In fact they said the teacher may look in where the children are reading but he himself must not read פרק ז משנה מסכת שבת והמעמר הדש והזורה הבורר הטוחן והמרקד מלאכות ארבעים חסר אחת הזורע והחורש והקוצר [ב] אבות שתי בתי נירין והאורג שני את הצמר המלבנו והמנפצו והצובעו ווהטווה והמיסך והעושה והלש והאופה הגוזז הצד צבי השוחטו תפירות הקורע ע"מ לתפור שתי תפירות הקושר והמתיר והתופר שתי חוטין והפוצע ב' חוטין לכתוב שתי אותיות על מנת והמפשיטו המולחו והמעבד את עורו והמוחקו והמחתכו הכותב שתי אותיות והמוחק לרשות הרי אלו אבות מלאכות ארבעים חסר המוציא מרשות הבונה והסותר המכבה והמבעיר המכה בפטיש אחת: There are 39 primary categories of work (forbidden on the Sabbath, with many more subsidiaries not mentioned in this Mishna). Seeding, plowing, reaping, gathering, threshing, winnowing, sorting, grinding, sifting, kneading, baking, shearing wool, bleaching it, combing it, dyeing it, spinning it, mounting the warp of the loom, setting two heddles [in preparation to weaving], weaving two threads, unraveling two threads, tying a knot, untying a knot, sewing two stitches, tearing in preparation of sewing two stitches, trapping a deer, slaughtering it, skinning it, salting it & tanning its hide,, smoothing [the hide], cutting the hide [into useful shapes], writing two letters, erasing in orderr to write two letters, building, demolishing, extinguishing a flame, kindling a fire, striking the final blow (completing production of an object), transferring an object from place to place. Thesee are the 39 primary categories of work.
2 e 2 Eruvin: Rabbinic enactments concerning some Shabbos laws. Pesachim: Pas ssover Many laws governing the Korban Pesach the offering brought to the Holy Temple on the evee of Passover. The mitzvos concerning matzah and the prohibitions against chametz (leaven). Laws and traditions of the Seder night. משנה מסכת פסחים פרק י משנה ה אלו בפסח לא יצא ידי חובתו ואלו הן פסח מצה ומרור אמר שלשה דברים גמליאל היה אומר כל שלא [ה] רבן מרור על שום שנגאלו אבותינו במצרים בתי אבותינו במצרים מצה על שום פסח על שום שפסח המקום על חייב אדם לראות את עצמו כאילו הוא יצא ממצרים המצריים את חיי אבותינו במצרים בכל דור ודור שמררו לי בצאתי ממצרים לפיכך אנחנו חייבין זה עשה ה' ביום ההוא לאמר בעבור שנאמר ) (שמות יג) והגדת לבנך להדר לברך לעלה ולקלס למי שעשה לאבותינו ולנו את כל הניסים האלו להודות ללהלל לשבח לפאר לרומם מעבדות לחירות מיגון לשמחה ומאבל ליום טוב ומאפילה לאור גדול ומשעבוד לגאולה ונאמר לפניו הוציאנו הללויה: Rabban Gamliel would say one who has not said the following three things at the Pesach (seder) has not fulfilled his obligation. Pesach, Matzah, and Marror. Pesach, because the Omnipresent passed over (posach) our ancestorss homes in Egypt (during the plague of the firstborn). Matzah, becausee our ancestors were redeemed from Egypt. Maror (bitter herbs), because the Egyptians embittered our ancestors lives in Egypt. In every generation one must see himself as if he left Egypt as it says: And you shall tell your son on that day, it is because of this, because of what G d did for me when I left Egypt. Therefore we must thank, prais, laud, glorify, exalt, honor, bless, extol, acclaim He who has done for our ancestors and for us all of these miracles. He took us out of bondage to freedom, from distresss to joy, from mourning to a happy day, from darkness to a great light, and from slavery to redemption and let us say before Him Hallelukah (Praised be G d). Shekalim: Collection of the half Shekelas well as the expenses and expenditure of the Bais Hamikdash. משנה מסכת שקלים פרק ג בי"ת גימ"ל רבי ישמעאל אומר של שלש ששלש סאין תורמין את הלשכה וכתוב בהן אל"ף משנה ב: בשלש קופות ולא בתפילין ולא ולא במנעל ולא בסנדל בית"א גמל "א אין התורם נכנס לא בפרגוד חפות יונית כתוב בהן אלפ"א לפי שאדם צריך הלשכה העשיר יעשיר ויאמרו מתרומת שמא יעני ויאמרו מעון הלשכה העני או שמא בקמיע שנאמר (במדבר ל"ב) והייתם נקיים מה' ומישראל ואומר לצאת ידי המקום לצאת ידי הבריות כדרך שצריך ומצא חן ושכל טוב בעיני אלהים ואדם: (משלי ג')

