Ghāmdi Tribe (الغامدي ( Al-Ghāmdi Singular The tribal name Ghāmdi (or Ghāmid) is related to the Arabic verb to sheathe a sword or to cover with mercy. Let us pray that this tribe would experience the fullness of God s mercy and grace in Christ Jesus. The traditional homeland (dīrah) of the Ghāmdi Though the traditional homeland and capital of the tribe continues to be the Al-Baha area, the Ghāmdi are now present in large numbers throughout Saudi Arabia, especially the Western region (Hejaz) and the Eastern Province. The Ghāmdi tribe was well known even before the dawn of Islam. It is related that delegations from the Ghāmdi tribe who had converted to the new religion came from their southwestern
homeland to visit Mohammed. Some members of the tribe participated in the early Muslim conquests throughout Arabia and abroad. Today a large number of Ghāmdi are employed in the armed forces of Saudi Arabia. The tribe has a reputation in Saudi Arabia for being fond of military service. The farming of honey and produce remains a major source of income for the tribe, although today many Ghāmdi are employed in business and industry in the major cities (Jeddah, Dammam, and Riyadh). Āl Ḥiba tribe (left) and Zinād Al-Ghamid (right) reconcile after a fight between two tribesmen. Four of the nineteen alleged 9/11 hijackers were from the Al-Ghāmdi tribe: (1) Hamza Al- Ghāmdi, (2) Saeed Al-Ghāmdi, (3) Ahmed Al-Ghāmdi, and (4) Ahmed Al-Haznawi. They were considered to be some of the more religious among the group of hijackers. All of them were from Al-Baha, their tribal capital. Let us pray for the families of these hijackers, that God would use them as ministers of peace and mercy throughout Saudi Arabia and the world. Henna is an age-old tradition in Saudi Arabia
The Ghāmdi tribe has close affinity with the Zahrāni tribe, both culturally and historically, both tribes tracing their roots to the ancient tribe, Al-Azd. The two tribes share neighboring homelands in the southwestern region of Saudi Arabia. Tribal Divisions One of the largest tribes in the kingdom, the Ghāmdi tribe is classified into the following three divisions: (1) the Ghāmid Sirāt, a settled branch that inhabits the region of the Hejaz (or Sirāt) mountains, (2) the Ghāmid Al-Bādia, historically a nomadic or semi-nomadic group inhabiting the desert (bādia) and lowland region immediately to the east of the Hejaz highlands, and (3) the Ghāmid Al-Zinād who live in the Tihama coastal plains, the Ghāmid Az-Zinād highlands, and the Shada mountains. Within these divisions, there are two general groups: a settled (ḥaḍir) group based in the towns and cities of the Hejaz mountains, and a nomadic or semi-nomadic group (bedū) of the valleys and lowlands. Ghāmid Sirāt Banu Khuthaym Banu Abdullah Al-Ashrāf Binna mān Āl Simāḥa Āl Sa adān Al-Shaqr Al-Țaraf Al-Fara a Al-Qifarah Al-Qahab Al-Musā idah Al-Malālīḥ Al-Kibasah Bin Dhabiyān Banu Kabīr Al-Rahwah (Āl Mu jal) Banu Al-Jurashy (Baljurashi) Banu Al-Shahm (Balshahm) Al-Jabāl Al-Marzūq Āl Ḥasharah Āl Hays Ḥawālah
Ghāmid Al-Bādiah Al-Zuhrān Al-Rifā ah Al-Ghāthiyah Āl Ghanīm Al-Ḥānātish Al-Ba șah Al-Qa ātirah Al-Luqiyān Bani Sayd Al-Ḥillah Al-Hijāhijah Al-Mishāniyah Al-Sunaināt Al-Buqārīn Al-Maḥāyah Āl Sa ad Banu Kabīr Al-Bādiah Al- Ubaidāt Al-Zuwāya Āl Țalib Al-Qināz ah Āl Muslim Al-Bishābishah Al-Da ājīn Ghāmid Al-Zinād Ghāmid Al-Zinād Al-Bijād Al-Jubailah Al-Jummān Al- Ḥamarāt Al-Ḥilḥilah Al-suflī Al-Ḥawāh Difah Al-Zughl Al-Dhafīr Āl Ațif Al-Fuqahā Al-Mușāni a Al-Hutāfira
Al-Buțāț The Sheikh of the Ghāmid Al-Zinād tribe, Uthmān Al-Zinady and his son Tribal Customs The Ghāmdi tribe was known to practice al-thār,(الثأر) a solemn pledge to protect a guest within their territory. Any hostility toward the guest was considered to be an assault against the honor of the host tribe. The host was required by tradition to retaliate, even if the hostile party was of the same tribe or family. Al-thār was considered to be an expression of honor, hospitality, and loyalty.
A group from the Bādiat Ghāmid, the Bedouin branch of the Ghāmdi tribe in traditional dance People to Know Ali Bin Abdullah Al-Ghāmdi: a member of the royal Al-Shura advisory council of Saudi Arabia. Sa ad Al-Ghāmdi: a famous Imam and reader of the Quran. Ahmed Qasem Al-Ghāmdi: The former head of Mecca s Religious Police (or Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice); known for his controversial statements that music and the mixing between sexes are permitted in Islam, positions traditionally rejected by ultra-conservative Muslims in Saudi Arabia. Prayer Points: As the tribal name means to cover with mercy and to sheath a sword of judgment, let us pray the following verses together on their behalf: Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted. (Psalm 25:16)
Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds. (Psalm 36:5 And David built there an altar to the LORD and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings and called on the LORD, and the LORD answered him with fire from heaven upon the altar of burnt offering. Then the LORD commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. (Read 1 Chronicles 21) We pray that the Ghāmdi tribe would be reconciled with God, that they would find true peace in Christ, and that they would give the King of kings their full allegiance. We pray that their commitment to the way of Christ would be even greater than the loyalty of al-thar (see Tribal Customs section). Pray that the Ghāmdi tribe, known for its fondness of military service, would fight the good fight of faith and that they would lay hold of eternal life.
