2 PRAYER FOR THE CAMPAIGN With ecclesiastical approval O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the holy sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in thanksgiving for your favors, in reparation for my sins, for the intentions of all my relatives and friends, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father and the Archbishop. In a special way, I offer them that you may build ourhouse, and guard our city, that St. Mary s Church and School may be a place where we grow as your disciples and thus strengthen our community. Let us pray. Direct, we beg you, O Lord, our actions by your holy inspirations, and grant that we may carry them out with your graciousassistance, that every prayer and work of ours may begin always withyou, and through you be happilyended. Amen.

3 LETTER FROM FATHER CIBELLI Dear Friends in Christ, For 260 years, St. Mary s has been forming Christian disciples. From our beginnings as a mission under the care of the Jesuit Fathers from Conewago, to the construction of our beautiful church in 1828, to the establishment of our school in 1874, to years of great expansion in the 1940s and 1950s and again in the 2000s, each generation has made a mark on this community by means of spiritual, financial, material and physical sacrifices. For 260 years, St. Mary s Church and School has been a center for people of all ages and backgrounds to come to know and love our Lord Jesus Christ, and we have a special duty towards our children. Whether we are their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, teachers, friends, or priests, we are blessed to have so many children who call St. Mary s their home in one way or another. Striving to form them as Christ s disciples is our chief duty. Giving them a safe and attractive place to do so is an important aid in fulfilling that duty. As we look to strengthen our efforts to form Christian disciples including ourselves! we have the opportunity to leave our mark on this sacred ground. We have the opportunity to give our children and their children a place where they canbecomemoreandmorethepeoplegod made them to be. We have the opportunity to help them make a difference in our society, especially right here in Hagerstown. For us to succeed, however, it must be God who does the work through us. In Psalm 127 we read, Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build. Unless the Lord guard the city, in vain does the guard keep watch. To that end we ask the Lord to, Build our House, Guard our City. In doing so, we pray that the Lord may be the one who guides all our actions so that St. Mary s, the City of Hagerstown, and all of Washington County may flourish according to God s plan. In that spirit, I would like to ask you to join me and the whole St. Mary community in furnishing our campus with some much needed improvements. This summer we will begin work to provide a well equippedequipped gymnasium, a modern kitchen, an attractive dining hall, and a beautiful brick wall. In the next few years we will replace our church s air conditioning system and the roofs of several of our buildings, including the church and school. Thank you for being part of the St. Mary community. Your prayerful commitment is what allows our church and school to flourish and contribute to the broader Hagerstown community with God as our guardian and master builder. 4 ST. MARY S HISTORY OUR PARISH First church built in Current church built in 1828 followed by several renovations OUR SCHOOL In 1941, much of the church was destroyed by fire and rebuilt by Msgr. J Francis Leary and, in 1962, by Msgr. Daniel McGrath. Thirty six pastors have served the parish. Msgr. Robert Passarelli had the longest tenure from In 1874, the Sisters of St. Joseph opened the first Catholic School in Hagerstown. In 1931, the school name changed from St. Joseph Academy to Saint Mary Catholic School. In 1885 the school was turned over to th School the S h l Sisters Si t off Notre Dame and enrollment increased. 7 WAYS OFGIVING You may make commitments to the Build Our House, Guard Our City Capital Campaign in the form of cash, pledges, securities, charitable IRA, and matching gifts. Pledges may be filled over a five year period, in whatever increments are most appropriate for you.* CASH You may make an outright gift by cash or check. Cash gifts are tax deductible as provided by law. PLEDGES You may make a pledge to Build Our House, Guard Our City to be paid over five years (60 months). Pledges allow you to contribute a larger gift than would be possible in one tax year. SECURITIES A gift of securities such as stock, bonds, or mutual funds may offer advantages over a cash gift. You pay no capital gains tax for the gifted securities and can claim a federal income tax charitable deduction for the full, appreciated value eof the securities, up to 60 percent of your adjusted gross income. If the value of the gift exceeds this limit, you may carry over the excess deduction for up to five additional years. CHARITABLE IRA If you are 70 ½ years of age or older you have to take a mandatory distribution from your Individual Retirement Account. You may donate up to $100,000 from your IRA to St. Mary and it will not be included in your taxable income. Your gift can also count toward the IRA s required minimum distribution. This is a wonderful way to turn mandatory into meaningful! MATCHING GIFTS Many employees offer to match your gift or pledge and you will receive credit for the contribution. Please contact your Human Resources Department to see if St. Mary qualifies as a designated charity. LIFE INSURANCE St. Mary may be named as the beneficiary and owner of an insurance policy or ownership of an already existing policy may be transferred to St. Mary. The latter method may provide attractive income tax benefits. LIFE INCOME GIFTS There are many ways that one can make a gift to St. Mary and receive income for life in return. Through one of a number of planned gift options, the donor can place cash, securities or other assets in trust. Upon the donor s death (or that of a beneficiary) or at some predetermined time, the trust terminates and the funds are transferred to St. Mary. These life income gifts sometimes provide income, capital gain and/or estate benefits.
