1 Sunday 31 December 2017 The Gospel Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travellers, they went a day s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety. He said to them, Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father s house? But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favour. For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. Now the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar. For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. It is even more obvious when another priest arises, resembling Melchizedek, one who has become a priest, not through a legal requirement concerning physical descent, but through the power of an indestructible life. For it is attested of him, You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek. There is, on the one hand, the abrogation of an earlier commandment because it was weak and ineffectual (for the law made nothing perfect); there is, on the other hand, the introduction of a better hope, through which we approach God. The Catechism The Epistle So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called the uncircumcision by those who are called the circumcision a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God. Eph 2:11-22 Is it possible to pray always? Praying is always possible because the time of the Christian in the time of the risen Christ who remains "with us always" (Matthew 28:20). Prayer and Christian life are therefore inseparable: "It is possible to offer frequent and fervent prayer even at the market place or strolling alone. It is possible also in your place of business, while buying or selling, or even while cooking." (Saint John Chrysostom) What is the prayer of the Hour of Jesus? It is called the priestly prayer of Jesus at the Last Supper. Jesus, the High Priest of the New Covenant, addresses it to his Father when the hour of his sacrifice, the hour of his "passing over" to him is approaching.

3 Article of the Week Finding Jesus in others If you cannot find Christ in the beggar at the Church door, you will not find him in the chalice ~ St John Chrysostom. How many times have we turned a blind eye to a drunk or homeless person that we happen to see on our way? It s probably common also to look away when a beggar approaches us, or unashamedly asks for money. Let s be honest, we ve all done this at least once, if not more, in our lives. If we as Christians remember that God created every human being in His own image and likeness and then He breathed His Spirit into each one, we would never turn away from another person, whether in need or not. I m referring to every person in our lives, the ones we know and the ones we don t know. It s not easy to see Jesus in the person that bullies you, persecutes you or abuses you. It s impossible! But that is what s asked of us, to find Jesus in every person we meet in our lives, even the most obnoxious and unlovable of all. How can we do this? A friend of mine grew up surrounded by abuse physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. He is now older and wiser, having developed a strong personal relationship with Christ and living a sacramental life of grace in the Church. When I asked him how he was able to overcome his past, he didn t hesitate to respond: God has been my refuge and strength. Praying daily with Our Lady by his side, and receiving the Sacraments regularly, he grew in faith, with compassion and mercy for others. He put himself in the other person s position to help him understand why they acted as they did. Consequently, over time he was able to forgive his abusers, and he felt the pain in their darkness, not knowing the love of Christ themselves. This is how he was able to find Jesus in them the Jesus who was alone and abandoned - and he was therefore able to love them despite being unlovable people. Finding Jesus in the Temple was a glorious moment, after losing him for 3 days. Imagine losing Jesus in our anxieties and fears, and then suddenly finding Him in the person who shows you immense kindness and fraternal love now, go forth and be that person of consolation, so that others may find Jesus in YOU. Salwa Elias Teen s Corner Senior s Corner What a year it has been! The Teens ended the year of 2017 with a wonderful, Christmas Masquerade Ball on the 16th of December. All the Teens were dressed to impress and masks of all different shapes, colours and sizes could be seen right across the room. The Leaders all played the role of Service to the Teens as they brought out their meals, and refilled their drinks. Just like professional waiters and waitresses, only without the training. Once the formalities were over and done with, it was time to