1 EDITION 01 JUNE 2015 Aspire Nazareth Community Maazine

2 Welcometo Aspire Nazareth Community Maazine Nazareth has many publications, includin our website, newsletter and Facebook paes. As a replacement to our classic Community and Graduates Newsletters, we are excited to introduce our new bi-annual maazine, Aspire! It is fresh, modern and will ive us a chance to share our news in more detail and with more colour. After much contemplation, we chose the name Aspire because we feel it best describes our Community in a number of ways. The name initially stemmed from the word Inspire, which was suested by Jon Cenko, our Assistant to the Principal Reliious Identity & Mission (APRIM). As Jon suested, our Community is inspired by Jesus of Nazareth and our five Patrons, St Catherine of Siena, St Dominic, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Catherine McAuley and Archbishop Oscar Romero. These leaders all have remarkable stories that span some 2000 years of church history, but they still continue to inspire us today as we walk in their footsteps. Upon thinkin about this, we realised that this inspiration creates an environment within our Community that is filled with aspirations! At Nazareth we aspire to be a place of welcome and connection. As a community we aspire to provide options and embrace a culture where everyone feels they are loved and are part of a family. We aspire to be a livin experience of the church s mission. We are committed to encourain excellence in whatever it is we aspire to achieve. Not only do we as a community aspire to be all these thins, but each and every one of us has our own aspirations in life. We all, as individuals, are aspirin to be confident people, who make a positive contribution to the world. Whether you are a student, a raduate, a staff member, a parent, or connected to us in another way, we hope that Nazareth provides you with the foundations to aspire to be whoever you want to be. We hope you enjoy readin and reflectin throuh the paes of the new Aspire Maazine SpecialThanks Special thanks to all those who responded to our request for help in namin the maazine. 3 InsideNews Mr Michael Dahl Director Principal sinsiht Mr Phil Lewis Secondary Campus Principal It is with a reat deal of pride that I launch our new Community Maazine, Aspire. As you read the maazine you will see that our Community has so much to share. We aspire to make Nazareth a community that meets the needs of all our members. A community where we feel accepted and where we can all be supported to reach our potential. The articles in our first maazine cover the many activities and accomplishments that have taken place over the last few months. Please take the time to read them and also to share all this ood news with your friends and families. While I have the opportunity, I want to touch on the culture of excellence that is very evident at Nazareth. Nazareth students do very well because they work effectively. They are well supported by our families and our staff who encourae them to develop ood habits. Our youn people are involved in school life and are committed to their studies, as is evident in this maazine, and they feel a sense of belonin. Students who are happy will achieve better outcomes and are more likely to stay connected at youn adults. Our 2014 results, as you will read, are a testament to this approach. Best wishes to our Secondary campus Youth Minister, Rose Whitehead. Rose will shortly depart for Timor-Leste where she will work for the next 6 weeks in the Triloka Health Clinics. She will be joined by a roup of staff and youn adults durin the July break. Conratulations to our Communications and Marketin staff that have the vision and talent to make this maazine a reality. Our staff consist of Madeleine Kitschke (Actin Director of Communications), Maddi Papantoniou and Victoria Richardson (Director of Communications), who is currently on maternity leave. Our Communications Team work hard to ensure that all that takes place at Nazareth is effectively communicated. We have a number of publications at Nazareth, includin our weekly newsletter, website, our Facebook paes, Collee handbooks and prospectus materials. Over the next few months you will see sinificant chanes to our website. It will have a fresh and excitin new look, improved ease of naviation and chanes in interactivity to enable the website to function more effectively on all devices. The number of people accessin our Facebook paes continues to row. The Marketin Team reularly add new photos and videos that enable you to witness first hand many activities that take place at Nazareth. I sincerely hope you enjoy this first edition of Apire and we look forward to hearin your feedback Welcome to the new format of the Nazareth maazine. You, as a friend, student, former student, staff member, former staff member, volunteer, or former volunteer of Nazareth, I hope you will