1 SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2017 Chandler Center Newsletter Christie Ethington-Center Manager* *137 W. French Place, San Antonio, TX Reopening of the Chandler Center Date to be announced in 2018 The Historic Chandler Center in San Antonio, TX Celebrating Labor Day September 4 Grandparent's Day September 10 World Gratitude Day September 21 Good Neighbor Day September 28 World Smile Day October 6 Fire Prevention Day October 9 Halloween October 31 Morningside Ministries at Chandler Estate is home to the Chandler Center, an active adult community center. The Chandler Center in the historic Monte Vista area is open to anyone in the community who is 55 years of age or older. Participants and senior living residents enjoy recreational and social opportunities including educational presentations, cultural enrichment classes, workshops and lectures. Lunches are served daily to residents and members in a spacious dining room. The Senior Center is housed in the original Victorian home of Mr. & Mrs. E. B. Chandler built in According to the book, San Antonio s Monte Vista, the Chandler House can truthfully be called one of the show places of Texas. One of the unique features is the detailed wood carvings found throughout the entire mansion, hand-made by Mrs. Chandler herself. As visitors enter the center, the deephued wood-paneled walls and beautiful parquet flooring stand out. On the left, the Stanley Banks Parlor is an intimate sitting room framed with beautiful stained-glass windows. To the right, the screened-in Palm Room is an open and airy room for reading or table games. Numerous upstairs rooms are suitable for meetings and events. The large wrap-around porch is ideal for viewing those beautiful San Antonio days.

I have worked at Morningside Ministries for seven years as an Activity Director, in all levels of care at all three campuses. I ve been married for thirty years, to my wonderful husband Ron and I have two boys, Travis and Tyler. For the past eleven years, I have been Librarian and Historian at First Baptist Church San Antonio, which is one hundred and fifty-six years old, located in the downtown area. I love history, and I am a big genealogy enthusiast. In my spare time, I do research on my family tree. I have deep Texas roots reaching back to my third great grandfather, who was one of the first Hispanic Texas Rangers, he built a church in 1882 that is still standing in Bandera, TX, and it is noted as a Texas Historical Marker. I love to travel with my mom, seventy-five years young, we starting doing mother/daughter adventure trips to feed our need to see new places, in December 2015 we took a seven-day cruise to the Western Caribbean Islands. As the Center Manager, I extend my warmth and commitment to the residents and community of Chandler Estate. 4 Did you Know? Calling All Rock Hounds September Birthdays In astrology, those born from September 1 22 are Virgos. Detail-oriented Virgos have a deep sense of humanity, a trait that makes them careful, tender, and practical. Since all that attention to detail is put into the service of others, Virgos make perfect humanitarians. Those born between September balance the scales of Libra. Libra epitomizes fairness and harmony in all dealings large and small. Sincere, beautiful, and romantic, Libra will work hard to keep all relationships on an even keel with boundless grace and charm. Chandler Resident's Birthday's Jay B. Sept 8th Martha P. Sept 16th Melva B. Sept 29 th October Birthdays In astrology, those born from October 1 to 22 balance the scales of Libra. Libra epitomizes fairness and harmony in all dealings large and small. Sincere, beautiful, and romantic, Libra will work hard to keep all relationships on an even keel with boundless grace and charm. Those born between October 23 and 31 are Scorpios. Scorpios are passionate, deep, and intense, qualities that help them counsel others in deep and meaningful ways. Resourceful and determined, Scorpios give their all when it comes to following their hearts. Chandler Resident's Birthday's Harold A. Oct. 5th Robert P. Oct. 7th Herminia R. Oct. 8th September 16 offers a holiday for all the rock hounds, from the professional geologist to the casual collector at the beach. It s Collect Rocks Day! What s the attraction to collecting rocks? For many, it s the incredible diversity of rocks in the natural world. Not only do many rocks look different but they are formed by different geological processes that give us clues to the geologic history of the area they are found in. Half the fun of rock collecting is identifying and cataloging your rocks by kind, where you found them, and why they re special to you. Minerals, crystals, and gemstones are often admired for their brilliant colors, shapes, and structures. But many of the best rocks in a collection is judged valuable not because they are gemstones or minerals but because they were found someplace meaningful: on a vacation, perhaps, or on a trip with someone special. Whether you adore igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic, you ll never grow tired of the amazing diversity of rocks out there just waiting to be found. Slovenian Cow Belles In Slovenia s Bohinj Valley, cows are the real belles of the ball on the third Sunday in September. After spending the summer eating their fill in the fertile upland pastures, the cows return to their winter homes in the valley below with great fanfare known as the Cows Ball. The cows are decked out in beautiful wreaths and paraded through the village by local herders, cheese makers, and milkmaids. The cows don t have all the fun humans enjoy live Slovenian folk music and dancing, as well as competitions in log sawing, horseshoe-throwing, and shooting. The entire celebration is laid out at the edge of Lake Bohinj, a beautiful alpine lake surrounded by snowcapped mountain peaks reminiscent of The Sound of Music. These hills, too, are alive, but with the sound of mooing.
