1 June Sivan/Tammuz 5778 Rabbi: Ben-Zion Lanxner Phone: Fax: Congregation Agudath Jacob President: Brent demoville Office Admin: Karen Eason This bulletin is published twelve times per year by Congregation Agudath Jacob, a non-profit organization. Founded in 1888 * Celebrating 130 years * Member of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism Your Board of Directors Dear Members and Friends of Congregation Agudath Jacob, For this month s newsletter we would like to take this space to discuss different ways to make donations to Congregation Agudath Jacob that may, or may not, be familiar to you. Different synagogues do things differently, but most of what you will read here happens across all synagogues regardless of their affiliation. As all of you are aware, we raised our dues this year and we cannot thank you enough for stepping up and working with us. But dues alone do not pay our yearly expenses. We are so fortunate to have a wonderful full time Rabbi and a beautiful building, but our dwindling population and our decreasing income from dues makes it a real challenge on a month-to-month basis. We rely on the kindness of our members and friends for donations to help meet our shortfall. Here are some ways you can help. Did you know that when you are called to the Torah for an aliyah you can donate as little or as much as you would like, and no money is involved on Shabbat? The box next to the gabbi is for just such donations. It s very simple and all you do is quietly whisper what you would like to donate to the gabbi and he or she will make sure the donation is recorded to your account when the office is open. Aliyot include those who come to the Torah while it is being read and those who lift the Torah and those who wrap the Torah. Each of those are very important honors and it is our hope that it is meaningful enough to you to donate what you can. Again, we are fortunate that many of our members do that already. It is also customary at CAJ to send donations to people in memory of someone for a birthday or anniversary or in any way you would like to honor another person. These donations are documented in the bulletin, show community support, and are greatly appreciated by the people you are recognizing. To make these donations you just call or the office. While donations of money will always help our bottom line sometimes the most generous gift of all is your time. There are always things that need to be done at CAJ; all you need to do is ask how you can help. Finally, there have been some questions about donating to the Rabbi s Discretionary Fund and giving personally to the Rabbi. The Discretionary Fund is an account available to Rabbi Lanxner to use for charitable purposes. These funds do not benefit the rabbi directly. If you would like to donate directly to the Rabbi, there are traditional times when that is appropriate. Often Rabbi s go above and beyond expectations and those times should be recognized. It is customary to give the Rabbi a gift when he performs a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, a wedding, an unveiling, a funeral, a conversion, or any time he has done something personally for you and your family. This is just a way to thank the Rabbi personally. In these cases, you will give your funds directly to the Rabbi rather than to the shul. There are a lot of great things happening at Congregation Agudath Jacob. If you ever have any questions about anything that may not make sense, just ask! The Board of Directors and the Rabbi are happy to help. Brent demoville and Susan Silver

5 HOW TO OBSERVE THE YAHRZEIT It is traditional to kindle a Yahrzeit Candle in the home on the evening Yahrzeit begins. It should remain lighted until sunset the next day. Possible prayer before lighting a Yahrzeit candle: Eternal God, I/we light this candle in memory of (name), my/our beloved (relationship). The light of the flame rekindles all the warm memories of the moment we shared together and reassures me /us that a piece of his/her soul dwells in my/our heart(s) forever. May his/her soul be bound up with the bonds of eternal life. Amen. Candles are available at the Gift Shop. Every effort should be made to say Kaddish at congregational services. It is meritorious to perform some Mitzvah or to contribute to the synagogue in commemoration of the deceased.