find this publication a reat way to stay connected with us. Of course, there are social media sites, our website and weekly newsletters still available for you to keep in touch even more reularly. This year Nazareth Collee Secondary campus has been celebratin the amazin year 12 results over the last five years. In celebratin thouh, we are also aware that we need to explore and initiate ways to sustain these hih levels of achievement. Hence, staff this year have beun implementation of ischolaris as our new Learnin Manaement System. This will provide real time pastoral care records, attendance and student achievement data for teachers and students. Ultimately, by 2017 the system will also provide access for parents to enae in their child s learnin. Alon with buildin ischolaris for our Collee network, the campus will also be conductin a year 8-10 curriculum review and developin new performance standards for the same year levels. These important developments in teachin and learnin will ensure that all curriculum documents and requirements for the Australian Curriculum will be further enhanced. In addition to this work, Nazareth is also settin new directions for the future. Durin the year, students, staff and parents will be involved in the atherin of data to inform the strateic plan. This will be developed in line with the CESA Continuous Improvement Framework. This year has seen enormous rowth in co-curricular activities at Nazareth. Sport, music, debatin, chess and social justice activities all have many enthusiastic participants. All students involved are wonderful ambassadors of our Collee and it is fantastic to witness their passion to ive their best. The Joy of the Gospel has been our theme for I believe this captures the values and priorities of Nazareth as a Catholic community. Whilst we are a place of hih quality education, we are much more than just that. We are a place where people are iven somewhere to belon, a place where they are treated with justice, compassion and love. In all of our interactions we want people to experience respect, dinity and understandin. In ivin witness to the Gospel in our work, our hope is to ive joy to others in our Community. In his own life Jesus clearly showed us the dinity of work. When he lived on earth he was known as the carpenter s son and willinly worked with the tools of his trade. He made his work into a source of blessin. In doin our work well, we also build up God s creation and it enables us to practise charity and compassion. It is with a reat sense of pride that I encourae you to remain connected to Nazareth and celebrate all the achievements of our Community. As you will see throuhout this maazine, there are many ways to become involved Aspire The Nazareth Community Maazine Pae 5

5 AbsoluteExcellence 2014 raduate, Alexander Makarowsky, is one outstandin individual! On 27 May, at a ceremony held at St Marks Collee, we were very proud to see Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Hawker family member Hon David Hawker AO present Alex with a C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship. The C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship is one of the most enerous privately funded scholarships available to underraduate and post-raduate students in Australia. Since 1990 the Charles Allan Seymour Hawker Scholarship Trust Fund has awarded more than five million dollars to 109 youn Australians. Scholarships are offered to capable students of principle and character, who have demonstrated a commitment to the wider community. Selection is based on personal qualities as well as academic ability. Durin his time at Nazareth, Alex has been on a clear trajectory to absolute excellence, takin out many academic and excellence awards. Aside from Alex s outstandin academic achievements, he has also been a student who openly contributed to the Nazareth Community, throuh actively participatin in a wide variety of co-curricular activities. Alex aspires to chane the way we communicate with each other. He envisions buildin the protocols and networks which will allow every Australian to take full advantae of accessible, world class internet. He also foresees developin and implementin new communication technoloies to meet Australia s ever-rowin communication needs. He also aims to one day work for Enineers Without Borders Australia, to ive impoverished communities outside of Australia access to proper communications. Alex is destined to make a sinificant contribution on the world stae. He is a rare individual of exceptional talent and is a well deserved winner of a C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship. Alex, you are a true credit to our Community, conratulations! For more information visit Some eiht months ao, I near accidentally discovered the Charles Allen Seymour Hawker memorial scholarships. Valued at $60,000 and described as Australia s Rhodes Scholarship, I