1 The CONSERVATOR Newsletter of Temple Shalom November/October 2017 Kislev/Tevet 5778 It is a New Year What does that mean? To many Jews it means that we have begun a new cycle of the Torah Bereshiet. To many others it means that it is fall and the weather is going to change. For me it means that it is time to write a quarterly essay for our Conservator, something inspiring and filled with wisdom. So on this very foggy October 23, after staying up to watch the N E Patriots take apart the Atlanta Falcons I begin to scribble -- What is ahead of us between now and Passover? Presidents Greetings Care to sponsor a wine, beer and cheese repose at the Temple or a venue of your choice? Make it an event free of technology! I dare you!!! Step up to the bar and let s put a plan in motion. We need to create forward movement one that commits to face to face communications not just via a cellphone or . We need volunteers for Oneg Shabbats and the once a month Kiddush luncheon following a Shabbat morning service. Call a member of the Board to volunteer please. Then with the ring of the telephone the entire day was turned on its head. It was Rabbi Loel Weiss calling me to tell me that Rabbi Jagolinzer had passed during the night. For me, although this was expected, it was an extremely difficult moment in time and so I have sat still for a few days not able to put inspirational words to paper. I was a newbie in town when I first meet Rabbi Jagolinzer in I was a 35 year old young man at the beginning of a career change. Rabbi Jagolinzer was taking his first pulpit at age 25. So began our forty three year relationship of learning together, celebrating mitzvahs and caring for those that passed away. Working to move forward in life. Not always pretty but always a hug at the end of a meeting. Shalom Rabbi Jagolinzer, Shalom. Now we must move on. Temple Shalom is not a growing congregation because most young people have moved out into the world removed from Newport County. I understand that this is a problem in not just the Jewish Community but also most Christian ones as well. Guess what, that is not our problem. We need to find out what the Jewish faith community is missing and what it is that they feel about a future for our Jewish faith community at Temple Shalom or for that matter anywhere. The grey heads hang on, trudge to Friday night services, have our Onegs and Shabbat morning services and a luncheon filled with smoked salmon and the words of wisdom of Rabbi Loel Weiss. Great, but there are too many cohorts missing. They are the core of 45 to 65 year olds who seem to have lost interest in the Temple. Why? Then there are the Millennials age 23 to 40 that most of you don t believe really exist in Newport County. Well, let s find out who is right! Let us sit down and brainstorm the list. They don t have to be married with children, even though they are an important group that needs to be nurtured. What is it that they feel is missing from their Jewish Community? We need to see faces intermingling in our community. We need your ideas and we need your physical presence. Would you care to speak before the Congregation? Let me know the subject and maybe it will be the keystone to a wonderful weekday evening or Shabbat afternoon gathering. Remember to come to services, if not as a weekly habit then try once a month. There are members who need to recite Kaddish for a Yahrzeit and we need a minyan to do that. It is one of the important ways that we perpetuate the memory of departed loved ones. This could be your need one day. The Board needs your help! The Congregation needs your help! In November we are planning the annual interfaith community Thanksgiving Service on Wednesday evening November 22, 7:00 PM at Temple Shalom. This is a service started by Rabbi Jagolinzer. Let us continue this community celebration. Looking forward to December we will celebrate Chanukah, the celebration of light and renewal. So let us start there. Chanukah is not only the Festival of Light, it is also the Festival of Rededication. It is not just for the young children. It is an opportunity for all who care to shine the light on a future for our Temple Shalom community. For Chanukah we will have a Chanukah Party. Latkes, games for the young children, time to sing. Stay tuned for more information. During the month of January we will join together with the larger non-jewish community to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Details will be forthcoming soon. Included in this issue of The Temple Shalom Conservator is a schedule of Shabbat Services. The Cantor prepares a wonderful musical service for Shabbat. Each week for the past year we have eked out a minyan with one exception. Volunteer to sponsor an Oneg Shabbat (call Emily Anthony for details). Invite your friends (Jewish or non-jewish). Please join with us to celebrate Shabbat. Do you have ideas for a Friday evening speaker? Let the Chairman of the Ritual Committee (Steve Schneller) know some background to make it a reality. BEFORE YOU KNOW IT PURIM WILL BE UPON US (TIME TO PARTY) AND THEN PASSOVERBEGINS ON FRIDAY MARCH 30, Onward! Michael S. Mendell, President Temple Shalom is an embracing, supportive, vibrant community which is committed to observing Conservative Judaism in a contemporary and progressive tradition and which is devoted to the continuation of Jewish values, education and culture. Temple Shalom honors the diversity of its members and is dedicated to their spiritual, intellectual and religious growth.

