1 Volume 22, Issue 3 Things/Words From Our Spiritual Leader Cantor Henry Shapiro We just entered into the 5th and final book of the Torah, Devarim. Now each book has it's own character or over-riding theme. Genesis tells the stories of creation and the patriarchs (and matriarchs), Exodus the emergence of the Israelite people, Leviticus the priestly rites and rituals and laws. Bamidbar continues with a mixture of laws and narrative as well as journeys in the wilderness. Deuteronomy, has a little bit of everything. Indeed, one of the traditional Hebrew phrases used to label the book is mishneh torah. This implies it's a summation of all the writings before it. The Hebrew name for the book, Devarim, comes from the opening, ayleh d varim Moshe, these are the words that Moses spoke (to the children of Israel). These words are a reminder of what has happened before with examples and instruction for when the people enter the land of Israel. The Hebrew root word, dvar, means two things. The first being of course, word or when used in the phrase Dvar Torah, an essay or talk on a Torah passage. The second meaning of dvar is thing or object. This seems like a curious connection, but something that makes sense when you think about it. Coming Events Friday Night Shabbat Services 6:00 PM Saturday Morning Shabbat Services 9:30 AM Rosh Hashannah Services Sept 9th at 8:00 PM Sept 10th at 8:30 AM Sept 11th at 8:30 AM Tashlich Sept 16th at 10 AM at B-Y Park in Trafford Yom Kippur Services Kol Nidre Sept 18th at 6:30 PM Sept 19th at 8:30 AM Mincha 5:45 PM Neilah 6:45 PM Shofar Blowing followed by Break-the-Fast at 7:55 PM Sukkot Services Sept 24th at 9:30 AM Sept 28th at 6:00 PM with Pizza in the Hut Shemini Atzeret Oct 1st w/yizkor during Torah Service 9:30 AM Simchat Torah Oct 1st - w/live music and refreshments! 6:00 PM See calendars for candle lighting times
2 We all have heard the cliche that there are 50 or 100 words for snow in the Eskimo language. That is true and it indicates that language can point to the importance of ideas to the culture and identity of a people. This double meaning of the Hebrew word dvar can be an interesting insight into Hebrew and Jewish thought. What connection does the idea of a physical object and something so ephemeral as a word have? The answer lies in the phrase, 'People of the Book'. The words and stories in the Torah have attained such importance, history, and meaning that they have solidified into something we can hold. The 1st four books of the Torah are said to be G-d s telling and the final book, Devarim, the telling of Moses. He is fixing the story and words into a lasting legacy that we can hold up thru the ages. There is one further thing to keep in mind as we read Devarim. When the people Israel finally enter the land of Israel, Moses does not continue the journey with them. He is now on his own spiritual journey. That is a good guide for us as we turn our thoughts from the mundane day-to-day to the upcoming High Holidays when we enter a new realm. Cantor Henry Shapiro /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Page 2
3 From the President s Desk.Robert E. Korfin The High Holy Days are almost upon us. We usually look at the new year with a spirit of renewal and anticipation for what the year holds in store for us. I don t feel that way this year. Over the past year we ve lost key members of our Parkway Family. No one can replace Leslie Rubin or Bernie Bernstein. They were in Shul every Friday and/or Saturday for Shabbat services. This past year we also lost Bob Zukerman, Micki Kessler, and Neil Blumenfeld. We re simply not the same here at Parkway. I used to tell people from other congregations in the city as well as the eastern suburbs that as small as we are at PJC, we have a minyan on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings; that isn t the case anymore. This past year we have gone week after week and month after month without a minyan. And it gets worse.people are not coming to shul when they have Yahrzeit for a loved one. It appears that many of our members have other priorities or simply don t have or make the time. Our membership has dropped due to illness and worse, which means our life s blood (money) is not coming in. Over the years I said and continue to say."something has got to give." So as we prepare for this High Holiday period, we are reaching a crossroads. There are questions and decisions that will have to be made. I have had my head in the sand too long. It s time to stand up and do whatever needs to be done. I promise to keep you informed along the way. Nothing loses the room more than when I say my thank-you s. So forgive me, but I must thank Diane Bloomfield, Hal Lederman, Charlie Rubin, Alan Levine and Michael Tell and of course Gail Levine; she s the glue that holds everything together at PJC. I hope and pray the New Year will be filled with good health, happiness and peace for all of us. And let us say.amen. Page 3