decided to apply, in one of the most serendipitously fortuitous moments of my life. C.A.S Hawker s life was both incredible and enthrallin. A South Australian solider, pastoralist and statesman, Hawker served with distinction in World War I, and then went on to serve his country in a number of other inspirin ways. The CAS Hawker memorial scholarships were established to perpetuate the leacy of Charles Allen Seymour Hawker by providin tertiary students with educational opportunities. Throuh such opportunities, Hawker scholars aspire to serve their country in a manner similar to C.A.S Hawker. I would like to thank Mr Tran, Mrs Arthur and the wider Nazareth Community for the references and experiences necessary to secure a Hawker scholarship. Three years of accommodation at St Mark s Collee is life-chanin: it is a world of friends, mentors, collee traditions, academic uidance and surprises. I am humbled and infinitely rateful for this fantastic opportunity. - Alex Makarowsky TakinAim Christine Farruia Year 3 teacher and Reliious Education Co-ordinator On Friday 15 May, a week after the second major earthquake hit Nepal, staff, students and parent volunteers at the Nazareth Primary campus athered on the oval for the Nepal Fun-Raiser. The aim was to create awareness and also raise funds throuh fun activities, brinin the whole community toether. Armed with colourful tape and water balloons, for a fee students were able to Tape the Principal to the Wall and Colour Balloon a Teacher. The line-ups for both these activities were endless! It was a very colourful lunch break as metres of coloured tape wase strapped across Michael Honey and hundreds of water balloons were hurled towards 10 brave staff members. It was delihtful to see so many of our students participate and show compassion for the people of Nepal. Such an event would not have been possible without the contributions of the fantastic parent volunteers, the Maintenance team, Nazareth staff members and the Communications team. It was a testimony to the wonderful Nazareth Community spirit. The Nepal Fun-Raiser raised an amazin $967 that was donated to this cause throuh Caritas. Further donations can be made throuh the Caritas website We encourae everyone to keep Nepal and its people in their prayers and thouhts Aspire The Nazareth Community Maazine Pae 9

6 I m so pleased with how the Fair all came toether. It was wonderful to see so many members of the Collee Community involved, both leadin up to and on the day, which contributed to a fun, well oranised, positive occasion for the whole community to enjoy. - Sonia Ellul ThePowerofCommunity The outstandin community involvement at our Fair perfectly exhibited the interest people have in bein a part of the Nazareth Catholic Community. It is what community is all about; spendin time toether and havin a ood time simply maical! On the sunny Sunday of 29 March 2015, Nazareth families and friends filled the parkin lots and nearby streets surroundin our Secondary campus for our very first Nazareth Community Fair! From all corners of our Community people flocked to the Fair to have fun, indule in reat food, be entertained and soak up the atmosphere of a truly maical day. It was a jam-packed afternoon of entertainment, with a hue number of stalls representin businesses and oranisations as diverse as our Community. While the day was a reat success, the whole Fair experience was reatly enhanced by the wonderful rane of stallholders and parent volunteers who ave up countless hours of their time to ensure the day was a stand-out event. One of the main draw cards for many people attendin the Fair was the chance to taste delicious international cuisines, whilst they socialised with friends and family. If it was not for our volunteers, these stalls would not have been possible. We were overwhelmed with the number of people we had offerin their help. Nazareth is such a diverse community from the Early Childhood Centre to the Primary, Secondary, Youn Adults and the Wise Owls roups. It was really excitin to see this hue Community come toether as one formidable team! Lauren Pryor, a 2012 raduate volunteered her time alon with a number of other old scholars to run the barbeque stall. The Nazareth Community Fair brouht toether such an array of committed people willin to offer their time to ensure an enjoyable and successful day for all. It was amazin to see the resourceful dynamics of all involved. The idea for the event was first discussed last year. Initially, it was thouht by many that the Community involvement may be low, and difficult to encourae. But wow, were they wron! Our first Community Fair was better than ever anticipated and well exceedin our wildest expectations. It is sure to become one of Nazareth s most beloved sinature events in the future The endless hours of volunteerin made a hue difference and, as many aree, these people were the real heroes of the