3 Questions BY RABBI DAN LEVIN Bertrand Russell once said: In all affairs, it s a healthy thing now and then to hang a question mark on the things you have long taken for granted. For us who embrace the rhythm of Jewish life, these two months are all about hanging question marks on what we take for granted in life. Jewish tradition returns us each year to the month of Elul and the celebration of the High Holy Days, occasions that invite us to look deep within and ask ourselves life s most important questions. What am I doing with my life? How am I choosing to use the extraordinary gifts of time and talent that have been afforded me? Am I living in a way that honors the sacrifice of those upon whose shoulders I stand? Am I giving enough of myself to my loved-ones, to my community, to my people, to my country, to humanity? Am I reserving enough of myself for myself? These questions animate me more profoundly as our family prepares to celebrate Bat Mitzvah for our youngest daughter. I find myself returning again and again to these questions and others. Am I a good father? Am I helping my daughter to love the richness of her own spirit? Am I doing enough to help her find her path? Am I sharing with her enough time, enough wisdom, enough love? Am I guiding her to appreciate the value of the extraordinary depth and wisdom of her people, her tradition, and her heritage? Am I modeling for her what goodness looks like? Am I listening well enough to what she has to say, and to what she is trying to say without words? During this past summer, I began a three-year journey as a student with the Rabbinic Leadership Initiative at the Shalom Hartman Institute. This wonderful opportunity brought me to Jerusalem for 25 days of intensive study with an extraordinary group of rabbinic colleagues from across the Jewish spectrum. It was exhilarating and refreshing - a chance to marinate What am I doing with my life? How am I choosing to use the extraordinary gifts of time and talent that have been afforded me? Am I living in a way that honors the sacrifice of those upon whose shoulders I stand? Am I giving enough of myself to my loved-ones, to my community, to my people, to my country, to humanity? Am I reserving enough of myself for myself? my spirit in Jewish text and Jewish wisdom. Jewish tradition gives us time each week for that kind of introspection and reflection - Shabbat. Shabbat is a time to step back from the pursuit of life and to consider what it is we have chosen to pursue. Jewish tradition gives us time each year for that kind of introspection and reflection. The celebration of the High Holy Days asks each of us to take an accounting of our lives and to look very carefully at what we have chosen to write on our page in the Book of Life. Jewish tradition gives us time in our life-cycle for that kind of introspection and reflection. The celebration of our children s coming of age demands that we stand in awe and wonder at the growth of the spirit, to marvel at the web of relationship that connects us all as family, friends, community, and Peoplehood, and to consider how each of us is using the gift of life. As I enter into this sacred time in the year and in my life, I find myself filled with trepidation and gratitude - trepidation as I confront these monumental questions, and gratitude that I have the wisdom of our tradition and the company of family and community as I journey toward the answers. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruling Spirit of the Universe, Who has given us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this holy season. September/October 2016 T H E C H R O N I C L E 3

4 A MESSAGE FROM BARRY PODOLSKY Thoughts for the New Year Temple Beth El President Barry Podolsky Most of the world considers January first the beginning of the new year. We make resolutions (generally about losing weight,) but it s more of a commercial experience with parties and fireworks. For Jews, the new year begins with the celebration of Rosh HaShanah. Friends and family gather to attend services and celebrate with traditional foods (feather light matzo balls in my house.) We then enter 10 days of introspection, culminating with a fast on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur.) I d like to focus on those 10 days of introspection. Most of us don t withdraw from daily life so it s easy to pass the 10 days and not do much contemplation. But I want to encourage each of you to make time during this period for the following: CONSIDER YOUR RELATIONSHIPS. Do you want new ones? How can you enhance your existing ones? THINK ABOUT WHAT S REALLY IMPORTANT TO YOU. Are you spending enough time doing the things you believe are really important? SET GOALS. To increase the likelihood of success, write them down (or add them to your reminders on your smartphone.) Mark your calendar each of the next 12 months with the words Goal Check so you can celebrate your success or double-down on your efforts. I m offering these words because I think you will find the Temple can be a big source in helping you accomplish your goals. Consider our existing programs, but also let us know if we re missing something you want in your life. Don t be hesitant it s YOUR Temple! Give me a call. We can talk over lunch. Raymonda Tawil was Yassar Arafats' mother-in-law. They are also close friends, working together for forty years to bring understanding and empathy