party. The atmosphere was amazing once the music was turned up, and the dancing began. It was a night not to be missed and never forgotten. On behalf of all of us here at OLOL Maronite Flame Teens, we'd like to thank our very own Chaplain, Deacon Danny Nouh for his constant support and prayers throughout the year. And as always, a massive thank you goes out to all the Teens. If it wasn't for you all wanting grow and learn more about the faith, we wouldn't be here today. We'd like to wish you and your families a very safe and blessed New Year. Looking forward to seeing you all back in February 2018! But dont forget about Camp in 2 weeks! Fire up! God is good! AJ Stephan The Blessings of this Holy Season be upon us all dear brothers and sisters, the Senior's Committee celebrated our annual Christmas party and it was a beautiful and successful event. We gathered with our precious seniors under the guidance of Father Bernard and Sister Guitta, we then celebrated the Holy Mass followed by lunch and entertainment. It was so wonderful to see so many of our seniors and see smile on their faces. We are on holidays now and look forward to seeing everyone in February. 4 Father Antoun Bou Antoun People call us Father (ya Abouna) and it is up to us to truly be a Father figure to the people Fr. Antoun was born on 12 October 1933 to Antonious and Tamini in the northern village of Imar in Lebanon. He is the second eldest of a family of four boys and four girls. He went to school in the village but was not able to continue his education so that he could help his father with the work in the village. He recalls that life back in those days was very different. It was very simple and everyone showed much love and respect for one-another. The whole village lived as one family. Fr. Antoun recalls living through the era of World War II. People were afraid that they would die of hunger because the memory of World War I was still implanted in their memories. During these times, the villagers would gather in the house of the village priest and would pray the Rosary. From a very young age, Antoun would dream of himself in the church flying with the angels and spending his days and nights with them. By the age of 18, he was seriously discerning a vocation to the holy priesthood or to the monastic life. However, his parents did not allow him to leave home and enter the seminary because he had to help his father and eldest brother with the land. Antoun was very upset and being the obedient son, he abided with his parents wishes. He was so upset, that he decided to travel to Brazil with a family friend and see if he could make a future for himself. He spent seven years working in Brazil however he could not forget his calling and was determined to come back to Lebanon and to convince his parents to allow him to enter the seminary. In 1963 on his way back to Lebanon from Brazil, Antoun stopped in Rome. The second Vatican Council was in session and he recalls being lucky enough to attend one of the sessions. He remembers that he pretended to be a helper of one of the priests so that they would let him into St. Peter s Basilica. When he entered the Basilica, his heart dropped! He thought that he was walking into a church full of saints and angels. No words could describe the joy that he was feeling at that moment. He was hoping for and dreaming about this moment all his life. Antoun remembers getting close to Pope Paul VI and kissing his gown. When he returned to Lebanon, he was 30 years old. When he went to see the Bishop, he tried to convince him to become a married priest but he refused. Antoun entered the seminary of St. Yaacoub at Karm Sadi. The priests and seminarians were all amazed by how quick he was able to learn theology and philosophy even though he was not very well educated. Antoun was ordained to the priesthood on 6 March He stayed in the Bishopric of Tripoli for four years and then came to Australia on 27 November 1980 with Bishop Joubeir (Fr. Paul s brother). He stayed at Our Lady of Lebanon Church for four years. In 1984, he went back to Lebanon to visit his parents. After his father died, Bishop Abdo Khalife asked him to come back to Australia to serve at Our Lady of Lebanon and he abided by his request. Fr. Antoun remembers that there was a big need for priests at the time and the people were yearning for the word of God. He recalls giving confession for 5 to 6 hours at a time due to the lack of priests. From this, he was convinced that his vocation was to serve in Australia even though he loved Lebanon very much and desperately missed it. Fr. Antoun says that God has always lead my vocation and my way and opened the doors for me and I believe that he has truly chosen me for a reason. Deacon Danny Nouh

