1 Archaeology s role in building national narratives: Israel as a case study (ANTH 209) (UCSD, Winter 2019, Graduate Seminar) Instructor: Prof. Erez Ben-Yosef ebenyose@post.tau.ac.il Phone/Skype: erez.ben.yosef Office hours: Mo, 3-5pm (office: SSB292) Class meetings: Mo, 12:00P-2:50P Room: SSB105 Archaeology played a major role in the early days of the newly founded state of Israel, with many projects aimed at finding evidence for past Jewish presence in the land. Archaeological excavations, some on a national scale, were part of the creation of a new national narrative and some would argue that this role still exists today. In this class we will explore the connection between archaeology and modern history in the contentious land of Israel (with case studies such as Masada and Jerusalem); using examples from other places around the globe, it will be demonstrated that this role of archaeology is rather common in modern history of nation-state, although accentuated in places of conflict. Class assignments and grading - Active participation in discussion (15%) Discussions are based on the required reading materials; your contribution should demonstrate your understanding of the topic if needed, also read the complementary reading - Presentation of selected papers (30%) Each student will present 3-6 selected papers in class, as introduction to discussions. The presentation includes: (a) a concise, bullet-point summary of the arguments made in the paper printed as a handout; (b) a 15-20min oral presentation of the paper in class (Power Point in not required); (c) a suggestion of 1-2 selected issues for further discussion - Final paper (55%) A seminar paper (15-20 pages) on selected topics Topic approval by the end of the 5 th week Annotated bibliography to be submitted by the end of the 8 th week (15%) Final paper due: March 23 rd 2019 (40%) 1
