10 Casablanca CASABLANCA is the largest city in Morocco, on the Atlantic coast of the country. It has about 3.7 million inhabitants. It is the largest port and the largest industrial and commercial center of Morocco. The city has a main square, from which radiates all the avenues. In general, the buildings constitute a French version of the Arab-Andalusian architecture, white with simple lines, of special interest being the area of the United Nations Plaza, where the largest infrastructure is located. Casablanca is in the place of the old Anfa, locality destroyed in 1468 by the Portuguese. In 1515 these founded the present city with the name White House. Destroyed by the earthquake of 1755, it was rebuilt by the Sultan of Morocco in At that time many Spanish merchants settled in the city passing White House to be known as Casablanca. It was occupied in 1907 by the French who promoted its development. During World War II, in January 1943, it hosted a conference between US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Casablanca has one of the largest artificial ports in the world, being an important business and commerce site. The main industries are fishing, glassware, furniture, building materials and tobacco. There are several areas of commerce, where various types of products are sold, namely handicrafts. Meknes

11 Meknes Meknès is a Moroccan Imperial cities and is situated about 70 km away from Fez. With several monuments, the historical centre of Meknes is on UNESCO's list of world heritage. One of the reasons for this distinction is the simplicity of the original constructions maintained over the centuries. It was in the 17th century that the Sultan Moulay Ismail decided to transform Meknes in one of the most beautiful and powerful imperial cities of Morocco. The impressive 40 km of walls protected the monuments to this day. There are plenty of mosques in Meknes, which earned him the name of "city of a hundred minarets". The whole city is extremely pleasant to dive completely into everyday life in Morocco. But there are some highlights of places to see and visit in Meknes. The great mosque, founded probably in the 12th century, has fantastic carved gates. The medina of Meknes deserves a lengthy tour to get to know the streets and find the ruins of the Royal Palace. In the medina all happens. El-Hedime square, between the old city and the imperial area of Meknès, is the maximum exponent of agitation, with fire-eaters, storytellers, animal trainers and jugglers entertain Moroccans and tourists. Not to be missed even in Meknes Bab Mansour gate at the entrance of the city proper, built in the early 18TH century. Some say it's the most beautiful gate of the world. Very close is the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, whose Mosque is open to non-muslims. The regional Ethnographic Museum in Meknès, in the Palace Dar Jamaï, has a fabulous Andalusian garden and show pieces that are testimony to the cultural wealth of the Kingdom of Morocco. Just 30 km from Meknes is the impressive Roman archaeological site of Volubilis, also world heritage UNESCO. The trip is done through the prosperous fertile fields that produce cereals, olives and grapes. Fez FEZ (in Arabic: Fas) is a city of Morocco. It is located in the central-north of the country and has about 950 thousand inhabitants (census of 2004). It was founded in 808 AD by Idrís II, having been the capital of Morocco for several periods. It is the city where the University of Karueein is located, the oldest university in the world still in operation, created in the early days of the city (859). Fez is the third largest city in Morocco, after Casablanca and Rabat. It lies in a valley at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Fez was one of the most important cities in the world, located on caravan routes linking Saharan empires such as Timbuktu with the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. It is probably the most fantastic and ancient imperial city (Fez, Marrakesh, Meknes and Rabat are known as imperial cities, because they have all been, in some part of the country's history, its capital). Today it is an important cultural and spiritual center, and the third holy city of Islam, after Mecca and Medina. One of the most comprehensive and comprehensive works on the city's history, its architectural and artistic treasures, its numerous sages and saints, is Titus Burckhardt's Fez City. The city was portrayed in the telenovela The Clone, first broadcast in 2001/2002 and resubmitted in In 810 was built the Mosque of Qarawiyyin or Karueein, and remains to this day the largest and oldest mosque in Africa. It has since been that the city was mainly occupied by Muslims. From 1170 to 1180, Fez was the largest city in Morocco and the main city of the Kingdom of Fez. It was the religious and scientific center of the Western world, where Christians and Muslims from all over Europe and Morocco came to study. After the Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula in 1492 there was an exodus of Muslims and it was from that time that the population of the city increased. It was in 1548 that Fez became part of the Moroccan empire and in