event. For many months in advance, the Fair Committee lead by Mr Michael Honey, was holdin meetins behind the scenes, discussin, oranisin and plannin. They spent many nihts toether collatin donations, wrappin and packain prizes. The most impressive thin about the involvement was that it all came from love. It wasn t done because people felt they had to, but because they wanted to. I m so pleased with how the Fair all came toether. It was wonderful to see so many members of the Collee Community involved, both leadin up to and on the day, which contributed to a fun, well oranised, positive occasion for the whole community to enjoy - Sonia Ellul, a parent from the Fair Committee. Our Primary Campus Principal, Mr Michael Honey, was extremely proud and pleased with the turnout for the day. Aspire The Nazareth Community Maazine Pae 11

The roup stayed toether for 10 days, before leavin Nicole Carey and Sara Ucci (both third time Timor-Leste visitors) to stay on for a further five weeks. Sara and Nicole raduated from Nazareth Catholic Collee in Nicole and Sara conducted nutrition lessons and playroups in the local community. They also spent time assistin the Timorese with the new computers and administrative work. The Timorese were always eaer to learn, even thouh they had never used a computer before - Nicole Carey. In addition to their work, Nicole and Sara had plenty of time for bondin with the local Timorese. They shared Christmas with their host family in Baucau, celebratin Christmas Eve Mass with over 2,000 people at the local church. The Timorese Faith enhances their community. They have a real connection with each other and are always smilin. In spendin time with them we noticed two inspirin thins, their resilience and ratitude. Our challene back in Australia is to remain resilient and be rateful. - Sara Ucci. In term 1, Nazareth had the opportunity to host the West Torrens, Henley Beach and Kidman Park Rotarians for their intercity meetin. The evenin was a reat niht of sharin and relationship buildin. For the Nazareth Community it was an opportunity to update the Rotary members on the onoin work in Timor-Leste. Sara, Nicole and Michael Ucci had a chance to address the meetin and share the success of their recent trip to Timor- Leste. Everyone was delihted to hear about the installation of the computers and they were also thrilled to hear the story of how Sara and Nicole were present for the first birth at the new Maternity Clinic in Triloka. As well as an opportunity for storytellin, the meetin was a chance to thank the Rotary Clubs of West Torrens, Henley >> Beach and Kidman Park for their partnership and for all they have done for the Nazareth Outreach Projects. Without their consistent support and financial aid, Nazareth would not be accomplishin such reat developments in Timor-Leste. The Nazareth Community is extremely rateful to have received kind donations from the three Rotary clubs, totallin $3,100! This donation will reatly assist in reachin fundraisin tarets for this year: - A fourth container of equipment to be shipped - The construction of another community buildin - Refurbishment of the Doctor s surery in Triloka - A second 4WD vehicle - A lare electricity enerator A fourth roup of Nazareth staff and raduate volunteers are currently preparin to travel to Triloka in July For more information about Nazareth Outreach Work, please visit the NOW Facebook pae: Our challene back in Australia is to remain resilient and be rateful Aspire The Nazareth Community Maazine Pae 13

The chanes to the ECC outdoor learnin space has enabled children to draw on their imainations and creativity. Staff carefully and constantly monitor children s connections with each other and the environment, in order to see what we can develop next. We have consciously and deliberately developed areas that encourae children to be risky in a safe environment. If a child is never able to have-a-o, stretch their limits or o out on a limb, how do they learn to deal with all that life throws at us? At the ECC we believe we need to offer children many and varied experiences. Our oal is to develop their physical skills, mathematical and lanuae abilities, their spiritual side and ultimately encourae them to flourish. Rooms have worked throuh many topics this year and below you will see a snap shot of the reat learnin opportunities the staff have planned and provided. In the MacKillop Room, our babies have taken on a worm farm project. They seem to have an innate ability to handle the worms without squealin. We just need to keep a close eye on them to make sure the worms don t end up bein mornin tea! They make a maic compost juice which they share with the Romero Room, who are busy settin up our arden beds. Their project From Plot to Plate hihlihts the joy of ardenin as well as the ability to be self-sufficient. Our three year olds in the Dominic Room are thrivin on Tuesday music day. They love learnin about instruments, conductin and of course makin lots of loud musical noise! To bein this project they sanded back and painted a uitar, they ve restrun it, tuned it and now are enjoyin sinin alon. Our toddlers in the McAuley Room and Catherine Room have settled in well and have been focusin on creatin homely environments where the children feel comfortable and supported to learn new skills. 