1 Today s chuckle: A big-city counterfeiter decided the best place to pass off his phony $18 bills would be in some small, out of the way, town. So, he hopped into his car and off he went. He found a tiny rural town with a single store. He entered the store and handed one of the bogus bills to the man behind the counter. "Can you change this for me, please?" he said. The store clerk looked at the $18 bill a short time, then smiled and told the man, "Sure, Mister. You want 2 nines or 3 sixes?" Song service Today s recipe: BAKED OVERGROWN SUMMER SQUASH Ingredients: 1 or 2 overgrown yellow summer squash, ends removed and halved long ways 2 small spoonfuls of butter per squash half 1 or 2 slices of white onion per squash half Extra-virgin olive oil Pam or other non-stick cooking spray Kosher or Sea Salt (regular table salt would be fine, too) Course ground black pepper Garlic and Parsley Powder Shredded or grated Parmesan cheese Instructions: Preheat the oven to 375. Make sure to thoroughly wash the squash halves, if you haven t done so already. Take a baking sheet or pan and place a layer of aluminum foil on the bottom. Spray the foil with Pam or another non-stick cooking spray. Place the squash halves on the baking sheet, side-by-side. Take a sharp knife and cut 4 or 5 slits in each squash half, long ways. Put two spoonfuls of butter on each squash half Lightly drizzle a little olive oil on each half; use a brush to lightly brush the oil across each squash half (In hindsight, it might be better to add the butter AFTER brushing on the olive oil) Place 1 or 2 onion slices on each half and sprinkle the halves with the Kosher salt, pepper, garlic and parsley powder. Sprinkle the shredded parmesan cheese on the halves until they are covered Place the baking pan into the oven and let cook until cheese has browned; usually minutes, depending on the size of the squash.

3 MONEY CAN T BUY EVERYTHING Tom was a 10-year-old boy. He was the only son of his parents. Tom s father was a very busy businessman who could not spend time with his son. He generally came home after Tom slept and was off to the office before Tom woke up in the morning. Poor Tom had a yen for his father s attention. He longed to go outdoors with his father and play with him in the yard just like his friends did. However, one day, Tom was stunned to see his father at home in the evening. Dad, it is a big surprise to see you at home, Tom said happily. Yes my dear son, my meeting was canceled. So I m at home. But after a couple of hours, I have to take a flight, his father replied. When will you be back? Tom asked. Tomorrow afternoon. his father replied. Tom was in deep thought for a while. After some time, he asked, Dad, how much do you earn in a year? Tom s father was bewildered at the question. He said, My dear son, it s a huge amount and you will not be able to understand it. Ok dad, are you happy with the amount you earn? Tom asked. Yes, my dear. I m very happy! In fact, I m planning to launch our new branch and a new business in a few months, replied his father. Tom was excited to know that and said, Yes, dad. I m happy to hear that. Can I ask you one more question? Yes, son, replied his dad. Dad, can you tell me how much you earn in a day or even half a day? Tom asked curiously. Tom, why are you asking this question? Tom s father was puzzled. But Tom was adamant. Please answer me. Can you please tell me how much you earn in an hour? Tom s father bowed out and replied, It will be around $25 per hour. At once, Tom ran to his room upstairs and came down with his piggy bank that contained his savings. Dad, I have $50 in my piggy bank. Can you spare two hours for me? I want to go to the beach and have dinner with you tomorrow evening. Can you please mark this on your schedule? With tears in his eyes Tom s father was speechless! He realized the greatest gift he could give his son was his time. 4 YOU ARE INVITED By Bill Spindler Roving Reporter When I receive an invitation to some event or dinner it makes me feel good and important enough to be considered by the hosts. I usually respond with an enthusiastic yes, full of joyful expectation! If I were to say no to the invite it would probably make the one who invited me wonder about my response. Is he ill? Is he traveling or does he have something against me? Every invitation deserves an answer, be it yea or nay. Relationships are important in our Christian life and need to be attended to at all times. Solomon says, if we are to have friends we must show ourselves friendly. (Prov.18:24) Answer our invitations? Yes! Yes! There is an outstanding invitation that we must answer for sure! It is from God our Creator. He says, Come unto Me, you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. (Mt.11:28) For various reasons many people choose not to answer this all important invitation! Love for the things of this world seems to have grabbed the attention of too many people! The lust of the flesh and eyes along with the pride of life occupy the thoughts of unbelievers continuously! Satan has blinded the eyes of these, our relatives and neighbors. They cannot see the blessings available in Christ Jesus nor feel the love of God! Their conscience has become hardened, ears and eyes closed to the greatest invitation! However, Jesus still invites, I stand at the door and knock. If ANYONE hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with me (Rev.3:20) IT TAKES COURAGE It takes strength to be firm, It takes courage to be gentle. It takes strength to conquer, It takes courage to surrender. It takes strength to be certain, It takes courage to have doubt. It takes strength to fit in, It takes courage to stand out. It takes strength to feel a friend's pain, It takes courage to feel your own pain. It takes strength to endure abuse, It takes courage to stop it. It takes strength to stand alone, It takes courage to lean on another. It takes strength to love, It takes courage to be loved. It takes strength to survive, It takes courage to live. Hebrews 3: 3 Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. 4 For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5 Moses was faithful as a servant in all God s house, testifying to what would be said in the future. 6 But Christ is faithful as a son over God s house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.

"Oh, how silly of me," says the person. I need it for a school project." I gave her one without thinking to ask what the project was. A few days later I was in her classroom for a parent-teacher meeting when I noticed my face pinned to a mural the students had created. The title of their project was: "The oldest thing in my house." ************************************ "Give me a sentence about a public servant," said a teacher. The small boy wrote: "The fireman came down the ladder pregnant." The teacher took the lad aside to correct him: "Don't you know what pregnant means?" she asked. "Sure," said the young boy confidently. "It means carrying a child." *********************************** A man joined the priesthood. The order he joined could not speak for seven years. Then they could only say 2 words. The first seven years passed and they went into a small room. His 2 word were "too cold". The next seven years passed and they took him back into the small room and his 2 words were "bad food". The next seven years passed they took him back into the small room and his 2 words were "I quit". "Good," they said, "all you have done is complain." 6 CAR STARTING 101 By John Kerr Sedentary Reporter As always, this article is intended to enlighten the readers with some spiritual insight. This article is also intended for one person in particular. She was visiting from Ohio last Sunday and noticed after our morning assembly that my car would not start. I got my Lithium Ion Jump Starter and Power Pack out of the trunk and hooked it up to my battery. The car started right away. This is a small battery pack that I originally picked up at Harbor Freight so I could carry it on my motorcycle. I charged it once and it has been fine ever since. I have used it at least half a dozen times. Every time I use it I think, This is one of the best bargains! Not only does it have the starter option, but it is equipped with an LED flashlight and a couple of USB ports to power electronics. Perhaps a bargain isn t so much of a bargain if we never use it. If an item just becomes something to store or one more thing to dust, is it really a bargain? What are some bargains we have received in the spiritual realm? Romans 12:3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. 4Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.