12 1579 the conquests of the Moroccan empire, which had been initiated by Suleiman the Magnificent, ended. During the Alawite dynasty in 1649, Fez became a major trading center in Berber. Fez was also the capital of Morocco at various times, but in 1912 much of Morocco fell into French influence and Rabat was chosen as the nation's Capital. Rabat RABAT Rabat, Rabat or Rabba is the capital of Morocco. It is located on the Atlantic coast. It has about 1.7 million inhabitants. The city was founded in 1150 by the Almohad Sultan Abd al-mu'min, who built a fortress, a mosque and a residence there. It became an imperial city in 1660 and was the capital of the French protectorate of Morocco between 1912 and The districts of Rabat are divided between the nobles, who are located along the great avenues, and the poor, located in the most distant areas of the city. They are spread out in fan form and are socially very different. Uday and Medina, the most traditional neighborhoods, are located as a backbone near the coast.. Upper-class neighborhoods, such as the Les Orangers, Mabel, or Agdal Hay Riad Hassan, boast mansions and luxurious houses and houses houses of ambassadors. This is the place of choice for diplomatic residences. This vast, airy flat with lush vegetation and ocean mist contrasts with the narrower islands near the coast. Administrative city, it extends avenues of embassies from across borders, bringing to the city people of passage and administrative excellence. In Rabat are taken the great decisions of the country, in the parliament History of Rabat (former name: Chellah) began with an agreement in the 3rd century AD40, the Romans took Chellah and changed their name to Colony Hall. In 250, the Romans left the colony. In 1146, Abd al-mu'min turned Rabat into a large-scale fortress for use as a point of attack on Spain. In 1170, due to its military importance, the city was renamed Ribatu l-fath, which means "fortress of victory". Yaqub al-mansur, another Almohad sultan, transferred the capital of his empire to Rabat. He built walls from Rabat to the Casba of Oudaias. However, Yaqub died and construction stopped. The remains of a large unfinished mosque, and its imposing minaret, the Hassan Tower, are still there today. After Yaqub's death, the empire declined. The Almóada Empire lost control of its possessions in Spain and in much of its African territory, which led to its total collapse. In the thirteenth century, much of Rabat's economic power collapsed. Some time later, the Nasrids, who had been expelled from Spain in the early sixteenth century, colonized the region, which helped boost Rabat's growth.

13 Soon after the formation of the republic, there were several barbaric and pirate attacks. They tried to establish control over the pirates, but they could not. Muslims continued to attempt to control pirates for many years until the Republic collapsed in Even after the collapse of the republic, pirates continued to use the port of Rabat, which led to the bombardment of the city by Austria in The French invaded Morocco in 1912 and established a protectorate. The French administrator of Morocco, General Hubert Lyautey, decided to transfer the capital of the country again to Rabat. When Morocco achieved independence in 1956 the then king of Morocco, chose to remain in the capital Rabat. Even today King Mohamed VI establishes his base in Rabat being the administrative capital of Morocco Marrakech MARRAKECH is a city in southwestern Morocco, close to the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. It is known as the "red city", the "pearl of the south" or the "door of the south". The city has the country's largest souk, as well as one of Africa's busiest squares, Djemaa el Fna, home to acrobats, water vendors, dancers, musicians and food stalls. Like many North African cities and the Middle East, Marrakech has a fortified city (the Almedina or Medina) and an adjacent modern city (called Gueliz). It is served by Ménara International Airport (RAK) and by rail link with Casablanca and the north of the country. One possible source pointed to the place name is the Berber expression mur (n) akuch, which means "Land of God". The name of the city is the origin of the toponym "Morocco". Marrakech is the second largest city in Morocco, after Casablanca, and was known by the old travelers as "City of Morocco". Before the arrival of the Almoravids in the 11th century, the region was ruled from the city of Aghmat. When he decided to erect a new capital, the Almoravid chief, Abu Becre ibn Omar, chose to build it on the plain, in a neutral place between the territory of two tribes that competed for the honor of receiving the new city. The work began in May 1070, but Abu Becre was called to extinguish a revolt in the Sahara in January 1071, so that Marrakech was terminated by his replacement and future successor, Iuçufe ibn Tachfin. The heyday of the city was under the direction of Abu Yusuf Ya'qub al-mansur, third Almohad Sultan, who initiated the construction of the mosque of Kutubia and of a new Kasbah. Before the reign of Moulay Ismail, Marrakech was the capital of Morocco. For centuries, Marrakech was known for its "seven saints". When Sufism was at the height of its popularity in the reign of Moulay Ismail, the festival of the seven saints was founded. The tombs of several well-known people were transferred to the city in order to attract pilgrims. The "seven saints" include Sidi Bel Abbas (patron of the city), Sidi Muhammad al-jazuli, Sidi Abu al-qasim Al-Suhayli, Cadi Ayyad ben Moussa and Abdallah al-ghazwani. At the end of century XVII, the current Alauíta dynasty happened to the Saadians. The throne was successively transferred to Fez and Meknes. In the first half of the twentieth century, the city was controlled by Thami El Glaoui, lord of the Atlas and Pasha of Marrakech. The establishment of the French protectorate in Morocco in 1912 put an end to a period of civil wars. The city has many monuments considered a World Heritage Site, which makes it the main tourist attraction in the country.