9 Playroup At Nazareth, our Playroup team is focussed on facilitatin playroups for families in our Community. We understand that playroups offer an invaluable experience, filled with opportunities to learn and be connected. Over the last few years our Playroups have rown and developed to become a huely popular weekly proram that many adore. This year we have welcomed a wide rane of new families, seen the inclusion of Sister Amelia and Sharon Ferdinands to the Playroup leadership team, and have experimented with a new format which focusses on different areas of development for children. As part of this new format, we have beun oranisin our activities based around a weekly theme. These themes ive our children an opportunity to learn about a rane of areas throuh an interated approach to learnin. Research on how the brain works and how we learn suests that the use of themes helps youn children achieve hiher levels of learnin. Some of the themes we have focussed on this year so far include superheroes, shapes, on the farm, multicultural Australia and winter. Our playroups have been set up in a way that provides specific play areas for children, offerin them a reater rane of activities and more opportunity to develop their skills. These areas include the followin: WiseOwls Our Wise Owls play a very important role in our unique Community. 11 LestWeForet Madeleine Kunel Year 12 - Catherine ReachinourIdeals Mrs Jan Bate Community Development Co-ordinator Bein familiar with our Nazareth vision of We are a Catholic community of welcome, connectin faith, family and education we may well ask what that really looks like for every member of this wonderful Community. The responses may be as diverse as the Community, however there are some key questions as well as indicators that tell us that people are experiencin a Catholic community in a way that causes them to live their lives differently. How does each and every person know and understand that they matter? That they are loved unconditionally? Not everyone would be aware that every time someone in our Community experiences bereavement, Sister Theresa sends them a personal card as well as followin it up with a telephone call or visit. Whenever a family is oin throuh a touh time, there is a freezer full of home cooked meals prepared by Nazareth families for delivery for as lon as they need. In the countless ways that families need supportin from time to time, there are skilled Nazareth staff ready to do what they can to offer that support for as lon as it takes, or to connect them with someone else who can help. There are a myriad of community prorams that say to the Community you are important. Whether you are a tiny baby just beinnin your journey or a Wise Owl takin every opportunity to be active and vibrant members of the Nazareth Community. Everyone in our Community is aware of and contributes to our outreach work in Timor-Leste and Bathurst Island. We are rihtly proud of this enerous work that we do, but even more sinificant is the fact that our hearts row and are somehow chaned throuh enterin the lives of people in these communities on their terms. Each student at the Collee is identified as an individual to achieve excellence in his/her own riht. The five habits of excellence have been defined as oals and indicators of the proress towards achievin each student s personal aim, individually and as a community. The Nazareth Community celebrates these achievements, but more importantly every person plays a role in helpin each student towards them. We see volunteers mentorin students in Primary and Secondary homework clubs and youn adult past scholars tutorin students in their own time or coachin sports teams. All stayin connected with the Community. Our Nazareth Collee staff o well and truly above and beyond ordinary means to ensure that these ideals are reached. We celebrate many events in our monthly youn adult masses at Flinders Park and family masses at the Our Lady of the Maner Church at Findon The ANZACs are an interal part of Australian and New Zealand history. The courae and bravery of the soldiers, who made the ultimate sacrifice for the benefit of our country, outline the true spirit of past Australians. As I have learned, this spirit remains in the hearts and stories of many youn Australians today. Rememberin the ANZACs is so important, not only to commemorate the actions of those who risked everythin for our country, but to be thankful for the privileed life so many of us take now take