3 THE HOLIDAYS HAVE PAST. BUT THE MEMORIES LAST The daylight hours are getting shorter and shorter; soon the Alberta Express will deliver its wintry blast. But the memories of our holidays at Temple Shalom will keep us warm and glowing! As usual, our Chazzan (Cantor) Frederic Scheff sang the solemn High Holiday prayers so powerfully and with kavanah (the proper spirit and feeling). We were fortunate to have as our guest rabbi Ms. Talia Stein whose youthful enthusiasm was refreshing and inspiring. Additionally, on the eve of Yom Kippur, for Kol Nidre, our member Emily Anthony, her friend Val Korennoy, and our keyboard player of many years, Steve Martorella, added to the beauty and solemnity of the service with their instruments. Thanks to the work of the Ritual Committee, co-chaired by Steve Schneller and Michael Vale, all the services ran smoothly and in a dignified manner. After a long day of fasting, prayer and repentance on Yom Kippur, we feasted on the delicious break-fast meal sponsored by Lois and Steve Schneller. More thanks to Temple president, Michael Mendell, for all his time, and to all the people who participated in the services. Just a few days after the introspective High Holidays, it was party time---sukkot, the Festival of Booths, lasting an entire week: two days of full holiday, and five intermediary days, when ordinary activities and work are permitted, but one observes the special rituals of eating in the temporary booth (sukkah), waving the four species of plants (lulav and etrog), and adding special holiday prayers to the daily services. We celebrated Sukkot and Shabbat together, and thanks to Bob Helmbrecht and Steve Schneller for putting together our sukkah. The last holidays, Sh mini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, we celebrated together, combining the sadness of reciting Yizkor (memorial services) with dancing with the Torah scrolls. If you were unable to join us for the recent holidays, you can join our haimische (homey and welcoming) kehillah (community) for Friday evening (welcoming the Sabbath) throughout the winter, and also for some Shabbat mornings (Saturdays). For dates and times, please check local newspapers (Newport this Week, Portsmouth Times, etc.) or call the Temple Margo Vale PS If I left out a thank you to anyone, my apologies! The Cantor s Corner I write this with the heaviest of hearts. We learned on Rosh Chodesh Chesvan that it is often called MarChesvan, Bitter Chesvan. For the members of our Temple Shalom and the greater Island community as well as the many organizations that worked with and knew him, Rabbi Marc S. Jagolinzer s passing is an enormous loss. It has left us with a gaping hole in so many ways. For me, I lost a teacher, a mentor, a friend, and a colleague. One of the things that I learned from him was to move forward and make a future. We will remember Rabbi Marc on Thanksgiving eve with the rest of our Island community as we celebrate Thanksgiving. As Cheshvan passes to Kislev we move forward to thoughts of rededication as we celebrate the rededication of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem. I am sure we all remember Rabbi Marc s illuminated Menorah sweatshirt. Let the lights of the Menorah light the way to a new future as we continue to move forward building and rebuilding, to spending time together sharing thanks and rededication. Fundraising Report Yom Kippur Appeal CONGRATULATIONS! With several Yom Kippur Appeal cards not yet returned, the appeal is on the verge of surpassing the figures for last year! We are VERY close to 100% participation. If your pledge card is still on the to do pile, please send it off. If it has been misplaced you can call for another or even just send in your intent to me or the temple. Thank You! Karen Dannin, 417A Corey Lane, Middletown, RI 02842, klmdri@aol.com
4 MISHABEIRACH LIST At weekly services a prayer is offered for those who are ill and fighting disease. During this prayer for recovery the names of those in need are mentioned. We request that names to be included on the list be submitted to the Temple prior to Shabbat, and, that the names, which we already have be updated on a regular basis. SPONSOR AN ONEG We are grateful for all those people who sponsored and prepared the Onegs for Shabbat services and for special occasions. Now is the time to save a date to be one of those who will sponsor or prepare an oneg. It is a warm and special way to share in community and celebrate with fellow congregants. Maybe it s a birthday or anniversary you want to share. Maybe it is the birth of a new family member. Maybe you want to honor someone. Any excuse or even no excuse to celebrate is reason enough Please contact Emily Anthony or emilyanth@gmail.com. HELP OUR SYNAGOGUE MEMBERSHIP GROW The temple would like every member to assist them in their goal of increasing the membership of our congregation. In order to accomplish our goal, we ask that you inform the Temple office of all families who have moved into your neighborhood, as we would like to welcome them to our community TO REMEMBER IS TO KEEP ALIVE According to Jewish tradition, we honor our loved one s memory by reciting Kaddish and by lighting a Yahrzeit candle on the anniversary of their death. Temple Shalom offers opportunities to fulfill this Mitzvah by arranging contributions and dedicating Memorial Plaques to perpetuate the memory of a loved one. A Memorial Plaque is a constant reminder and a timely symbol of a cherished devotion to those we wish to remember. On the anniversary date of the Yahrzeit a light is kindled next to the nameplate. In accordance with Jewish tradition, whenever Yizkor is observed, a light should be kindled and Kaddish recited. The present contribution for a Memorial Plaque is $ For additional information please contact the Temple. Contributions of many meaningful and needed items can be dedicated at the Temple. Ways of Giving Long term The Temple needs to plan for the long term. One way in which you can help us is to make Temple Shalom a Beneficiary in your Life Insurance Policy. Your insurance agent can help in that regard. Another way to help for the long haul is to remember Temple Shalom in your Will or Trust. This is something with which your attorney can assist you.
