2 Page 2... Congregation Beth David... Summer-Fall 2018 From Rabbi Adler New Year Message: Recognizing Limitations, Strengthening our Weaknesses Rosh Hashanah is that time of year when we look back upon the previous year and decide what we want to fix about ourselves for the following year. Maybe it s the way we look, or the way we think, how we spend our time or who we spend it with; maybe we feel we do not do enough for the community maybe we feel we do too much. Maybe we weigh too little, maybe too much. Maybe we re too quiet, maybe we re too loud. Maybe we re all of these maybe we re none of these. But, one thing is for sure none of us is perfect, because, well, we were not made that way. If we were, other folks would call us God, and that simply would not work. According to the Rabbis, we were created in an imperfect state. Adam & Eve were formed on the sixth day, Friday, and according to Midrash, they already sinned with the apple and were banished from the Garden of Eden before the very first Shabbat. It only took one generation to experience murder when Cain kills Abel in a jealous rage, as they vie for God s acceptance through their unique sacrifices. Just a few generations later, God decides to flood the entire world because its inhabitants had become so evil and wicked, that only one man, Noah, and his family, were saved. Even Moses, the great prophet and leader, was not allowed by God to enter Canaan, the Promised Land, because he showed certain weaknesses while leading the Israelites thru the Sinai wilderness. As a matter of fact, most biblical heroes are presented as having failings of one type or another. So if we feel we are not as perfect as we think we ought to be, we are not alone in our deficiencies we are in good company. Even if we do accept our limitations, we want to work on ourselves a bit, strengthen some weaknesses, polish off some dull spots and clear some blemishes. Yes, we do this every year, and perhaps we fail at doing this every year. However, a significant key to fixing ourselves is embracing the notion that even though we know we may never achieve all that we want for ourselves; we are nevertheless still obligated to work towards it. Pirkei Avot, the Ethics of the Sages, underscores this idea as it records the words of Rabbi Tarfon It is not your obligation to complete the task, but neither are you at liberty to desist from it entirely. (2:16) Thus, we enter a new year realizing we are not perfect, and knowing that there is always room for improvement. We enter a new year fully intending to do the best we can, while acknowledging that our best may turn out to be only our good. We enter a new year hoping that our positives outweigh our negatives, with a clear understanding that as fallible humans, we are bound to miss the mark every once in a while. At the same time, we do not give up on our attempts to attain a state of flawlessness; to inch in on precision; to strive towards a position of excellence. We also know that we may not always be able to choose the appropriate course, for one reason or another. But, we have plenty of opportunities to improve - every day is a new day, and every day we can do better than we did yesterday. What s important is that we learn from our mistakes. The only person we should strive to be better than is the person we were yesterday. As has been said - Better to do something imperfectly, than to do nothing flawlessly. On Rosh Hashanah it is written On Yom Kippur it is sealed. May it be written and may it be sealed that all of you have a new year that brings fulfillment and happiness, peace and prosperity and all of life s very best things. Lori and I and our families wish all of you a Shanah Tovah Umetukah - A good and sweet year!

6 Page 4... Congregation Beth David... Summer-Fall 2018 Sophie Ahava s Birthright Experience This past December I had the opportunity to travel to Israel under Birthright. This free, 10-day trip allowed me to meet 40 other Jews between the ages of from all over the U.S., and to learn more about what being Jewish means to me. I grew up attending a conservative synagogue, attended Hebrew school every Wednesday and Sunday, went to services, and after my Bat-Mitzvah even taught the kids in the Hebrew school. I considered myself pretty Jewish, both religiously and culturally. Though there were 40 of us on this trip, a few of us from different parts of the country, like Virginia, Florida, and Ohio, over half of the students on this birthright trip were from Boston, specifically the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Hillel. A lot of people asked me if I knew anyone who was going on this trip, and my answer was always, Not one. I am just excited to meet 39 other kids my age who also happen to be Jewish. Those 10 days in Israel were among the best days of my life. I traveled with a group called Shorashim. I chose Shorashim because while they went everywhere that other Birthright sponsors go in Israel, Shorashim keeps Israelis on the trip the entire 10 days. Israelis usually accompany every Birthright trip, but most companies only keep them for half the trip. These soldiers were the same age as us and had gotten a 10-day vacation from the military to explore their country with us, while learning about American Jewish culture, as we learned about their culture. We started up north in the Golan Heights on the border with Syria. We climbed Mount Bental where you could see Israel, Syria, and Lebanon. We visited the beautiful cobblestone town of Tzfat, where we sang Lecha Dodi on a rooftop; a school in Haifa, where we played soccer and tag with Israeli children; and on Shabbat, we went through Jerusalem s Ben Yehuda Street, where every inch of space was taken up by those preparing for the holy night. When the sun went down, we walked from our hotel to the Western Wall, where each of us had the opportunity to stick a note in the Wall and go right up and touch it. It was incredible. We had our own little Shabbat service back at the hotel that was led by one of our leaders, while also playing his guitar. New Year s Eve was spent in Tel Aviv. As we made our way south, we stayed a night in Bedouin tents and rode camels. I was surprised that camels are very awkward and uncomfortable animals to ride. My favorite day was the day we woke up at 4 a.m. to hike Masada and sat on the top watching the sunrise over the Negev Desert and Dead Sea. It was truly breathtaking. That same day, we hiked down to have breakfast and then floated in the Dead Sea. During the trip we also took the time to pay our respects at Yad Vashem, Israel s Holocaust Museum and Mount Herzl, Israel s national cemetery, probably two of the most powerful and emotionally filled sites on the trip. (Continued next page)

7 Page 5... Congregation Beth David... Summer-Fall 2018 All these places were amazingly beautiful. Israel is a beautiful country. Some of the most important and meaningful times on my trip were our end-of-the-day reflections. Sometimes they were games, where we learned more about Israel s history, and others were more about sitting in a circle and reflecting on our day, learning about current events, and listening to the Israeli soldiers talk about their Jewish upbringing and time in the service. The reflections at night were where I learned the most. Yes, Israel was breathtakingly beautiful, but to learn and listen to 46 different answers to the question, What does it mean to be Jewish? well those were some of the most meaningful moments, and where I learned the most. Bus rides were filled with conservations like, What did you learn in Hebrew school? How often do you go to temple? or Did you have your bar/bat mitzvah? The questions I asked and even left with about Judaism plus the deep conversations we all had about being Jewish were some of my favorite parts of traveling on Birthright. I got to better understand my heritage, my culture, and my religion with 40 other people who became my close friends all while traveling around the beautiful country of Israel.