for ranted. The 2015 Dawn Service was a special occasion markin the centenary of the Gallipoli landin. It was the first Dawn Service I have attended and I was proud to see so many people, youn and old, athered to pay their respects. I feel honoured to have attended this sinificant occasion and I am proud to be part of such a reat nation. Furthermore, the ANZAC litury held at the Nazareth Secondary campus was a reat way to involve all students in the ANZAC spirit. Hearin some of the war stories from reat randdauhters and randsons of veterans was an emotional experience. This showed how the ANZACs stories live on in the hearts of present Australians. I was also lucky enouh to be part of the unveilin of the new Nazareth ANZAC plaque, which is situated near the Secondary campus Chapel. This new memorial will serve as a constant reminder of our history and help us to stay connected with the past. Commemoratin the ANZACs will help us do our best to prevent such horrific events from repeatin. It was reat to have the support and commitment of a vast number of our raduates at our Community Fair. The event was a reat success, with proceeds raised oin towards the Collee. Youn Adults continue to be connected within the Nazareth Community by their willinness to coach and assist the school sports proram and the still expandin volunteer tutorin proram. A major focus of involvement from our most recent raduates has been providin tutorin for our year 12 students, particularly with the research projects. At the conclusion of term 1, the Youn Adult Workin Party held the first reunion for our 2014 raduates at the Ramsate for the past students to reconnect and relive some of their memories at Nazareth, as well as an opportunity to create new memories and speak with the Secondary teachin staff about their plans for the future. Later in July a number of our youn adults will participate in our 2015 project to Timor-Leste. With the trip only around the corner, the roup are involved in a number of fundraisers and events. The Youn Adult Workin Party has continued to achieve and provide opportunities for the raduatin students to maintain a stron connection to the Nazareth Catholic Community. I invite all raduates to make their connection within the Nazareth Community. If you are interested in bein involved in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me on or via at emma.zanardo@nazareth.catholic.edu.au. I look forward to hopefully workin with you in the near future 6 Joseph Punturieri & Andrew Puccio 2013 Graduates There is an abundance of ways raduates can stay connected to the Nazareth Catholic Community. Since we both raduated in 2013, we have enjoyed comin back to the Collee to work as sports coaches. Last year, we spent our first year as coaches workin with the Junior Girls 8/9 Soccer Team. We were able to develop a squad of irls who had never played soccer, into a collectively stron team who later developed skills, experience and love for the ame. 1 3 Sport is very rewardin; equally for the coaches as it is for the players. Our ambition from the season openin ame was to build a squad that was able to work hard, motivate each other and enerally have a positive attitude. A famous coach once stated The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand. This quote underpins our season, as the team worked hard throuh all trainins and fouht hard throuh every minute of every ame, knowin that sooner or later success was comin their way. Last year our team ended up winnin the Team of the Year award and deserved it immensely. We are very proud of their work, and look forward to achievin even reater heihts this year 2 7 Picture 1: Cindy Lam, Rebecca Maio and Leela Balin at the Class of 2014 Ramsate reunion. 13 BessieNuk Siena Girls Collee: PeterD Alfonso Nazareth Catholic Collee: Bessie Nuk (formally Lian) is livin in Canada with her beautiful family. She is now manain her own very successful business in the enineerin industry. Is currently studyin abroad in Los Aneles, doin a Bachelor Of Fine Arts in Actin for Film at the New York Film Academy. Where are they now? Where are they now? I attended Siena Collee from 1991 to In my senior year when it was time to decide which courses to pick for University, I didn t have a clear idea what I wanted to do or be. One of the most vivid memories I have was receivin career counsellin from Mr. Potter, who captured my imaination with amazin teachin. He asked me which subjects I enjoyed at the time, to which I answered chemistry and maths. After some discussion he encouraed me to look into enineerin to see if it piqued my interest. Before that day I hadn t even thouht of bein an enineer and as it turned out I went on to study Chemical Enineerin at the University of Adelaide. Enineerin has been a wonderful tool kit that I ve drawn on for so many aspects of my professional and personal life. After receivin my deree, I worked for