5 The Servant s Word. Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Birth of Our Lord brings joy, hope, peace and love to all the world. I pray that our parish families have enjoyed their valuable time celebrating with loved ones during this very special season of new beginnings. On behalf of the Clergy, Deacons, Subdeacons, Committees, Staff, and Volunteers of Our Lady of Lebanon Co-Cathedral, I say THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the activities and highlights of our parish Christmas events over the past few weeks. A special note of gratitude is extended to all those who assisted in any way in organising this year s Christmas events - you have helped to bring joy into the hearts and homes of so many families, and especially to those families for whom this Christmas may not be so joyful. Sharing our love and hospitality, our time and our talents, with those less fortunate or grieving or lonely, is spreading the true message of Christmas the message of LOVE. For unto us is born a King, a mighty Saviour, Prince of peace and King of kings. He came to bring peace on earth, and asks us to do the same: Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. If we desire peace in the world, it must begin with peace in our own Country, flowing from the peace in our Villages, inspired by the peace extending from our Parishes, which in turn is empowered by the peace created in our families such peace can only come from within each of our souls, and this is where peace begins. There is no peace without Christ, the source of all peace within us, and it cannot exist without a personal and intimate relationship with our Loving God. In the 2017 Christmas Message of Pope Francis Urbi et Orbi ( to the city and the world ), the Holy Father focused on peace in the Middle East. Pope Francis urged that our hearts not be closed as the inns of Bethlehem were to Mary and Joseph before Jesus birth. The Pope lamented the pain and suffering caused to families and especially to children in times of war and unrest, redirecting our thoughts to what is most important - Let us free Christmas from the worldliness that has taken it hostage! The true spirit of Christmas is the beauty of being loved by God. This is the message of love that we need to spread in our own homes and in our very hearts if we seek peace in the world. A good prayer to recite daily may be Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me. Let us begin this New Year of 2018 with a heart that is focused on taking Jesus with us everywhere we go, and placing Him in the centre of everything we do. May God bless you and your families with a Happy New Year of good health and prosperity, filled with His peace and joy that the world cannot give. Father Tony Light from the Word A young Jesus A young Jesus decides to stay in Jerusalem because he was drawn to the temple and its activities. When we read this passage have we really stopped to reflect on how such a story is very different from our experiences today? Mary and Joseph don t seem worried that they hadn t seen their son for an entire day, assuming that he was in the group of travellers (v44). Imagine that scene today. If parents don t know where their child is for a minute they would panic and go mad. The fact Mary and Joseph were not frazzled by Jesus absence for a day was because life was much more communal and safe back then. People resided in villages which were tight knit. Everyone knew everybody else. Children played outdoors all day with each other, friends were always there, there were plenty of cousins and neighbours new everybody else s business. It was a communal spirit, where people visited one another, ate together, celebrated together and did not stand on ceremony. Life was simple and good. So Mary and Joseph trusted that Jesus was in good hands as they travelled a day s journey back home. Today the reality is very different. Many children grow up with much fewer siblings, little or no cousins, friends are only seen at school and most people have probably never been over to their neighbours. Adults are not so easily trusted especially alone with children. Unfortunately, there are too many stories of child abuse. Parents have become over protective of their children and all too often fill a child s life with possessions and empty their lives of relationships and important experiences. Today s Gospel encourages parents to allow children to grow, to pursue interests, to explore and to trust in God. Amen Sr Margaret Ghosn MSHF

