4 Berkeley Springs, Church of Christ is hosting a Bible Bowl on April 15th. At 11:00 a.m. Test question s will be based on the occurrences of the word shower s. 5 The Cracked Acorn How to Get There April 9, 2017 c.r. van arsdall I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. (Psalm 121:1) Many years ago, at the Great Falls Church of Christ, we were visited by James Jeffcoate from Cadiz, Kentucky. Brother Jeffcoate was seeking a minister position in the Washington metro area. He was a military history buff and wanted to spend some time in the Capitol area doing research. He had written some of our hymns. If you love military history, you will love this one. Soon after the June 1944 Normandy landing, the allies were caught bogged down under enemy fire in the French farmland known as the 'bocage' or hedgerows area. The high stone piles of rocks on both sides of heavy forested rows of trees had been started in Roman times. It was the object of OPERATION COBRA to by pass the roads and cut through the bocage and encircle the enemy. Every good plan has a fault. The enemy waited until the tanks mounted the 15-foot rock piles and then sent anti-tank shells though the thin belly metal of the upended tanks. Blasting a hole through these natural defenses would require tons of explosives, which were not available. Someone thought to weld posts to the tank fronts. This partially solved the problem. It all finally came down to an idea from a Tennessee hillbilly soldier by the name of Roberts. He said they should put giant teeth on the tank's front. This would work if the hedgerows were rammed at high speed. The idea was put into implementation by Sgt. Curtis G. Culin and was named the Culin Rhino. The tanks indeed looked like Rhinos. The metal used was from the enemy beach emplacements. The problem appeared to be solved. History notes that Culin Rhino was a big success. It has even reached the movies. The challenge of "how to get there from here", has always brought out the finest in people, in war or in peace. We are in a wonderful day and age with resources to build the tallest building or to span the widest river. NASA wants to go to MARS and one day this will be a reality. STAR TREK has already gone where no one has gone before, we just have to do the follow up work. I know I am heading down a lonely road but behind the facade of wealth and prosperity there are many social problems that keep coming back. In the Dickens's CHRISTMAS CAROL, Jacob Morley comes back chained to those distasteful ledgers that promised him everything but happiness. Many in our modern society can't seem to be able "to get there from here." What is the purpose of life and how to live it and to whom should we be grateful for the life that we have are vital questions. More than two thousand years ago, the people of the Biblical land must have wondered over the same questions and wondered about the answers. Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
