2 Ummah Welfare Trust (UWT) is a UK registered international relief and development charity. Established in the year 2001, UWT operates in over twenty countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. UWT aims to relieve the suffering of the poor and alleviate poverty across the world. By the grace of Almighty Allah, Ummah Welfare Trust is able to ensure that every penny donated reaches its intended destination. 3 PAKISTAN FLOODS: THE AFTERMATH The most destructive floods in a hundred years is how experts have described last Julyʼs devastating downpour. It is difficult to conceptualise the enormity of the devastation. The flood water unleashed from the River Indus engulfed an area of the size of England. The floods quickly spread across the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Punjab and Sindh. The surge did not discriminate in what came in its path. It has already claimed 1,900 lives and affected over 20 million people. Homes and farmlands have been totally submerged. The waters swept away 6 million acres of crops which included fruit, wheat, cotton and rice. The loss of over 1.2 million large animals and 6 million poultry is having a crippling effect on the country s economy. Food prices have soared raising the already high inflation rate. The human cost and suffering is incalculable. Families have been severed, communities have been uprooted. Schools and places of worship have been completely submerged under water. Their entire way of life is threatened. With the outbreak of acute diarrhoea, acute respiratory tract infections, skin infections and malaria, the chances of survival are becoming more and more dire. The floods have destroyed health facilities and access to clean water. Feedback Report

4 PHASE ONE: EMERGENCY RELIEF Muslims across the UK rose up to the challenge. An emergency fundraising campaign was launched by UWT. UWT raised a record 3.2 million within weeks of the floods. The generous donations of the Muslim community have allowed us to initiate an effective relief operation in the affected areas. 4 THE RELIEF EFFORT HQ The Ummah Children Academy (UCA) located in Nowshera, was only yards away from the flood water. It is currently being used as the Head Quarters for the relief efforts. UWT have been able to implement a rigorous relief operation from UCA because of its strategic location. UCA was able to open its doors to flood victims and has been providing emergency accommodation. 5 PHASE ONE: EMERGENCY RELIEF Emergency relief comprised of the following projects: With your help we have provided meals for over 160,000 people. MEDICAL CAMPS WITH MOBILE AMBULANCE SERVICE The installation of these make shift clinics were vital in this phase. A total of nine Medical camps were set up in Nowshera, Charsadda, Sindh and Swat. The camps provided emergency treatment and were aimed at preventing an outbreak of waterborne diseases. We have had a record number of people benefiting from this particular service. Over 68,000 men, women and children have received treatment since the floods began. COOKED FOOD PROJECT The water washed away all hope. People lost their homes, food, crops and animals. UWT provided two hot meals a day during the month of Ramadan. This enabled our brothers and sisters to eat during Suhur and Iftar. We targeted the most affected regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Nowshera, Sindh and Punjab. With your help we have provided meals for over 160,000 people. Whoever offers a meal to his Muslim brother at the time of iftar, he receives as much reward as he (the fasting person) has earned. Nothing becomes less of the reward of those he offered a meal to. 6 PHASE ONE: EMERGENCY RELIEF UWT TENT VILLAGE UWT Tent Villages are currently providing shelter for 2,879 families and 16,756 individuals. 6 A team was deployed to erect tents to provide basic shelter and privacy for families. Each tent accommodated up to eight people. A total of thirteen tent villages were erected within Nowshera, Charsadda, Deri Ismail Khan, Swat and Punjab. Before the erection of these tents people were forced to live in the open. These tents have provided short term shelter. We will need to provide long term housing solutions before winter approaches. Feedback Report 2011 Each family was supplied with an emergency pack which included essential items: MEDICATION CLOTHING FOOD ITEMS 10kg Ghee, 10kg Rice, 10kg Pulses, 40kg Flour, 4kg Salt, 2 Boxes Of Matches, 15 Kg Sugar, 900 Litres Of Mineral Water & Burning Material. UTENSILS 6 Tea Cups, 6 Large Plates, 6 Small Plates, 6 Spoons, Jug With 6 Cups, 1 Basket, 1 Small Cauldron, 1 Large Cooking Spoon, a Kettle and a Water Cooler.

