1 October 2012 Dr. Larry W. Leonard District Superintendent MISSION, STRATEGY, FOLLOW-THROUGH Over the past three weeks as I have driven across the Tennessee District, I have watched the green foliage on our majestic landscape become outlined in scarlet and gold. October is here with its annual reminder that as winter approaches, time is quickly passing. It prods us to realize that the Tennessee District has completed one-third of our fiscal year. As we begin the second third of our church year, our thoughts should turn to following through on the mission and strategy proposed in the vision report of the district superintendent at our district assembly this summer. We must remain focused on the five proposed strategies to assure the success of our mission: 1. Partnership Connections: The Tennessee District Ministry Resource Center has intentionally partnered with Columbia Grace in the launch of Restoration Community Church of the Nazarene, our district s newest church in Spring Hill. In September, Columbia Grace celebrated the sending of Pastor Derek Hunter and people who will work together in this new church plant. The district has announced that our three Cuba Work & Witness teams, made up of local church laypersons and pastors, will go to Cuba December 4-11, 2012; February 19-27, 2013; and March 5-13, The December team has 18 confirmed members. Two of our churches are considering a new partnership of sharing one pastor. Many of our churches are renewing last year s partnerships and beginning new ones. 2. Local Leadership Development: Your district superintendent and assistant district superintendent finished the Tennessee District Mission Area Tour for fall 2012 on Tuesday night, October 2. Attendance and enthusiasm were encouraging. Local churches were equipped with a Prayer Partner Ministry System to adapt to their needs for an organized prayer ministry. 3. Passion for a Connectional Church: I have been thrilled with the renewed love for and involvement in our denomination by our local churches. Many are making plans to attend General Assembly next June in Indianapolis. The relationship with global Nazarenes is being strengthened as our churches are preparing to pay 100 percent of our contributions to others through the budget system. One pastor told me last week that his church board, who had been very opposed to the idea of sending money away from the local needs, has voted unanimously to pay their fair share of 14 percent in full. God is really helping his church. 4. Pastor s Personal Soul Care: With a continued focus on our pastors spiritual wellbeing, pastors are preparing to attend the Soul Care Conference at Camp Garner Creek November 5-6. Rev. Rick Underwood, director of Journey Counseling Center at Trevecca Community Church, will lead us in an examination of The Inner Life of the Pastor. I am anticipating a great gathering of pastors and staff members for this time of personal growth. 5. Proclaiming Scriptural Holiness: Once again Dr. Gary Hencke has inspired, challenged, and informed us of our holiness heritage in Being a Wesleyan: The Essential Distinctive For Our Day. We continue to sharpen our pastors skills to preach the holiness doctrine. You have been active and enthusiastic in your involvement as team members. God has blessed the first third of the year. Please join me in praying and participating in the privilege of ministry together for these next eight months. Connected to hope, Larry W. Leonard

3 NMI: Nazarene Missions International Mrs. Becky Hancock, President 504 W. Angela Circle Goodlettsville, TN YOU CAN'T HAVE ONE WITHOUT THE OTHER! Missions is two-dimensional if it is done well...here at home and around the world. I esteem every person and local church who does it all! Many of you are reaching out to your local communities as well as being faithful to the international dimension of our denomination. Recently I attended an annual fund raising dinner for our local crisis pregnancy center. Their vision statement had words that reflected my own heart's desire. I imagine you would be in agreement with me that this is our goal as God's people: "We seek to offer a community of restoration in the midst of brokenness, declaring worth in God's eyes unto all whom we minister His healing grace. It is our desire to serve as sculptors of the soul to those whose cry is unheard by the ears of the world. Therefore, we exist to point them to the Creator...the One who's got the whole world in His hands with room left over, welcoming you and me and them, and turning it all into us." Praise God for His welcome and grace to ALL of us! Two very important dates on our District NMI calendar are deserving of your attention - #1 District Prayer Retreat at Camp Garner Creek on Oct. 19 (Fri. at 5:30 p.m. beginning with dinner and ending with lunch on Sat.) - Oct. 20. Cost is $40 with two per room. This is a great opportunity for us to seek the Lord together and be reminded of the crucial foundation for ALL our ministry...prayer! Join us and bring a friend. It is beautiful in autumn at our campgrounds, a great place to meet with God. To register contact Kathy Philips at kbphilips@att.net. #2 Our first Work/Witness team is heading to Cuba in December. God has been busy calling folks to join this team! They will be meeting with us at prayer retreat so we can pray with them in preparation. Please put these on your personal prayer list. Here is the name of each team member and the name of their local church: Work/Witness Coordinator: Mick Holcomb, Jason Chapel Dr. Larry Leonard, District Superintendent Al Bigger, Columbia Grace Roger Costa & Chuck Mashburn, Nashville First Emily Eaton, Goodlettsville Larry & Barbara Fox, Gallatin Christopher & Hilary Fryman, Nashville Kaleo Bryant Gentry & Danny Lee Bill Mantlo & Jack Oden, Springfield First Eric & Candace Penny, Jason Chapel Al Pilcher & Ruth Ann Scroggs, Memphis Calvary Albertha Rogers, Memphis Eastside On September 18th Trevecca and our district NMI hosted a Red Cross Shelter Team Training on the TNU campus. 5 Nazarenes from around the world will gather for worship, fellowship, and business next summer in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, for General Assembly 2013, and excitement is growing as housing and event registration is now open. The General Assembly Arrangements Office established a housing block of approximately 29,000 hotel rooms near the Indiana Convention Center. The number of sleeping rooms blocked is based upon past attendance figures, expected popularity of the site, and the Arrangements Office s best projections for attendance. All hotels are within walking distance of the Indiana Convention Center, and hotel prices ranges from US$144 to $169 per night plus tax. Through contracting hotel rooms the Church of the Nazarene secures the convention center at no cost and is able to be good stewards of its resources. As with any contract, there is a legal obligation with financial penalties should we not meet the terms of the contracts. Delegates and visitors are encouraged to stay within the housing block to ensure these obligations are met and that the church does not incur penalties as occurred in Visitors (non-delegates) from the USA and Canada can register now for General Assembly 2013 and make hotel reservations. Registration is available at nazarene.org/ga or by fax or mail using a housing form found in the upcoming September/ October issue of Holiness Today. The event will begin on June 19 and run through June 27. Visitors from outside the USA and Canada may register and make reservations through their regional general assembly coordinator. They may contact their regional office for details. To register as a visitor, check hotel availability and make a reservation, please visit the General Assembly and Conventions website at nazarene.org/ga. General Assembly is the "supreme doctrine-formulating, lawmaking, and elective authority of the Church of the Nazarene" (Manual, 131). The General Assembly and auxiliary conventions (Nazarene Missions International, Nazarene Youth International, and Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries International) convene every four years, bringing together Nazarenes from around the globe.
