Pathy The Maanaadu was held in a grand manner at the Jayaram Mahal, Thanjavur. At Sri Navaneetha Krishna Swami Temple (belonging to our community), at 4-00pm the National flag was hoisted by Sri K.N. Lakshmanan, Ex-MLA, Salem and the Gayatri flag hoisted by Sri V.G. Gopalakrishnan President, KUSO, Bangalore. A procession of several thousands of participants started from the Temple. After winding through several streets of the area, carrying placards and shouting slogans regarding the demands of our community, it reached Jayaram Mahal, the venue of the Mahanaadu by 5-15 pm. The huge hall was over flowing and out side the hall also several people were seated for whom a large video screen had been set up. Initially a cultural program of music and dance was held. Then the Office bearers of the Madhya Sabha, the special invitees and speakers occupied the dais. The invocation song was followed by welcome speeches and felicitations. President of the Madhya Sabha, Sri Bajji B.J. Radhakrishnan made his address which was followed by speeches by Sri N.M. Ramalingam, past President Sri P.G.M. Thulasiram, past President, Sri Raya R. Govindarajan, Industrialist from Kumbakonam, Sri K.N. Lakshmanan, Ex-MLA and others. The following were felicitated Sri K.R. Sethuraman and Sri Thada Subramanian Winners of Bhasha Samman. Miss Umapriya, the student who secured 3rd rank in the Tamilnadu 10th grade examination. A number of resolutions proposed by the General Secretary, Sri M.S. Ramalingam were passed by voice vote. These included requests to Central and State Governments to take action for- Uplifting the economic condition of Handloom weavers who form the bulk of our community, To include our community in the list of Most backward classes, To give the aid and support to our community on the basis of its being a Linguistic Minority Community and many more demands. 2 2 Voice of KUSO The Chief Guest, Tamilnadu Minister for Commercial taxes, Hon'. S.N.M. Obaidulla made a special speech and promised all help and support to our community. The Minister also inaugurated the new Website for the Madhya Sabha, donated by the YUVA SOURASHTRA INITIATIVE of Bangalore. The function ended with National Anthem. There was dinner to all participants. The Mahanaadu, attended by representatives of our community from all cities and towns in the Thanjavur Zone who came in several buses, vans etc., was a huge success in providing an awakening to our community and drawing the attention of the Governments to our needs. Soundararajan, the world famous Tamil Movie play back singer, was honoured in a felicitation function (maaperum paaraattu vizhaa) arranged by the DMK Party s Supremo Anjanenjan, Atralarasar M.K. Alagiri on 6th August 2008 at Tamukkam Grounds, Madurai. Film Director Sri Rama Narayanan presided over the function.! Iyakkunar Sigaram Sri K. Balachandar, Kavignar Vali, Kavignar Vairamuthu, Mellisai Mannargal Sri M.S. Visvanathan and Sri Ramamurthy and Chinnak Kalaivaanar Vivek are some the film personalities who decorated the dias. Smt. P. Susila, play back singer who had joined with TMS in many of the duets was also present on the stage.! TMS was honoured many a times by many people at many places in the past. A few years back, a big procession was arranged in Chennai to honour him. TMS was taken in a horse drawn traditional chariot with flower head gear by the mellisai singers, I remember. But the one arranged by Sri M.K. Alagiri was monumental showing extravagance and pomp. Moreover, this felicitation took place at Madurai, the birth place of Sri T.M. Soundararajan.! Almost all main roads of Madurai town were decorated with arches, banners and festoons etc., as if they are welcoming their own party s leader.! Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, who unveiled the statue of late P.T.R. Palanivelrajan, ex-minister of Tamilnadu, in the early hours of the day, had joined and led the felicitation function to a grand success.! Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi had handed over to Sri T.M. Soundararajan a gift cheque for Rs. 5 lakhs honouring his great services for the cause of Tamil language through his vocal contribution in playback singing in tamil movies, acting major roles in a few Tamil films and rendering kacheries in AIR and elsewhere.! All the Tamil film personalities who had participated in this great function praised the valuable contributions made by TMS to the Tamil language, Tamil State and Tamil film world.! This felicitation function of TMS conducted in a grand manner in Madurai City will have an historic importance as far as the Sourashtra Community is concerned because of one of its son who rendered musical services for more than 60 years to the language of the state, was honoured by Sri M.