to both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Anthony David, author of their dual biography An Improbable Friendship: The Remarkable Lives of Israeli Ruth Dayan and Palestinian Raymonda Tawil and Their Forty-Year Peace Mission, will be speaking to us, sharing their story of forgiveness and respect. Our learning will be preceded by a reception and followed by the gorgeous and powerful words and music of the Selichot service. Members of our Temple Beth El community share the life experiences that have shaped them. Eric Lebersfeld Eric is a successful businessman, and very creative thinker. He will share his thoughts about how his creative approach has guided his life as a businessman, husband, father, and son. Avery Engelman No child should have to deal with a debilitating, lifethreatening illness. But 18 year-old Avery has shown incredible resilience and a powerful will to live that has brought her back from a double lung transplant. She will share her experience in "her journey to breathe." Lotem Eilon As Temple Beth El s Shlicha, Israel Emissary, Lotem acts as a conduit between Israeli and American Jews. Hear what she has learned this past year in America, and how she plans to strengthen the feelings of connection between Jews in Israel and America. Dana and Phillip Pina Coming from two different Christian backgrounds, Dana and Phillip chose Judaism for their lives and their children. 8 COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT In each issue of The Chronicle, we highlight one of our Temple Beth El committees and the very important work they do. The Religious Activities Committee (RAC) strives to make religious and ritual life at Temple Beth El more meaningful and more enjoyable for all. They work closely with clergy to provide input and feedback on everything from High Holy Days to Shabbat services to the WHAT S UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR COMMITTEE? We tend to attend Friday night services regularly (although this is not a requirement for committee membership!) So we see each other a lot! We spend a lot of time with the clergy and get to know them very well. We also enjoy studying together to better understand how we can best interpret and apply tradition. First, we are an advisory body to the clergy. We help them build on and improve our outstanding Shabbat and festival services. We advise the clergy and the Board when they make significant decisions pertaining to the religious life of the Temple. Second, we develop and participate in a broad spectrum of programming to improve the spiritual life of our congregation and our community. ONE ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU RE PROUD OF? We were asked to trial and advise on the new High Holy Day prayer books at an early time in their development. We attended a mock Kol Nidre service after which we all had a bite to eat! How often do you get to do that? We were proud to see the final rollout of the beautiful new prayer books, which we as a congregation had helped create. WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE? Although we are justifiably proud of our regular Shabbat and festival services, we recognize that not all Temple members have the time, opportunity or interest to attend. The Temple, however, must still be present for our entire congregation. Our vision moving forward is to provide alternatives in location, programming and connection to others, that allow our members to find spirituality in whichever way works best for them. 11 SOCIAL ACTION A Mitzvah a Month Each month, one or more Mitzvah Projects are highlighted by the Social Action Committee. Register for mitzvot online at tbeboca.org/social-action or contact Aileen Spilka in the clergy office at SEPTEMBER Book Drive For National Literacy Month, we will be collecting books for all ages, but especially children s books. Donation bins will be available on both campuses all month long. Books will be donated to The Caridad Center, which operates free medical and dental clinics that provide vital health services to the uninsured, working poor families of Palm Beach County, Florida. OCTOBER Food Drive Pick up an empty plastic bag after services on Rosh HaShanah and bring it back full of non-perishable food items on Yom Kippur. Donations will be distributed among many worthy organizations and food banks in our community, including Jacobson Family Food Pantry and Boca Helping Hands. MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER WALK Saturday, October 22, 2016 Mizner Park Registration at 6:30am, Walk at 8:30am Join Temple Beth El as we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraising walk and 5K. A U.S. national security expert, he has worked extensively on Iran s nuclear program, the Middle East, and the intersection of international energy markets and politics with U.S. national security. From , Makovsky was the Foreign Policy Director for the Bipartisan Policy Center where he managed projects on a new U.S. policy toward Iran s nuclear development, a new U.S. strategy toward Russia, and how to make strategic public diplomacy an effective tool of U.S. foreign policy in Egypt and elsewhere. Makovsky served as special assistant in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and was Director of Essential Services in the Washington office of the Coalition Provisional Authority, the postwar Allied entity that governed Iraq, advising