8 Preface It is an immense privilege and a daunting responsibility to organize the 13 th international conference of the World Association for Vedic Studies. WAVES as we know it, aspires to host scholars in an open forum where the free and friendly exchange of knowledge is the absolute priority. In the 22 years since the first conference in Atlanta, this tradition has been upheld through the efforts of a few volunteers. For this conference, the charge given to the organizers was to incorporate the best practices of full peer review, while providing as open a forum as possible for the full range of enthusiastic participation. We have tried our best to meet this demand, and seek the reader s understanding for the shortcomings in this ambitious task. Abstracts were requested early. Each abstract was sent to at least 3 reviewers with a quantitative and qualitative evaluation form, and each author was asked to participate by reviewing at least 3 abstracts. Full papers were solicited based on accepted abstracts, with a simple template adapted from engineering conferences. Except for this Preface, all content in this document has been subjected to full peer review. This was required to bring out the Proceedings volume before the conference, instead of the 2-year process followed in past conferences. You are reading the product of these efforts. The papers are organized into 5 tracks, loosely modelled on the Vedas, the Puranas, and the overall theme of Vidya. The Rg track holds papers primarily dealing with philosophy. The Yajur-Sama track deals with Bhakti and the fine arts. Atharva deals with diverse topics across science, mathematics, astronomy, medicine and governance. History and contemporary debates on sociology, are in the Puranas track. In such a multidisciplinary conference, each paper cuts across tracks. As a result, this classification is somewhat arbitrary. This volume provides a glimpse of the wealth and diversity of contemporary thought and action driven by the Vedas and the rich basis for the future of Vedic learning.
