2 The Cracked Acorn Garage July 8, 2018 c.r. van arsdall I wish I could tame my garage. A friend's garage only has cars and maybe spider webs, not so with mine. In one of my forays to straighten up, throw away, and organize I discovered a 1962 sci-fi paperback from a summer garage sale- ALL THE TRAPS OF EARTH by Clifford Simak. One of the short stories was about a domestic robot, Richard Daniel, that had outlasted all the members of the Barrington family was now about to be auctioned off as part of the estate, refurbished and reprogrammed. His job had come to an end. Six hundred years of service & memories; the Barringtons thought him special and had given him two names unusual to robots always called by one name. When Richard Daniel discovered that reprogramming would mean the loss of his memories; he was bitter. He told the estate lawyer his memories were special. "They are all I have after six hundred years, they are my sole possession. Can you imagine, counselor, what it means to spend six centuries with one family? They are a comfort. A sustaining comfort. They make me feel important. They give me perspective and a niche. I must be myself. I've found a depth of living, a background against which my living has meaning. I could not face being anybody else!" Richard Daniel stows away on a ship bound for other worlds. The story does have a happy ending. Richard Daniel finds he has talents that help him to fit into another earth-like community. The people are willing to accept him for what he is, even though his helping hands are metallic. Memory is one of the great gifts God gave us when we became "living souls."(gen.2:7)we need our memories to go about our lives, to do our work. Memories are formed from repetitive tasks & emotional experiences. Years go by and we may be able to recall a particular family outing but can't remember the wonderful food served on that day. How memory is formed and recalled is still one of the neural mysteries of all time. As we age desperately we try to hold on to our fond thoughts that have been with us for many decades. You see this in the nursing homes. The residents love to re-tell all the memories they can recall to each and every visitor. Age & disease affect what we can remember. In the 1980 presidential campaign, Ronald Reagan repeatedly told a heartbreaking story of a WWII bomber pilot who ordered his crew to bail out after his plane had been seriously damaged by enemy fire. His young belly gunner was wounded so seriously he was unable to evacuate the bomber. The pilot told the gunner, "Never mind. We'll ride it down together." Reagan was almost in tears. The story was really from a scene in a 1944 film "A Wing and a Prayer." Reagan had retained the facts but had forgotten the source. This will affect many of us as we age, if it hasn't happened already. SCRIPTURES about remembering; ECC. 12:1-Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth. Suggested dates for the writing are before 70 A.D., 77 A.D., to and 96 A.D. Much of the book is written in symbols, Apocalyptic language, that had meaning to those whom John was writing. The letter is written in both prose and apocalyptic languages. In apocalyptic, the reader should take the words figuratively unless there is reason to take them otherwise. Apocalyptic is made up of colors, animals, numbers, bizarre events, imagery; not ordinary talk symbols. Revelation points a picture; the reader should stand back and see the whole picture: have comfort, because in the end Jesus church will win. Questions: 1. Who wrote the book of Revelation? From where? To whom? 2. How did God reveal the things contained in the book to John? What did John hear? What did he see? 3. When were the things to occur which John wrote? 4. How did Jesus free us from our sins? 5. In what manner will Jesus return? Who will see Him? 6. How long did God say He had existed? 7. Who holds the keys to death and Hades? 6 Truths that ground, Blessings that lift Occasionally, I have to sit down and take stock, remembering truths that ground me and blessings that lift me. 1. God is in control and guides all things toward the end that He desires. No one can block His will. 2. In Christ are all spiritual blessings, and I m in Christ. I can tell you how to enter as well. 3. Through the Spirit, God is near, so very near, that He abides in me. 4. In Scripture, God speaks clearly and leaves no doubt about what He is doing or what I need to do. 5. The body of Christ is where I grow and find ways to serve. 6. Life is a struggle, life in Christ is victory, and passing in to eternity to be with Him is the crowning achievement. 7. Gratitude to God changes the grumbling spirit into a joyous heart. Let thanksgiving flow often from the tongue. 8. God gives me all I need in order to do everything He desires, including time, strength, and resources. 9. Beside this man stands a godly woman who deserves, honor, praise, and glory for her dedication, faith, and loyalty. 10.God uses small things to accomplish great objectives, humble people to glorify himself, and hidden moments to proclaim His great acts. 11.God gives a purpose to cover every action, a strength for every challenge, and a solace for every tear. 12.God loves freely. Life can be an exercise in imitating that love.

8 The Freedom Jesus Gives Defining Jesus kind of freedom July 8, Peter 2:17-21 Scriptures C Freedom C Freedom C Freedom Lunch Time Joey: I don t want to take my little sister fishing. Last time I didn t catch a single fish. Mother: I ll talk to her. This time she won t make any noise. Joey: It wasn t the noise. She ate all the bait! Click It or Ticket A lady who was speeding was pulled over to the side of the road by an officer. She didn t have her seat belt on, so as soon as she stopped, she quickly slipped it on before the officer got to her window. After talking to her about speeding, the officer said, I see you are wearing your seat belt. Do you believe in wearing it at all times? Oh, yes I do, officer, she replied. Well, asked the officer, do you always loop it through your steering wheel like that? Unexpected Prize A salesman talked my uncle into buying 10,000 personalized pens for his business with the promise that he would be eligible to win a 32-foot yacht. A born gambler, my uncle agreed. Well, he won, and a few weeks after the pens arrived, his prize showed up: a 12-inch plastic yacht with 32 plastic feet glued to the bottom. A Real Gut-Buster A woman noticed her husband standing on the bathroom scale, sucking in his stomach. Ha! That s not going to help, she said. Sure, it does, he said. It s the only way I can see the numbers. Lunch Time Amy went to her first show at an art gallery. One painting that caught her eye quickly was solid black with some blobs of yellow paint splattered all over it. The next painting was a dull gray color that had drips of purple paint streaked across it. Amy walked over to the artist and said, I don t understand your paintings. The artist said, I paint what I feel inside me. Amy responded, Have you ever tried Alka-Seltzer?
