בס"ד CONNECTIONS 2 7 J U L Y A V T E R M 3 W E E K 1 Weekly Parsha - Voeschanan Candle Lighting - 4:54 pm Shabbos Ends - 5:52 pm Can One Teach Children Empathy? One of the topics dominating discussion in schools at the moment is this question of empathy. We all know and recognize the symptoms of an environment that is devoid of empathy: an increase in incidents of bullying; depression, anxiety and an escalation of a variety of anti-social behaviours and mental health issues. The common theme that runs through all these anti-social behaviours in many of our schools and communities is this question of empathy. Many educators believe that a far more proactive way of combatting these antisocial behaviours lies in the school s ability to inculcate a culture of caring in the school. By teaching students to recognise and understand the idea of empathy and by teaching children to be empathic in their interactions with others, we help them develop the skills to bring about cultural change in the school community to which they belong. It is with this in mind that at KTC, we have embarked on a programme aptly called Kindess on Purpose. The implementation of the programme calls for staff training; class discussions; communication with parents and families and the implementation of targeted strategies. Simply put: instead of focusing on combatting (or reacting to) negative behaviours, we shift the focus to a proactive programme that teaches children to purposefully demonstrate kindness by specifically looking for opportunities to be kind to do kind deeds to all those in their immediate social circle. In other words, we teach children to be the change we want to see in the world. When children become more connected to the feelings of others, when they actively care about the feelings of others and when they become the recipients of other children s acts of kindness, they see and feel the impact of a kinder, more caring environment, and of course there is no better time to do this, than now: when we are moving soon into the moth of Ellul with its themes of teshuvah, tzedakah and tefillah. We need to teach our children we can build a better world and we can indeed: child by child. 2 Dvar Torah Parshas Voeschanan This week we had the extreme of emotions, ranging from the observance of Tisha B Av on Sunday, arguable the saddest day in Jewish history (Ta anis 26a-b and 29a) and Tu B Av, one of the happiest days in the Jewish calendar (Ta anis 26b and 30b-31a). One of the (six) reasons that Tu B Av is a joyous occasion is because in Israel (in the northern hemisphere - [where one should be living), the nights begin to get longer as the summer solstice is on Tu B Av. Therefore, it is a time when one adds to the nocturnal sessions of learning Torah (see Eruvin 65a), to which we are promised a lengthening of one s life (see Mishlei 3:18). This increase and appreciation to Torah is also seen as an antidote to the Churban, for our Rabbis tell us that there was a certain lack of Torah appreciation that led to the Temple s destruction (Nedarim 81a and Bava Metzia 85a-b). Perhaps it is based on the above that we find in this week s Parsha aside from the Ten Commandments and the Shema, an explicit verse which encourages Torah mastery and specifically the importance of Torah education. The Talmud (Kesubos 111b) writes that one of the ways that we connect to Hashem is by cleaving to our Torah teachers. ודברת בם בשבתך בביתך ובלכתך בדרך ובשכבך ובקומך ושננתם לבניך And you shall teach them to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk on the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up (Devarim 6:7). There are several beautiful ideas that we can learn about the importance of Torah study from this verse. The Talmud (Yoma 19b) mentions that we learn from the expression ודברת בם that we must speak words of Torah and that that should be our primary focus of our speech (Rashi). While it doesn t negate that other topics of study have (some) value, we must realise that the primary topic of conversation should be Torah matters and that concepts outside of Torah are reduced to a secondary level of importance. In fact, the word בם is seen as an acronym for the entire (בראשית) Torah, which comprises the Written Law and the Oral Law.(מאימתי) This concept applies even when our children are very young and perhaps incapable of understanding the Torah, for we find that Rabbi Yehoshua was able to reach his heights in Torah based on his mother exposing him to Torah discussions from an infant (see Avos 2:8 and Yerushalmi Yevamos 1:6 8b) (ודברת בם) However, the goal of learning Torah comes after the Mitzvah of education suc- )This is because if one is to be ושננתם לבניך) cessful at teaching Torah, they must not only talk the talk but also walk the walk. When our children see that we care about the Torah to the extent that we speak of it wherever we go, at all times of the day, they too will be infused with this התורה love and appreciation of the Torah (and the.נותן Yet this approach too is insufficient, if we don t internalise and live the Mitzvos which the Torah commands. Thus, the Torah continues with the Mitzvos of Tefillin and Mezuza, perhaps alluding to the importance of surrounding ourselves physically and adding to our environment with religious markers, which awaken our connection to Hashem on a constant basis (see Rambam Laws of Tefillin, Mezuza and Sefer Torah 6:13). May we merit to internalise these messages, of constantly learning, setting the right example and implementing the Torah into our life, to merit this comforting Shabbos with the rebuilding of the 3rd Temple speedily in our days. Have a comforting Shabbos, Rabbi Simons Postscript: An added message for teachers is that the Torah writes ושננתם לבניך) ) for all who we teach become our (spiritual) children (see Sanhedrin 19b and 99b). While that places a special merit to all those involved in Torah education, it also places an enormous responsibility as to the level of concern that one must have for our students. While we have this emotional concern, we must also be vigorous in our learning, to reach the intellectual expertise that when asked with a question, we won t stammer but will answer immediately (Kiddushin 30a).

