camps, adult retreats, winter and family camps, discipleship training and craft weekends. Jeremiah Harder is the executive director. How can you help? 1. Donations of various materials and items 2. Money for scholarships 3. Time and work Memorial Day weekend is set aside for spring clean-up. Saturday is a work day, Sunday and Monday are for worship and recreation. If interested, call or info@abcamp.org Submitted by Judy Nelson, Missions Committee A Trip of a Lifetime to Israel By Marie Geist As many of you know, I toured Israel with my cousin and a group from her church in Seattle. The trip was very enlightening, interesting and spiritual. The tour was led by Pastor Steve and our guide, Mickey, a Messianic Jew originally from Russia. We arrived in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, April 9 and stayed in Caesarea, then spent 3 nights in a Kibbutz on the Sea of Galilee. We visited several places around the Sea of Galilee, and travelled to the northern border where we could see the site of Armageddon and heard shelling across the border in Syria. We saw a temple where Jesus preached, and Peter s house. At the Jordon River, 22 of our group of 46 were baptized. We went to the southern tip of Israel to the city of Eilat, and drove to the border of Egypt. We visited an exact replica of the tabernacle located in the desert, Masada, an oasis, and the Dead Sea Scrolls and location where they were found. We travelled to Jerusalem, stopping to take a dip in the Dead Sea. We spent four nights in Jerusalem, where there was a lot to see including the Mount of Olives, we walked on the streets Jesus walked on in Jerusalem, as some streets have the original stones. I also visited Jesus tomb, and we had communion nearby. We visited the holocaust museum. This is a brief summary of my trip as there was a lot to see to describe them all in this article. We returned home on Friday, April 19. Biblical and/or historical importance were explained at the sites. We had devotions at many of the sites. We had a special prayer for our guide and his family before he left us a day before our tour was over and another fellow filled in. Mickey s daughter is going into the military, and Mickey is away from his wife for two weeks at a time. The guide asked for prayers for Israel.