senior Defense, National Security Council and Energy officials on Iraqi and Middle Eastern energy policy. Makovsky has written about U.S. national security issues primarily involving the Middle East for The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, The Weekly Standard, and The New Republic, and been interviewed on CNBC, CNN, Fox, NPR, Voice of America (Persian), and other media. He is also author of Churchill s Promised Land (Yale University Press), a diplomatic-intellectual history of Winston Churchill s complex relationship with Zionism. Makovsky has a Ph.D. in diplomatic history from Harvard University, an MBA in finance from Columbia Business School, and a B.A. in history from the University of Chicago. The class is based on the premise that most adults already know some Hebrew words and phrases, such as mazel tov, l chaim and shalom. 13 Introduction to Judaism Wednesdays, November 2, 2016-March 8, :00-8:30pm Schaefer Family Campus Temple Beth El is pleased to offer a weekly course taught by the clergy and other experts in the community. The course covers topics such as holidays, customs, life-cycle events, values, theology, prayers and rituals, Jewish texts, history, and Hebrew. There is an expectation that one will complete weekly reading assignments. At the end of the course, there will be a comprehensive short answer review given to those individuals who are pursuing conversion. Often, a Jewish partner, friend, or family member will choose to accompany the prospective convert to the classes. This class is also useful for non- Jews who do not intend to convert but are interested in learning more about Judaism, or for people who were born and raised as Jews but feel as though they never received a solid Jewish education. Our classrooms are full, and due to the increased demand we added an additional two-year-old classroom, making a total of four. With much anticipation, our Splash Pad opened this summer (see page 21 for pictures.) The children have enjoyed it so much; we have decided it will remain a part of our outdoor play as long as the weather permits. Thanks to our amazing Parenthood Organization, our Book Fair last year was a huge success. Many new Cindy Korshin books were ordered to enhance our library and two new Beth El Early Learning Center Listening Centers were purchased. 16 n maimonides institute for jewish learning #rsgoals* RELIGIOUS SCHOOL GOALS BY ROBIN EISENBERG, RJE One of the things I love about summer is that I get to catch up on articles and books which I gather throughout the school year. It is also a time to think about priorities in our religious school, and how we can create the best possible program for our children, teens and families. An article I read and reread this summer addressed these exact points. In Dr. Rob Weinberg s The Unique Place of Congregational Education in the Lives of Children, Teens and Families, five distinctive positive characteristics of congregational education are delineated. As we were planning for our year, our education team incorporated these strategies into the curriculum. COMMUNITY-EMBEDDEDNESS. In every Religious School lesson plan, our teachers are required to have a community building activity. This is the third year we have this as an essential part of our class time. We will also continue to send our class lists in the first sixty days of school so parents and students have easy access to connect with each other. INTERGENERATIONAL AND FAMILY LEARNING. Tami Weisman will be coordinating our Family Education Days this year. Tami is looking forward to enriching our families experiences and at the same time allowing time for families to get to know each other. CONTINUITY AND REGULARITY. This year, we are most fortunate that we have a month of Religious School prior to the High Holy Days. This does not often happen. Our classes will be able to expose children to the High Holy Days not as an afterthought but as a way of preparation. Education Team SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITY TO ADDRESS THE WHOLE PERSON. One of our goals is to ensure that the experiences of our children relates to and accounts for their lives outside of Religious School. We make every effort to view the whole child and give our students tools to take what happens in our rooms and see how it relates to their life. FLEXIBILITY AND FREEDOM TO EXPERIMENT. This year includes a number of innovations. We will be piloting Hebrew Through Movement with kindergarten through BOFTY banquet second grade at Beck Family Campus, which exposes students to Hebrew as a spoken language prior to teaching them to read. Our Religious School and Youth Engagement Programs will be much more integrated; Amanda Charson will supervise both for children in kindergarten through grade six, and Jules Wolfberg for grade seven through twelve. Our incoming ninth grade will be the first class in our new Sababa High! This class will be experiencing a new curriculum and new outof-classroom experiences with an emphasis on community. We are most excited for the year and the many special learning experiences we have planned. We look forward to seeing you soon and often as together we build our Jewish future. This no kill animal shelter is a temporary home to many dogs and cats in that area. My family and I have volunteered for more than 30 hours, walking the dogs and playing with cats. We also socialized with the animals and gave them the extra attention they needed to feel loved. Each time I left the shelter, I felt like I had made a difference in those animals lives. This experience as a whole has made me more compassionate about animals in need of a loving family. My Torah portion, Ki Teitzei is mainly about treating animals with kindness and respect. When I read my Torah portion and discovered its meaning, I wanted to work with animals as my mitzvah project. 18 THE CHRONICLE tbeboca.org

