2 Course/Module description: The seminar will deal with aspects of the archaeology of memory. We will be introduced to modern theories about memory which distinguish between the memory of the individual and the historical, collective and communicative memory(ies). We will discuss the ancient Near Eastern perceptions on the beyond and their projections on the ancient traditions and practices concerning memory and will examine modern theories and reflections about memory vis-א-vis the archaeological records. As individuals whose occupation and interests are invested in the study of past societies we archaeologists - deal with memory in our everyday professional life. Therefore we will ask how our own perceptions of memory shape our work: as individuals, as members in a given society, and as mediators whose role is to shed light and reconstruct the past. Course/Module aims: The purpose of the graduate seminar is to acquaint the student with high-grade state-of-the art archaeological research with strong theoretical components. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: To engage with high-register archaeological discourse. To present a topic to a professional audience.
