SOME BOUNDARIES ARE PHYSICAL IN NATURE (rivers, mountain ranges, oceans, walls, etc.) SOME BOUNDARIES ARE CULTURAL (laws, language, economy, religion weather ) Some are legal BOUNDARIES CHANGE OVER TIME.

54 TEVYE - ON FACING CHANGE The collected writings of Sholem Aleichem provide a chronicle of a traditional family facing conflict. The conflict is caused in part by change in the world they lived in as well as generational change. The stories of Tevye s family provide timing and unity regarding his relationships with other residents of the village, his wife, daughters and their suitors as well as the changes occurring in his world such as: Pograms, Zionishm, Haskalah or Jewish renaissance, the beginning of Jewish socialism (Bund), early communism, Russian revolutionary movement, advances in technology, immigration to U.S. and/or back to Israel, as well technological changes, change from an agrarian to industrial society.