Because one must be free of blame beforee society as before G d as it states (Numbers 32): and you shall be clean before G d and Israel. And (Proverbs 3) and you shall find favor and good understanding in the eyes of G d and Man. Yoma: Yom Kippur The special servicee of the Kohen Gadol (High Priest) in the Holy Temple. Laws and obligations surrounding the Day of Atonement. משנה מסכת יומא פרק ח אסור באכילה ובשתיה ווברחיצה ובסיכה ובנעילת הסנדל ובתשמיש המטה והמלך והכלה משנה א : יום הכפורים פניהם והחיה תנעול את הסנדל דברי רבי אליעזר וחכמים אוסרין: ירחצו את חייב כל האוכלין מצטרפין לככותבת וכל מלא לוגמיו משנה ב :האוכל ככותבת הגסה כמוה וכגרעינתה והשותה המשקין מצטרפין למלא לוגמיו האוכל ושותה אין מצטרפין: On Yom Kippur the following five things are prohibited: Eating, drinking, bathing, anointing oneself, wearing shoes and marital relations. Kings and brides may wash their faces and a new mother may wear shoes according to R Eliezer, the Sages forbid it. One who eats the volume of a large date, along with its pit or drinks (the amount that could fill) his cheeks is liable (for punishment) All foods combine to make up the volume of a date and all drinks combine for the volume of a cheekful, food and drink however, do not combine. Sukkah: The eight day holiday of Sukkos. 4 e 4 A sukkah higher than 20 cubits is invalid. R Yehudah validates it. (A sukkah) lower than 10 handbreadths, or (one) withoutt (at least) three walls, or (one) wheree the sunlight exceeds the shade is invalid. An old Sukkah: The school of Shammai invalidate, The school of Hillel validate. What is an old sukkah? One that was built more than thirty days before the holiday (Sukkos). If it was built specifically for the holiday, even if it was built in the beginning of the year, it is kosher. Beitzah: Laws that apply to the major Holidays. Rosh Hashan ah: The New Year. The prayers and Shofar blowing. משנה מסכת ראש השנה פרק ג משנה ג פשוט ופיו של ראש ההשנה של יעל [ג] שופר מקצרות שמצות היום בשופר: מצופה זהב ושתי חצוצרות מן הצדדין שופר מאריך וחצוצרות The shofar (used on) Rosh Hashanah is made from a wild goat, is straight, with a gold coated mouthpiece, and two trumpets at its sides. The shofar (blasts) are long and the trumpets short,, for the mitzvah of the day is with the shofar. Ta anis: Fast days. Megillah: Major mitzvos include: Reading (or hearing) the Megillah. Gifts of food. Charity. Festive meal. Moed Katan: Chol Hamoed: The intermediate days of the Holidays. See Below. Chagigah: The special offering brought to the Temple in Jerusalem on the major Holidays.
5 e 5 Definition of Terms:* Bais Hamikdash: Eruv (pl. Eruvin) Chol Hamoed Mitzvah: The Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Constructions/delineations that alter the domains of the Sabbath for carrying and travel The intermediate days of the Holidays. Not all Holiday laws apply but some do. In Israel: days 2,3,4,5 and 6 of Passover; 2,3,4,5,6, and 7 of Sukkos. Outside Israel: days 3,,4,5 and 6 of Passover; 3,4,5,6 and 7 of Sukkos. Divine commandment (pl. mitzvos) ).