Early Learning Where to Go for Your Holidays Trip Adviser have just listed KTC Early Learning as the place to go for your holidays! The sunny weather meant we could spend a good part of our days outside picnicking and riding our scooters. We now rival Legoland, as we built the biggest Beis HaMikdash ever (according to the children). It took them two weeks to build, using every block we could find in the school. I asked the children how they would like to represent the holidays and they said lots of pictures of us! So to honour the children we have represented the holiday fun in pictures. Virginia Aghan Exciting News! KTC opens class for 1 year old children in CRELS from 8th October 2018 Enquiries: Rachelle Smith (Enrolment Officer) enrolments@ktc.nsw.edu.au

Early Learning Indoor Play Build The Beis Hamikdash The children in early learning spent the time leading up to Tishaa B av learning about the Beis Hamikdash. The children then spent a few days working together to build a giant model of the Beis Hamikdash! They used recycled boxes, duplo, wooden and plastic blocks to put together a beautiful Beis Hanikdash model. It was very special to see the children displaying incredible unity as they worked together while singing sheyibane Beis hamikdash. Morah Mushky

Primary Book Week BOOK WEEK Find Your Treasure Save the date! Save the date! Save the date! To celebrate Book Week Find Your Treasure, the Annual KTC Book Fair will be held on Wednesday 22 August, (Week 5). Carnival Books will bring a fabulous selection of books for students and parents to purchase and to donate to the new Sam Moss Library. A percentage of all funds raised is returned to the school through book purchases. Students are also encouraged to dress up as their favourite Book character. Dig out the costume and fancy dress box. Start collecting those useful recyclable items and materials. Get planning, get creative and get inventive. Look out for the Book Week invitation coming home in your child's bag week 2/3. Who will you be? Student Fundraising Ariel Moss and Araleh Richter fundraised in their own time donating the money to the school. After a long discussion we have purchased a bean bag for the Year 5 boys' classroom for the students to enjoy. Thank you, boys for your hard work! Mrs Bellingham

Primary School Pragmatic Skills in the Learning Centre Students with strong social skills can instinctively adjust their facial expression, body language and tone of voice to interact with and be well-understood in the world around them. Pragmatic skills are the skills we use to communicate with the people around us, including the words we use and how we say those words, as well as our body language when we are speaking and when we are silent. It also applies to how we communicate in different social settings. Students who have difficulties with pragmatic skills find it challenging to follow unspoken social cues, which makes it difficult to understand what others are thinking and feeling. In the Learning Centre, we use evidence-based, concrete and visual resources coupled with role playing and modelling to help our students interact with and better understand the world around them. Social behaviours and pragmatic skills are explicitly taught and practiced. For example, when the students walk through our doors, we foster and promote strong and healthy social skills. They are reminded to have appropriate eye contact, are taught to celebrate other students successes and are expected to display respectful behavior and conversations between peers and teachers alike. Below are examples of simple activities that you can practise at home with your children to foster strong social skills, such as, greetings, eye contact, personal space, tone of voice, taking turns in conversation and being a good sport. Role-Play: Role-playing is a valuable strategy as it gives children the experience of interacting with different people in a variety of situations. For example, you can write common social interactions on cards or strips of paper. The tasks on the cards should require your children to think carefully about possible responses and ways of behaving in different situations. Remember to model and reward social skills that your child has used well, for example, You looked at me in the eye while you were talking, well done. Example scenarios include: Your mother is talking to her friend and you need to get her attention. How will you do it? You are at your friend s house. You are bored with the game you are playing. What can you say or do? Charades Charades is a great game for teaching body language. Place slips of paper in a container with different emotions written on them. You can start with easy emotions, such as, happy and sad and later add more complex emotions, such as, anxious, confused and frustrated. Others must guess what the person is communicating using only their body; no words allowed!

