New Hebrew students are placed in the appropriate class level, from 1 to 4, after takin a placement test at the beinnin of the year. Hebrew students enjoy fun online ames with their NETA loin (can be played at school or at home), immersive classroom conversation and learnin, and one-on-one time with our Hebrew coordinator throuhout the year. With two Steeltown teachin artists and Rabbi Ron Symons, explore the makin of a movie behind the camera, developin your skills in shootin, editin and unfoldin a story. Tell your own story of Jewish Pittsburh, completin the class with your own movie short. Rabbi Ron Symons and Steeltown Teachin Artists new Prorams PUSH: Persons Undertakin Solvin Huner More than 174,000 individuals suffer from food insecurity in Alleheny County alone, includin more than 41,000 children. How can you personally make a difference for hunry people in our community with reater impact than donatin canned food? With PUSH, alonside local experts, lobby local officials to support public policies chanes that help those who are food insecure. Work in partnership with Just Harvest and the Squirrel Hill Community Food Pantry; meet real local policymakers at the local, state and reional levels; and fiht for chane. Openin Town Hall Tuesday, September 13 6:30 pm on the Second Floor Teen Leaders: Izzy Seel & Alana Yoffee Monthly Sessions Race and Faith: Meetin the People and Ideas in Our Community Become a part of a better America by buildin brides with others in our community. With all of the national talk of America needin to unify beyond our race and faith differences, take the time to meet with community leaders across a variety of churches and a mosque in reater Pittsburh. Learn about other reliions by meetin them in person, and travellin to their place of worship. In between visits, we will explore these communities and discuss questions over dinner toether on the Second Floor. Rabbi Ron Symons Thursdays,5:30-7:00 p.m. (Dinner Provided) September 22, 29 October 6, 13, 20, 27 November 3, 10 This Is A Story About a Hill A select roup of Jewish teens will be invited to participate in a powerful new cohort with teens from the nearby Hill District, a neihborhood still recoverin from major economic downturn after the buildin of the Civic Arena there in the 1960s and formerly the home of the Jewish Community Center. This cohort will be launched to explore true, rivetin stories about Jewish and African-American Pittsburh, and the elders who tell them. Visit sinificant local neihborhoods, includin the East End, East Liberty, Squirrel Hill, and the Hill District, and see local archives of Jewish and African-American history. Toether, ask powerful questions: how do communities share space? How do communities chane? Who tells those stories? How do we know another, and define ourselves? September 18 The Imainary Sukkah: The Talmud & Modern Architecture with Ben Schachter Our saes provided extensive instructions to build a sukkah. They had lots of crazy ideas for sukkot with "bent walls," buildin sukkahs on waons, and other unusual materials. Contemporary Architecture is really no different architects can imaine almost whatever they want: tiny houses, houses-as-machines, and even diital houses. If you imained like the rabbis did what kind of dwellins miht you desin? This creative workshop blends rabbinic and architectural thinkin. Materials, such as balsa wood, wire, foam core and sandpaper, will be provided to build real architectural models of fanciful and imainary structures. Make Your Own Mizrach with the Union Project A mizrach is the eastern wall, or also a creative piece of art which shows the direction to Israel. Do We Need Oranized Reliion? with Carolyn Gerecht Surely, we don t need to be members of an oranization to become better people or to make a difference in the world. So what s the point of oranized reliion? Debate a variety of texts, includin Jewish and academic understandins of reliion in the modern world, to answer the question: should we be oranized? Current Events with October 16 Israeli Salatim Cookin with Casey Weiss Try your hand at makin Israeli-style pickled veetables, hummus, uacamole, and dips, and discuss how salatim reflect Israeli culture. Empty Bowls with the Union Project Create a ceramic bowl for Empty Bowls, an annual community meal held in Pittsburh each year which typically attracts more than 1,500 people. All proceeds from the event (a simple meal of soup and bread, served from handmade bowls) benefit Just Harvest and the Greater Pittsburh Community Food Bank, local huner relief oranizations. Hear from the teens involved in this year s event, and find out how you can et involved, too. Requires 2 passes. 11:20 am-12:45 pm. Take a tour of Pittsburh s brand-new community mikveh (opened in Sprin 2016), and explore this very special, fascinatin, and holy ritual up close. Conversation Hebrew: The Presidential Election Practice your Hebrew informally in a Café Ivrit (Hebrew café) settin on the Second Floor, while discussin the upcomin U.S. Presidential Election. Learn new, relevant vocabulary words in a fun settin, while workin on (or showin off!) your skills in casual Hebrew conversation. Delicious snacks and coffee will be provided. With surfin, you kind of jump. These words from Etar Keret, one of Israel s most famous short story writers, capture the feelin that a short story often leaves you with like you ve just run out of time. How does this unique medium capture the hearts and minds of Israelis (and Jews)? Read sad, funny, and poinant short stories that turn and turn the prism of Israel. Arts and Writin of the Shoah Flares of Memory, published in 2001, illuminates the stories of more than 40 survivors of the Shoah (Holocaust), who were in their teens and 20s when traedy interrupted their lives. Created throuh a series of writin workshops by the Holocaust Center of Pittsburh, the hauntin narratives draw the reader in to contemplate their resilience, pain, scarred identities and their flares of childhood memory. By readin these stories, and also examinin other poinant arts and writin of the Shoah (includin music, Elie Wiesel s Niht, poetry, and other stories), see the Shoah not only in the paes of a textbook, but throuh the eyes of its survivors. Students will also take a tour of the new Holocaust Center of Pittsburh, and hear from a survivor. Service Learnin with J-Serve Steerin Committee For members of the 2017 J-Serve Steerin Committee. Enae with Jewish texts and learn about issues in our community, and then plan and implement the educational components of J-Serve Pittsburh, the larest teen community service event of the year. Open rehearsal: Sunday, September 11, 4:30-6 pm Teen Leadership Council Teen Leadership Council is a body of youth roup leaders representin more than ten Jewish teen oranizations from around reater Pittsburh. The council meets periodically throuhout the year, comin toether to build relationships, support each other and learn toether. Certificate in Elementary Jewish Education Take your teachin experience to the next level, and receive a stipend for your specialized trainin in elementary Jewish education (learnin many skills that apply beyond the Jewish classroom). For any teen workin as a madrich/ah in a local reliious school, develop educational skills by explorin classroom manaement techniques, learnin to support children with special needs, and desinin effective lesson plans for elementary school. At the end of the class, desin and execute your own lesson plan in your reliious school classroom and receive a Certificate in Elementary Jewish Education for your resume (hint: et a boost findin a job in a reliious school classroom in collee, where you ll make more money per hour teachin than your roommate miht make at a retail store.)
