Do Now Anti-semitism is defined as the hatred of Jews. What are some examples of anti-semitism that you can remember from history? Why do you think the Germans killed Jews in the Holocaust?

How Jews have related to others The relationship between Jewish people and people of other religions has been negative for a very long time, and has changed over time Polytheists like the Romans didn t like Jews very much because they claimed that their god was the only true god, and the Romans thought this was arrogant, since they recognized everyone s gods as being real Jews tended to keep to themselves, and be very shut off from other cultures, and so people viewed them with distrust and dislike When Christianity formed, there was tension between Jews and Christians, since some Christians held Jews responsible for the death of Jesus

Middle Ages Moving into the Middle Ages (or Medieval period), Christians believed some really strange things about Jews Some of these rumors were: That they used Christian children as sacrifices in their rituals That they had horns That Jews stole communion wafers (representing the body of Christ) to stick pins in it to torture Jesus That Jews smelled bad because they were demons, and if they didn t smell bad, they bathed in Christian blood to get rid of the smell They blamed the Jews for the plague, saying that Jews poisoned the wells. Fewer Jews actually got the plague because they were cleaner people And many other insane myths Because of these myths, countless Jews were killed by Christians

Late 19 th Century In the late 1800 s, pogroms (attacking Jews and Jewish homes and businesses) became a trend again in Eastern Europe Because of this, many Jews fled to larger cities where they were safer from angry, uneducated mobs of the countryside When concentrated in cities, however, they became more of a presence, and this eventually lead to anti- Semitism in the larger cities of Europe as well Since many Jews fled to Germany and nearby countries, this contributed directly to the Holocaust

Optional Video Pogrom from Fiddler on the Roof Beginning to 5:00

Why hatred of Jews? As previously mentioned, the origins of anti-semitism go back to polytheists believing they were arrogant, and the fact that they kept to themselves Later, the Christian belief that Jews killed Jesus made them a target of violence and distrust Historically, Jews have been known as skilled businessmen and tended to be relatively wealthy. This is partially because they did business amongst themselves, and because they were skilled bankers and Jewelers, etc. This led to jealousy and conspiracy theories about Jews cheating people, being cheap, or even making deals with the devil for money Even today, the stereotype of a Jew being cheap or good with money is very common

Change over time After the Holocaust, the country of Israel was created, essentially kicking Muslim citizens of Palestine out of their own land Since Christians from the United States, England, etc. supported the creation of Israel, mostly to benefit from having an ally in the Middle East, Christians attitude toward Jews began to change Christians and Jews now mostly get along, and instead have teamed up against Muslims such as those in Palestine Because of the creation of Israel, and the Israeli army s actions following the creation of taking even MORE land from Palestinians, many Muslims began to dislike both Jews and the Christians who supported them Some Muslim political leaders even officially deny that the Holocaust happened, out of disrespect for Jews, or suggest that it wasn t as bad as it is made out to be

Judaism Video This video features an inside look at a very unique branch of Ashkenazi Judaism called Hasidism (members are called Hasidic Jews) They are very exclusive of outsiders, don't usually socialize even with regular Jews There are communities of Hasidic Jews in Israel and the United States (particularly in New York City) Their clothing and religious practices are pretty much exactly the same as they were hundreds of years ago in Eastern Europe On a separate piece of paper (which will be turned in for a grade), make two columns: in one column, you will write down anything you see in the video that you recognize (any terms that you hear, rituals that you see, etc.); in the other column you will write down anything that seems unfamiliar

Judaism Poster Project Person 1: Explanation of the topic (what it is, important terms) Writing any words on the poster Person 2: Why is the topic important Drawing any images on the poster Poster must have: Title Explanation Section Importance Section At least 2 images Names & period on the back