Primary School Pragmatic Skills in the Learning Centre You can also video record your children acting out the emotions. After the game, play the video for them and have them describe their body language to you. This helps them visually identify how their body language demonstrates different feelings. For example, if Mendy acted out 'angry,' have him explain what his body was doing to show this emotion. He might saysomething like, 'my fists were clenched.' This helps students recognise emotions in other people; an important and critical component of communication. The social skills picture book Jed Baker, PHD To Say It or Not to Say It? Create different social scenarios and place them in a container for your child to select from. Have him/her read the scenario out loud and then decide if the sentiment in the scenario is something he/she should say out loud or just think to themselves. Have your child explain his/her answers. Example scenarios include: Your friend is wearing a Batman t-shirt. You don t like Batman and do not like your friend s shirt. Your teammate scored a goal in soccer. You think he did a good job. Remember to choose scenarios that are specific to your child s needs. These activities should be an enjoyable experience that also allows for some quality time together. You can practice pragmatic skills as a part of everyday learning! Katrina Siegel, Learning Support Staff Updates After School Care Supervisor Required We are seeking new After School Care supervisors. We have both ongoing and relief roles available. To be successful in this role you need a Working with Children s Check, a current First Aid Certificate and have experience working with children. You will be required to program and facilitate activities for a small group of Primary students each Monday-Thursday afternoon. Should you be interested in this role please send your CV to noelene.bellingham@ktc.nsw.edu.au Year 5 & 6 Canberra Excursion In the recent Term Circular there was an error printed stating that there is an excursion to Canberra for Year 5 & 6. We have been trying hard to organise an overnight trip to Canberra later in the year, but it is proving to be very expensive. We are continuing to work on finding cheaper alternatives and will inform you should we be able to organise the excursion. We apologise for any inconvenience. Mrs Bellingham

Primary School Year 6 Inspired by Kate and Jol Temple s picture book, 'Room on Our Rock,' which celebrates the truth that there are two sides to every story, (as the book can be read two different ways) Year 6 students created their own picture books which they then shared with students in the CRELS. Miss Rudansky Living Parsha We are only three days into the new term and already Year K has been busy with lots of learning. In this week s Parsha, Vo eschanan, the students were able to discuss and explore the Shema and the important items we use in our everyday lives that contain the Shema inside. The students learnt that inside every Mezuza and every box of Tefillin, one can find the paragraphs of the Shema. We spoke about the importance of this Tefilah and the meaning of it. The students were excited to go on a Mezuza hunt around the school, searching for all the Mezuzas on the doorposts. We also discussed the importance of one special line in the Shema, Veshinantam Le Vanecha, a parent s duty to teach their children the mitzvos. In class, the students shared different moments where they had learnt something with their parents. Each week the Year K s thoroughly enjoy reading and engaging with the weekly messages and mitzvos from the Parsha. Mrs Lavan

Boys' High School Welcome to Term 3 This term marks the end of the Preliminary course for our senior students. Preliminary exams will commence in Week 7 and it is important that we create environments that support the physical well being of our students. Establishing healthy practises now are necessary as students begin their HSC year in Term 4. Sleep, balance and food form the foundation for supporting students so that they can perform their best at school and be productive when studying at home. Sleep: research suggests that teenagers need between 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night but are only getting about 6.5 to 7.5 per night. One contributing factor is the 'teenage body clock', which naturally shifts to make them feel tired later in the evening. Using screen-based devices (smart phones and other devices) around bed time is another factor that reduces sleep time. Teens who put down their smartphones an hour before bed gain an extra 21 minutes sleep a night, (that's one hour and 45 minutes over the school week) according to a study by Vic Health and the Sleep Health Foundation. Balance: families that put in structures to encourage a balance between studies, family time, relaxation, exercise and social commitments can have a positive impact on students well-being. The right balance is often difficult to determine and can vary between families and the interests of the child. One simple strategy is to observe time spent on various activities and suggest your child spends time on something else if they do too much of one activity. Food: the following table summarises the optimal serves per day for adolescent children, according to the Australian Dietary Guidelines (Department of Health and Aging). These guidelines can be applied to all secondary students to help build healthy habits that promote students physical well-being. istem Chaim Kastel Year 9 testing the strength of the solar powered car he built and designed in istem during Term 2. 15 Boys' High School Shluchim to the BHS "This week we welcomed Aaron and Dovid Kastel as shluchim to the Boys High School. They began with a bang, introducing a variety of shiurim during recess and lunch, as well as chassidus before davening. On Friday morning there was also a special program for Tu B'Av and on Motzoei Shabbos there will be soccer for Year 9. Likkutei Dibburim Shiur at lunch on Thursday Winter Yeshiva In the second week of the holidays, many high school boys got together with some of their teachers to spend their mornings studying gemorah at Bina. The morning was divided up between shachris, breakfast, chavrusa and then a shiur on the topic of tefilla bizmana. The program was a huge success. At the end of the week a small goral for two Westfield vouchers was held for all boys who attended for the entire week. The lucky winners were Mendel Perlow and Levi Kastel.