9 بين الطفولة والرجولة يرسم لنا لوقا مشهدا وحيدا عن يسوع الفتي. يسوع إبن اإلثنتي عشرة سنة والتي هي بداية عمر اإللت ازم الديني عند اليهود. هذا المشهد هو صلة وصل بين أناجيل الطفولة وبين حياة يسوع األرضي ة التي ستنتهي بالموت والقيامة. فهو ما ازل بحماية يوسف ومريم ولكنه ايضا يتخط اهما ألنه يحقق إ اردة أبيه السماوي وكأنه أصبح ارشدا يعرف ما يفعل. هو يطيعهما ولكن ه يقول كلمات لم يفهماها.يسوع ككل شاب يهودي مؤمن يصعد مع أبويه ليتم ما شريعة عيد الفصح ولك نهم في طريق العودة يبحثان عنه ثالثة أيام ليجداه وكأن بها رمز لألي ام الثالثة في القبر. وها هم يوسف ومريم يعيشان ما يشبه الموت أيضا من الحرقة على إبنهما الضائع وال ذي ال يعرف عنه أحد شيئا. لكن مقابل البحث عنه يجداه بين العلماء في الهيكل ثالثة أيام في القبر يقابلها ثالثة أيام في الهيكل. دخل القبر ليحرر المقبورين ويعطيهم الخالص وها هو بين العلماء بدل أن يسألهم هم يسألونه وهو يجيبهم ويدهشهم إنه أيضا يعطيهم الحياة ال تي هي معرفة الكتب المقدسة. أم ا على سؤال مريم ويوسف يجيب بدهشة اخرى: "ل م اذ ا ت ط ل ب ان ن ي أ ال ت ع ل م ان أ ن ه ي ن ب غ ي أ ن أ ك ون في م ا ه و أل بي ". بالنسبة ليسوع كان من البديهي أن يعلما أين يجب أن يكون لك نه حدث يتخطاهم خاصة عندما يكل مهم عن أباه السماوي وال ذي يجب أن تتطابق مشيئته ومشيئة أبيه االرضي مع مشيئة أباه السماوي وليس العكس. يسوع يتم م إ اردة اآلب عبر إستغالل كل لحظة من لحظات حياته لينشر كلمته وان حضوره اإللهي والسري له مفعول آني وال يكتفي بما يفهمه فقط يوسف ومريم رغم إحت ارم الكامل لهما. لإلجابة عن هذا السؤال فلنبدأ بالقول إن اهلل ليس إلها شر ي ار! اهلل يؤد بنا تماما كأي أب أو أم أي أننا إن أخطأنا التصر ف سنتحم ل عواقب ال نرغب فيها. وهذا منطقي أليس كذلك إذا لم علينا أن نخاف من اهلل إال إن كان ذاك الخوف صح يا كخوف أوالدنا من ا أي خوفا تأديبيا وخوفا من التور ط بمشكلة خاص ة عندما يكون األوالد يدركون أن أهلهم يهتم ون ألمرهم فيبدأون يخشون أن يخي بوا أملهم. وهذا ما ي سم ى بالخوف الصح ي الذي بدوره يحمي! إن عواقب ارتكاب الخطيئة مريعة ألن الخطيئة تتسب ب برذائل عديدة منها اإلدمان على الكحول االغتصاب سفاح القربى القتل السرقة والطالق الذي يقضي على حياة عد ة أشخاص في الوقت عينه وهذا ما ن اره يحصل من حولنا. إن اهلل يحمينا من أنفسنا وهو يدر بنا ويؤد بنا كأي والد. يجب أال ننسى أن ه يحب نا كي ن بعد عن فكرنا أشباح األفكار األخرى التي ت ارودنا. فكل ما يفعله اهلل هو بدافع حب ه لي ولكل واحد من ا. هذه طبيعته! صحيح أن ه قد يصفعنا إن أخطأنا إال أن ه يبقى إلى جانبنا ألن ه مخلص وأمين. نعم علينا أن نخشى اهلل خشية صح ية مبر رة وليس علينا أن نخاف منه. أليس هو األلف والياء الذي ال ينسى أحدا ويحمي الجميع تأم ل في اإلنجيل ما هو عيد الدنح الد نح : كلمة سرياني ة تعني الظهور واالعتالن واإلش ارق عيد اعتماد الر ب يسوع في نهر األردن من يوحنا المعمدان وبدء ظهوره للعالم. ان المعموديه هي ميالد جديد لالنسان وبواسطه المعموديه يولد والدة جديدة.يسوع المسيح لم يكن محتاجا لمغفره الخطايا حيث هو الوحيد في العالم اجمع بال خطيه وهو الذي قال : "من منكم يبكتني على خطيه " وقال عنه بيالطس "لست أجد فيه عله واحدة ". فاعتمد يسوع المسيح في نهر االردن وهو غير محتاج الي المعموديه ولكنه اعتمد النه هو الذي اسس سر المعموديه بعتمده في نهر األردن بالرغم انه غير محتاج للعماد لمغفره الخطايا اال انه اعتمد علي يد يوحنا المعمدان.. لكي يؤسس هذا السر العظيم. والن المعموديه هي ميالد جديد ويأخذ االنسان من خالل المعموديه نعمه التبني لذلك في نهر االردن اثناء معموديه السيد المسيح اعلن اهلل االب عن الهوت االبن وانه في االبن ننال نعمه التبني. قال السيد المسيح " كما انك انت ايها االب في وانا فيك ليكون هم ايضا واحدا فينا ليؤمن العالم انك ارسلتني". اعتمد المسيح ايضا لكي يقدس الماء ويفتح ابواب السماء لقد قدس الماء بعماده ليعد لنا التقديس والتبني بالنعمه لقد طهر عنصر الماء باصطباغه في نهر االردن واعد لنا الروح القدس لتطهيرنا وتبريرنا باعتمادنا باسمه القدوس فالدنح إذن هو عيد ظهور سر يسوع الناصري للعالم بصفته المسيح ابن اهلل الحقيقي وظهور سر الثالوث األقدس اآلب واالبن والروح القدس في آن معا. هل علينا أن نخاف من اهلل مولد الم خل ص موت للموت اهلل على األرض اهلل بين البشر! لم يعد ذاك اإلله الذي يعطي شريعت ه وسط البروق على صوت البوق على الجبل الذي ي د خ ن وسط ظلمة عاصفة مريعة إن ما هو ذاك الذي يخاطب بلطف وطيبة في جسد بشري مع إخوته من ن سل ه. اهلل في طبيعتنا البشري ة! كيف حل النور في الجميع بأي طريقة تكو ن ت األلوهي ة في جسد بشري مثل النار في الحديد... من خالل اإلت صال. مع بقائها في المكان نفسه تمنح النار اضط ارمها للحديد. هذا ال يخف ف من اضط ارم النار لكن ها تمأل الحديد كلي ا من خالل اإلت صال به. بالطريقة نفسها لم يخرج اهلل الكلمة الذي "حل بيننا" من ذاته لم يخضع الكلمة الذي تجس د إلى أي تغيير ولم ت حر م السماء من ذاك الذي كان يسكن ها. أ دخ ل بالملء في هذا السر : لقد ات خذ اهلل جسد ا حت ى يقضي على الموت الذي يختبئ في هذا الجسد. كما يشفينا الدواء حين يمتص ه الجسد كما تتبد د الظلمة التي ت خي م على المنزل عند دخول النور إليه هكذا تالشى الموت الذي كان يسيطر علينا عند مجيء إلهنا. كما يذوب الجليد الذي يتجم ع خالل الليل تحت أشع ة الشمس هكذا ساد الموت حت ى مجيء المسيح. لكن حين أشر ق ت "شمس الب ر " )مال ٣ : ٠١( "ابت ل ع النصر الموت " فهو لم يستط ع أن يتحم ل وجود الحياة الحق ة. ف لن م ج د مع الرعاة ولن رق ص مع المالئكة ألن ه و ل د لنا اليوم م خل ص وهو المسيح الرب. ف لن حت ف ل بخالص العالم يوم والدة البشري ة