7 PHASE ONE: EMERGENCY RELIEF 24,000 Packages Distributed The scale of the damage has made it difficult to operate in certain regions. UWT has distributed light packages in these areas. A total of 18,000 packages have already been distributed and an additional 6000 packages have been allocated for distribution. 8 2,000,000 Winter Appeal was launched to help 20,000 families The Harsh Realities winter of Winter survival kit Ummah Welfare Trust launched a Winter Survival Kit appeal to help those suffering in freezing conditions in Pakistan. The winter was particularly harsh in the flood stricken areas. Snow fall in the depth of winter is often 5 meters deep in some regions with temperatures reaching minus 15 degrees centigrade. UWT initially distributed 10,000 Winter Aid Kits amongst the families who were still living in the temporary Tent Villages. This number was increased to 20,000 and the project was upgraded and renamed as Winter Survival Kits as the regions experienced an increase in deaths. Each Winter Survival Kit included 3 iron beds, 3 quilts, 3 mattresses, 3 pillows and 3 sets of warm clothing for each family. The cost per kit was 100. 9 PHASE TWO: Reconstruction The relief operation has now moved onto the second phase. This phase consists of medium and long term projects that will help prevent damage of such a scale in the future. It will help victims rebuild their lives and will hopefully allow those who are displaced to return to their villages. The appeal has now been raised to 10 million. UWT will be implementing an extensive reconstruction programme that aims to rebuild entire villages in the regions that were worst affected by the floods. 12 PHASE TWO: RECONSTRUCTION Masjid Construction "Whoever builds a Masjid, desiring thereby Allah's pleasure, Allah builds for him the like of it in Paradise." [Bukhari] Most of the Masajid have been left unfit for purpose. It is estimated that the reconstruction of Masajid will cost approximately 7 per square foot. Masajid with integrated Madrasahs will be built in the proposed villages. These amenities will meet the educational and spiritual needs of the victims and play a crucial role in rehabilitating the flood victims. Provision of Clothing, Blankets & Kitchen Utensils Until new homes have been built, the flood victims in our care will continue to live in the Tent Villages. It is important that everyone is provided with warm clothing, blankets, kitchen utensils and dry food rations. Any Muslim who gives a Muslim a garment to wear will be in Allah's safekeeping as long as a shred of it remains on him. 13 Donkey and Cart Project PHASE TWO: RECONSTRUCTION The land has now become infertile which will have a lasting impact on the agricultural communities in the region. A cost effective project has been developed to help victims to generate income to support their families. Villages will be provided with Donkeys and Carts to help them earn a living. The Donkey and Cart may be used to transport goods, provide various services to businesses. The Cart alone may also be used as a stall to sell goods to the public. This project will cost 200 Cart Donkey 80 Tube Wells The water supply in the affected regions has been contaminated. UWT have been distributing clean water as a short term solution. The installation of Tube Wells in the new villages will be a permanent solution. Please take part in this virtuous act. Feedback will be provided. A Tube Well can be installed at a cost of 600. 14 PHASE TWO: RECONSTRUCTION The cost of one House is 2000 Including labour and materials. "...Allah will aid a servant (of His) so long as the servant aids his brother..." [Muslim] HOUSE RECONSTRUCTION The floods have swept away entire settlements of mud-brick houses. Experts suggest that the surge has destroyed over 1.8 million homes causing their inhabitants to flee for higher ground. Schools, hospitals and places of worship have been washed away. The next priority is to provide long term shelter. Each village will consist of 100 houses. These houses are designed to withstand the impact of future floods. The keys of over 60 new houses have already been handed over to families who were worst affected. Much of the raw material from the damaged homes is still available. This is being recycled and will lower the building costs. The reduction in costs will allow for help to reach more people. 14 Feedback Report 2011

16 CASE STUDY: The Plea Of A Widow Sister Shah Zari is from Mohallah Zareen Abad, Nowshera. She lost her husband Saleem four years ago. She has been bringing up her four children, Abid, Zeeshan, Ihtisham and Hamid. Her eldest son Abid who is now ten and Zeeshan have been working on a masonry site in Nowshera. They pulled donkey carts all day to help provide for their family. Shah Zari s home was damaged by the floods. She approached the UWT team at Wisal Abad and appealed for help. One who provides for widows and the poor is like the one who strives in the way of Allah, stands in prayer by night and fasts during the day. 17 Shaykh Ahmed Ali with Zakir Ullah I and the guardian of an orphan will be in the Garden like these two (His two fingers) CASE STUDY: Zakirʼs Plight [Bukhari] Zakir Ullah is a ten year old orphan from Wisal Abad. He has two younger siblings. His father, who was terminally ill, died a year ago. Zakir explains that his family sold all that they had to pay for their father s treatment. Their uncle donated a plot of land which allowed them to build a mud-brick house. The floods destroyed their house and washed away the little that they had. Zakir, along with his mother and other siblings took refuge in Ummah Tent Village, Risalpur. They have no means of building their own house. Zakir is too young to work and provide for his family. His mother needs to take care of her young children. UWT are currently building a house for Zakir s family but we need your continued support to help those who have similar stories to tell. 18 18 UWT launched a nationwide fundraising campaign in the UK to buy gifts for the children of the Pakistan floods. It gave an opportunity for young children to save up and encourage their families to donate. Maktabs and Madrasahs across the UK took part in a week long competition. The children managed to raise over 30,000 which brought immense joy and happiness to hundreds of children in the temporary Tent Villages set up by UWT. This unique project brought together Madrasah Teachers, parents and children and made a real difference to young people in Pakistan. It also brought a huge sense of satisfaction to pupils who took part. Feedback Report 2011 UWT presented goody bags to all the children who took part in celebrating their outstanding work. 19 PRIZES The child that raised the most money was given a trophy during Madrasah assembly. The Madrasah was also presented with a trophy and certificate of appreciation in recognition of their support. Kidz For Kidz Competition Shaykh Adam ibn Yusuf, UWT s representative from the UK and internationally renowned speaker, Shaykh Ahmed Ali, travelled to Pakistan to hand the gifts to the children in person. The children were given 500 rupees each in addition to the Eid Box that contained toys, clothes and snacks. A total of 3000 packs were distributed among the children of the Tent Villages set up by UWT. "The best house among the Muslims is the house in which orphans are well treated. The worst house among the Muslims is the house in which orphans are ill treated. I and the guardian of the orphan will be in the Garden like that (indicating towards his two fingers)." [Bukhari] WHAT NEXT? UWT now aims to work in partnership with mainstream schools. This would involve working with Citizenship teachers to enhance their Global Citizenship curriculum. Some schools in London have already agreed to take part. This was the best Eid I have ever celebrated. I have never brought so much happiness to so many people. 20 QURBANI 2010 This year UWTʼs Pakistan team distributed 2300 small and 1050 large animals. 20 The meat was distributed throughout the days of Eid among the flood victims as well as the poor and most vulnerable. UWT ensured that the meat reached people affected by the recent floods as well as victims of the 2005 earthquake. The Team also targeted disabled people as well as orphans and widows. This year, Shaykh Ahmed Ali was invited to monitor the extensive Qurbani Programme and was very pleased with the manner in which the project was co-ordinated.