the South Australian Government for a few years, helpin to promote trade in the resources and minin industry. I aspired to broaden my horizon, ain some practical field experience and have the opportunity to travel so I started lookin for positions overseas. Husky Enery in Alberta, Canada hired me as a Pipeline Enineer and before I knew it I d packed my bas and flew half way across the world to a very small oil town called Lloydminster. This move was the hardest and also probably the best thin I ve ever done in my life. Leavin home in the middle of an Australian summer I found myself standin on the landin strip at -42c on a cold Canadian winter day. I was very fortunate to meet my husband Gre, also an enineer, in Lloydminster. After savin up and workin for some time, we took a year off to travel and eventually settled down in the city of Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Then it was time to start our own company called Millstream Fabrication where we desin and sell equipment to the Canadian enery industry and manufacture in Asia. These days you will find me busy lookin after our 1-year-old son Ethan and workin part time for our company. My family are all still back in Adelaide and we come home to visit at least once a year. It is hard to believe that this year marks the 20th anniversary of my hih school raduation. Back in 2007 I started the Siena Facebook roup (you can find it under Siena Collee ) as a way to reconnect with friends and old classmates. Since then close to 1100 old scholars have joined the roup from all different raduatin years. It is a reat way for us Siena irls to share and reminisce our hih school stories and what those times meant to us. One of my fondest school memories is takin a photo of the Lab coffee roup in my last week of school in 1995 (see photo 4, p 26). Everyone in this photo contributed so much to my education and influenced my life one way or another. Mrs Illman, Mrs Gaffney, Mrs Larson, Mr Reinke and Mr Potter. Thank you all! Nazareth has been like a second home to me since it formed in I oriinally attended Mater Christi Primary School which then mered to create Nazareth. I continued on throuh secondary school at Nazareth and raduated in Since Nazareth, I have created, directed and starred in my own drama production called Potter, which is a parody of the popular book and film series Harry Potter. This year, with the help of other fellow Nazareth students and friends (Carli Stasinopoulos, Maddie Summers, Jemma Douan and Elena Aloi) we brouht this production to the Adelaide Frine. It was a rain success, sellin out all three of our scheduled shows and we had to add a bonus show to keep up with the popular demand. We were amazed at the reviews we ot from not only audience members but from professional reviewers such as Rip It Up and Weekend Notes who absolutely loved it! Althouh it is very hard work I have always been interested in the performin arts and film industries. I don t remember there bein an actual start to my love for film and theatre, it s just always been there. Drama classes at Nazareth helped me enormously to ain confidence and learn new techniques that helped develop my actin skills. Durin year 12 I eventually had to think about how I could continue doin what I love, which is actin. I looked at the courses that our Adelaide Universities had to offer and althouh there were some amazin courses, there was nothin that felt riht for me. After realisin this, I decided to broaden my search and eventually found a film school located in Los Aneles called the New York Film Academy. After a lon application process that required three pae essays, recommendation letters and a creative portfolio showcasin my actin abilities, the Board of Directors at the New York Film Academy notified me that I had been accepted into the Bachelor Of Fine Arts in Actin for Film! I was beside myself and so honoured to have been selected out of all the applicants worldwide, to be placed into a class of only 20 people. I know there are many students currently at Nazareth who love the performin arts and I hihly recommend the New York Film Academy if you wish to pursue a career in the theatre or the film industry. Since I bean in May this year I have been havin an absolute ball and I am so happy to be fulfillin my dream of doin what I love! Althouh I am attendin the Los Aneles campus, the New York Film Academy also has campuses located in Queensland and Sydney for those who can t travel across the world. For more information on the courses offered at NYFA you can visit their website and put in a request for information. I would like to personally thank not only the amazin drama teachers at Nazareth who helped me throuhout my school years, but also the entire Nazareth Community. Without everyone s support I would never have had the chance or ability to continue actin after school Aspire The Nazareth Community Maazine Pae 25