19 How I spent my summer vacation BY MIA EVANS COMMUNICATIONS VICE PRESIDENT - BOFTY (Boca's Orignal Federation of Temple Youth) What is URJ Kutz Camp? Well, this past month myself and two other BOFTY board participants (Zoe Brand and Daniel Shapiro) spent an incredible Jewish learning experience there. Kutz Camp is a four-week long summer camp housed in Warwick, New York dedicated to Jewish learning and fun. We learned things from how to be a Jewish leader to Israeli dancing. A typical day at Kutz went like this: breakfast, morning services, majors, lunch/minors, learning labs, chuggim (electives), free time, dinner, evening program, laila tov. During the first week we all got to pick our majors and minors. You could choose from six different majors: song leading, creative arts, mitzvah corps, torah corps, leadership and social action. I chose creative arts as my major and Israeli Culture/Hebrew 101 (conversational Hebrew) as my minor. In creative arts, I learned how to connect Jewish text to art. In Israeli From the amazing programs to creating unbreakable friendships, Kutz has provided me with an unforgettable summer, and new definition of community. Daniel Shapiro Culture/Hebrew 101 I learned the basics of the Hebrew language and how to converse. It s amazing how much you can learn in just a short 27 days. We spent four Shabbat weekends at Kutz and each one was enhanced by a different Jewish song leader; Alan Goodis, Josh Nelson, and Dan Nichols. All of them put up a concert for the camp every Saturday night. Josh Nelson and Dan Nichols came to my cabin one night and sang us all to sleep. For me, the best part about Kutz was experiencing all of these moments with the friends I had made. I know for a fact that I will Zoe, Daniel and Mia be friends with these people for a lifetime. All of the people that I met this summer are the future leaders of our Jewish community. Everyone was so inclusive and caring. I cannot wait to bring back what I learned and apply it back to BOFTY and our region, NFTY-STR. My summer at Kutz was unforgettable, filled with lots of laughs, memories, and friends. 20 SCHOOL OF ROCK BETH EL YOUTH BAND OFFERS FREE LESSONS TO STUDENTS GRADES 5-7! Thanks to the new Dubov Music Enrichment Endowment, Cantor Lori Shapiro and Temple Beth El will team up with School of Rock in Boca Raton to offer free music lessons to religious school students in grades 5-7 to form a Beth El Youth Band. The band will learn Jewish and secular music, play at services and Temple events and will develop Jewish leadership skills through music. School of Rock is a performance based music education program that emphasizes teamwork, building confidence and creating leaders while enjoying the love of music. Students will meet on Wednesdays from 5:30-7:00 pm at School of Rock at 141 NW 20th Street in Boca Raton. These group music lessons will focus on guitar but will also offer instruction on keyboard, bass and drums. This program FREE! However, space is limited so students will be admitted by application. AFMDA Southeast Region 3300 PGA Blvd., Suite 970 Palm Beach Gardens, FL southeast@afmda.org rosh hashanah recipe Beef Brisket Braised with Root Vegetables Ingredients 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 cups beef broth 2 medium onions, chopped 1 cup sweet red wine, such as kosher wine 3 large garlic cloves, minced 1 small can of tomato paste 1 teaspoon dried thyme 2-2 1/2 pounds boneless, first-cut beef brisket 1 pound red or Yukon gold potatoes, cut into 2 pieces 4 large carrots, peeled, cut into 2 pieces Directions Pre-Heat oven to 325 degrees, Heat vegetable oil in large, heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add chopped onions and minced garlic and cook until brown. Add tomato paste and paprika stir for about 2 minutes. Add beef stock, red wine, and thyme. Boil 5-10 minutes to blend flavors. Transfer broth mixture to a large roasting pan. Sprinkle brisket with paprika, salt and pepper and rub in. Brown brisket in sauté pan on both sides and place brisket fat side up in the roasting pan, cover and bake for 1 hour. Arrange potatoes, carrots and parsnips around brisket. Cover and bake until brisket is tender when pierced with a fork about 2 1/2 hours longer. Cool for 20 minutes. Transfer brisket to cutting board. Put aside the potatoes, some of the carrots and parsnips and than puree the rest of the sauce with the remainder of the carrots and parsnips into a thick gravy with a food processor. Reheat sauce and 2 parsnips, peeled and cut into large pieces (optional) 1 teaspoon paprika fresh parsley, minced salt and pepper to taste season sauce to taste with salt and pepper. Thinly slice brisket across the grain. Place on Platter. Arrange vegetables around brisket and ladle sauce over it. Sprinkle with fresh chopped parsley and serve. Brisket is best when prepared one or two days in advance. Cover and reheat in 350 degree oven for about 40 minutes.
